  • Can you make a normal toy boat into a putt putt boat?

  • @CosplayCreators Yes, if it's not too heavy

    Slater

  • fantastic ...when i was five years old..i had one. now...i am 44 years old.

last year i built one pop pop boat after to see your videos in youtube!

I from ARGENTINA...you can see my video about pop pop boats ...congratulations and thanks excuse me for my pour english

  • @LINDANETA1 Yes, very good building. I also liked the oscillating steam engines.

    Slater

  • I get distracted easily. I should be doing english now.

  • my boat didn't work!

  • i made many of them ... diffrent models....i made onewith your instructions they were very helpfull (: ... i have a question where can i buy them other than online ???

  • pop pop pals lol

  • my straaw melted

  • very cool i plan to make a giant pop pop boat for me and my family it should be 15 feet when im done tell me what you think

  • @mason6182 I cannot link in these text comments, but there is a page about scaling up.

    Slater

  • AHAHAHA! UR BOAT IS GONNA CATCH ON FIRE!!!

    kool project though.

  • yes, so dont put a frog in your mouth or put a knife in the power point???? who are you my mother lol

  • Now ive been thinking about a engine now its a very easy engine to make but will it work. What you do is cut out that steel part out of the bottom of a can and cover the hole/dent in the steel with aluminum foil so it flexs concave and conflex and drill 2 holes into it to put copper tubing into the holes do you think that this would work if it does I will build it and post a video of it for you.

  • can we make the engine with nicrome wire?

  • @ijion956 For people who don't know what nichrome wire is, it's used for electrical resistance heating (think of the glowing orange wires in electric toasters). I think some French experimenters have already used electric heating elements to stabilize the heat as a constant when measuring engine efficiency. You can research more at Jean Yves' pages (including English pages) at eclecticspace dot net

  • is there anything that a can do to for an apox places ment? or somthing close to it

  • yes i can do this for my homework

  • Can you use celotape for the can/ putt putt noise maker of instead of the epoxy glue?

  • @teddy292929 Oh how I wish we could just use celotape to seal it. Or even some glue less messy than epoxy. Alas, epoxy works, nothing else seems to.

    Slater

  • @sciencetoymaker what about hot glue?

  • @boberto322 Hot glue can be used for some things but not the places that get very hot. It just melts and becomes soft again when heated.

    Slater

  • lol at 0:16

  • does it actually work with straws and metal please help

  • @sexyboy1more I'm not sure I understand your question, but the boats work if constructed right. Most people have people have to make a second boat before they get it right. More information about them at sciencetoymakerDOTorg.

    Slater

  • I purchased my first Pop Pop boat in the summer of 1964 (4th grade) and it cost either 10 or 15 cents in the novelties and jokes department of a stationary store. Is it possible to use this technology in a larger scale?

  • @finlayson101 I'm not able to put links here, but on the boat instructions page at sciencetoymakerDOTorg, just before the green letters about making a 3D hull from a milk carton, there is a link that addresses scaling up.

    Slater

  • it lags lol

  • umm can u sell some of those engines i keep messing up

  • @yoyohoes You can buy pop pop engines for a few dollars from the internet.

    Slater

  • @sciencetoymaker The boat it self costs 5USD in ebay

  • hey ! can the putt putt boats go in sea water ????

  • @MrTree1997 It's a great question. Has anybody tried it? The boiling point of salt water is a little different than fresh water, and I would definitely rinse out the engine when finished because saltwater will corrode aluminum.

    Slater

  • ur voice is very calming

  • Some information here is incorrect. It is NOT the flexing of the diaphragm that pumps the water in and out, actually the reverse happens. The repeated flash-boiling and condensing of the water ACTS ON the diaphragm. Some pop-pop boats don't even have a flexing diaphragm, they simply have a stiff chamber or even just a coil of copper pipe (with the coil they need a spirit burner). The only function of the diaphragm is to create the lovely sound.

  • @BoilerRoom4 Well, as I said,I will go into more detail about how the cycle works in a video just about that. And I did mention the momentum of the column of water acting on the diaphragm as well, but yes, it is not the metal deforming from the heat and thereby pumping out the water. I do think the diaphragm has some springiness which adds more than sound (you don't need the hotter spirit burner).

  • I am going to use joining parts instead of glue

    is that okay?

  • @Naturepheonix I am not sure what "joining parts" means. Let us know if you find a new way to things.

    Slater

  • @sciencetoymaker Like instead of using epoxy to hold the tube in the engine hull, Just make the engine tighter and use on the two ends, just cut excessive aluminum out so that it's be able to fold back and hole the straws.

    (Since I can't find epoxy)

  • @Naturepheonix Folding and crimping metal can create an airtight seal industrially, but making pressure-tight crimp seals with the pop pop engines is not possible, at least in my experience. Epoxy might not be called "epoxy." Look for any two-part glue that you have to mix equal parts. That will be epoxy, by whatever name.

    Slater

  • @sciencetoymaker Oh nono, wait, am I suppose to airtight it???

  • @Naturepheonix Yes, it must be completely airtight. Even a pinhole leak will keep it from working.

    Slater

  • @sciencetoymaker OH MANNNN!!!!!!

    Now I need epoxy.....

  • @Naturepheonix its not as hard as it seems, its realy simple

  • @galenator123 I hope so.

  • is it better with 3-5 straws or 2 iron tube than 2 normal straws?

  • @lamoene I don't know, but search "PuttPutt4video's" channel on YouTube. He is Daryl from Canada and he has made boats with more than 2 pipes, which are very fast.

    Slater

  • ive been making mine wider but they dont go as fast they put real slow, ive already gotten two out of three to work and im already gonna experiment with a tall boy beer can itle take about three candles. ill keep u posted on this project

  • Yes, I found that smaller engines to a point are more powerful. Now that you are experimenting, check out the archives of the international pop pop group. Lots of experimenting reported on there.

    Slater

  • i have a question, do the straws ever melt from th heat

  • No, the straws do not melt. In fact, when the engine works right, they don't even get hot.

    Slater

  • oh i get it one straw sucks in the water while the other side puts out the steam right?

  • It's a bit more complicated than that. Water is alternately expelled and then sucked in again through both straws in a repeating cycle. In one straw and out the other is just used to prime the engine with water.

    Slater

  • I want to make one that looks like one from Ponyo on a Cliff!!

  • can i have the normal design please? (in the begginning of the video)

  • what website did you get the standard pop pop engine plan from

    thanks

  • I just did it from having taken some traditional engines apart. There is a Yahoo pop pop group where people have been making that kind of engine (and experimenting with many other designs).

    Slater

  • It's just like the one from ponyo! I love it! :D

  • giant metal bucket +alot of straws=giant pop pop boat

  • That is so simple but yet it's so effective, Awesome.

  • So its like a function of our heart beat and a function of an engine but this is a simpler way to do it i know anyone can make one

  • how do you make the one at 1:05 it is awsome

  • Just uploaded Part 2- Canadian Putt Putt Boats. May not be listed yet. Check tomorrow. Daryl Canada.

  • That's a boat by master craftsman Daryl Foster. I can't put URL links in text comments, but do a YouTube search "part 2 canadian putt putt boats" and you'll be amazed at his work.

    Slater

  • youre also an awesome teacher and speaker

  • that shoe boat was AWESOME, i love shoes!

  • Hey there.. Just found out about these boats in another video here on youtube.

    That really inspired me.

And now I found ur great Videos here.

Great Work dude! Keep it up!

  • thanks for the video.

made one a couple of days ago.

    works great!!!

  • Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad it worked.

    Slater

  • I Love this°!°

  • i tried to make your desighn and i cut my self so badly my hand was red

  • whos fualt is that???

  • No one's but I am only 9 years old

  • they have the same great sound as the real ones that you buy off the internet. thats why im going to try and make one

  • is the boat at 1:04 fast? im tempted to build one!

  • they work good. one thing how do you make a deck for the carton please make a vid

  • Thanks for the feedback, Check the sciencetoymaker boat page. I will try to get it up soon.

  • thanks i built one it is so cool also my boat tips over it is the carton boat that will be nice to now how to make it not tip over thanks

  • Excellant Job on The Info. I am going to send this video to a few of my friends and see who can make a pop pop boat. Thanks for sharing.
