  • people are also eating because the food is drugged and it puts you into a trance and makes you eat more and eat more frequently...food a drug now

  • the sacred ness of food and prayer of thanks before eating also nearly vanished now a days!

  • Huh..... Nutrtion seems to have a lot in common with Psychology. We can't yet figure out what makes the brain works the way it does... it's just too complex. Looks like the carrot is the same way. ;]

Perhaps Nutritionalism is is the new Phrenology. That was all the rage in it's day as well, now we look back and say, "logical enough for the times since they weren't well educated, but man were they off."

  • I think he underestimates how far back in time this "Culture" he thinks has answers for a humanistic food, was interrupted. Because really most cultures besides maybe the ones that live in the jungles are not that healthy. And even those small groups, i think are lost from what was a greater civilization of humanity that was dispelled from their habitats and from their cycles, and took on terrain and technologies of preservation that were not healthy. But this stuff is easier to sell!!!!

  • Forget some millions upon millions of youtube views for Justin Beiber!...People need to watch THIS!

  • I'm gonna read his book.

  • FUNNY AND TRUE!

  • Instead of these documentaries, visit any mediterranean country. They've been doing it right from the beginning... And they don't put labels on things, like "health nut", "foody"... it's just part of the culture and always has been. All these food trends and such look really silly from the mediterrenean perspective.

  • Michael pollan champions the meditarranean diet - he champions all of the traditional cuisines that still retain their cultural wisdom.

He also cautions against labels - one of his rules is, if it has a health claim on it, it's probably not healthy.

  • That's true. I've seen lots of articles that say the mediterranean approach is very healthy.

  • For an ideal compromise between meat-eating and vegetarianism, find out about mammaltarianism, a diet that excludes most mammal-meat.

    Search "Mammaltarian" on YouTube.

    Go Mammals!

  • never have french fries, forget this every month crap

  • So make your fries with tallow like your ancestors did.

  • Julia Child said that same thing. It's better flavor and it doesn't break down or change at high frying temperatures.

  • CULTURE is so right!!!!!

  • Michael Pollen's book is brilliant - it made us go and have a look in our food cupboard and fridge - we thought we were healthy until we read that...how wrong we were. We have gone back to home cooking where and when ever we can - and it's cheaper too. Sharing some of my recipes on my channel. My grandmother used to make and grow most of her own food - I know I can't be as productive as that as I have to work too - she lived to a ripe old age!

  • This guy is a food genius!!

  • this logic is so sharp and naked you feel refreshed.

  • NEDM

  • Eat healthy, favor simple fresh produce - a simple message that shouldn't exactly be a revelation to anyone.

No harm in arguing that point, but very much harm in his anti-science rants. His target should be not science, but INDUSTRY - the food industry. What SCIENCE has done with food is not deserving of his scorn and derision. SCIENCE, with regard to food, ended hunger in many parts of the world, by revolutionizing agriculture. Look up the work of Norman Borlaug, for example, and be awed.

  • well nutritional science has lead us to believe that unhealthy food is actually healthy...so maybe it is a good thing he is arguing against that

  • Im America its about "quantity", compare lets say France, where socially, and culturaly French people eat more cheese, wine, and breads on a everyday basis, the key is quantity!! French people are thin compare to ameracan obesity culture. And Idont think it will change, fattest folks in the world besides germany

  • "Im America its about "quantity", compare lets say France, where socially, and culturaly French people eat more cheese, wine, and breads on a everyday basis, the key is quantity!!"

Quantity and exercise accounts for most of it, yes.

But it's not just quantity; you can be as thin as you like but 10 grams of sodium each day will still give you hypertension. Not eating enough fibre will still predispose you to colon cancer and make it difficult to go to the toilet. etc.

  • hmmm about sodium, be careful with your words here. All unrefined salt messes with the delicate mineral balance in your bloodstream, which is made up of the same mineral composition as seawater. We are a a big bag of salt water. To be properly hydrated, we require around 1/4 teaspoon of unrefined salt for every quart of water we drink (1 quart for 50 lbs of body weight, more for active people). The misunderstanding between real salt and refined is contributing to hypertension.

  • Stratzrus - you are the idiot, the sprouter of drivel.

Everything he says makes sense if you stop to listen to what he is saying.

For anyone interested in this, I recommend watching the documentary "King Corn" as well.

  • What is he selling? Food absent high fructose corn syrup you have to grow yourself? Certainly not his book - he summarizes it himself and tells you that you don't need to buy his book.

This subject warrants discussion. You overlook the fact he isn't "waxing philosophical" but pointing out how society has shifted its eating habits over the last 30 years.

It is a pity you don't see his insight.

  • Everybody knows high fructose corn syrup is bad for you, what's new about that? And do you really think that he doesn't want you to buy his book...Puleeez.

These self serving "gurus" who are getting rich off of the gullibility and emotional needs of the public need to be exposed for what they are; hustlers preying on anyone who will listen to them.

Just go to Whole Foods and buy something decent to eat...do you really need Pollan telling you what to do or are you another sucker he lives off?

  • Not everyone knows high fructose corn syrup is bad for you, and not everyone reads labels to see what's in the processed "food" from the stores. If people did that, we won't see all the store-carts staying on line at the check registers full with junk in them. So, YES, we need "gurus" like Michael and others, who took their time to learn, to educate people about what exactly is in all those boxes bought and paid as being food.

  • well put - I agree.

  • so what is it that you disagree about what he's talking about.

  • After reading 'The Omnivores Dilemma', I really want to experience a Polyface Farm like he did!

  • Maybe you can one day...intern at one and/or start your own! I visited one last week and it was awesome. I'll be posting that story in several weeks.

  • Culture includes cooking. It's a part of life mode of our ancestors, in each part of world. In France, it's easy to see that, for example, mountain food contains much cheese or meat.

I am not sure, historyless people are able to judging, if culture includes coking or not.

  • In fact all is about culture! So, in a global world we'll have a "global way to feed our selves"! In other words 'we'll loose the cultural fact, Orey!

  • culture? come on dude. we've been wrong about so much. cooked food does harm! a carrot is only a carrot when consumed raw. pleasure is only possible with optimum health !! eat raw and no supplements will be needed. check out david wolfe. nutrition is not a new science. nutrition is eating raw food ! i just can't help it.i grew up in a bisquit tragedy family and i had to abandon my tradition.

  • Good video ;-))It's always good thing to think about what you eat!

    Ciao

    5/5

  • Chad sits at the table for 2 min and scarfs everything down. I'm there for 30 minutes enjoying myself. I love eating : )

  • Great perspective. "Scientific eating" may appeal to scientists, but I guess moms do know best lol. My personal culture includes way to many hot dish casseroles and jello molds, but at least they do end up rotting.

  • i love this video! it is great. I would be receptive to ethical sponsors.

  • Interesting but, I don't agree. I like french fries. So if i want to eat them once a week, for crying out loud, I will. Here is how to eat...you see it, you want it, you eat it. Like everyone else, the moment I am born is the moment I start to die, so, I might as well enjoy this life of eating to the fullest. If I die sooner than you, at least I had a blast!

  • No body is stopping you or really gives a big hoot what or how much you eat,so eat as much or as little of whatever you want to. No body cares.

@video:Toward the end of the video where he is talking about eating food that rots, and how your grandmother would not recognize cereal bars or most items in a grocery store. Well a lot of what was said, sounded like common sense, or logic.

I'm always willing to keep an open mind, chance I may learn something new. Five star.

  • Very interesting! It is great to love food, we need it to survive.

I think you can eat anything in moderation. Except watermellon...you can eat as much of that as you want!

    Love you guys!
