Britain went to war with 13 of its own colonies 1775. The term USA did not exist until 1778 when you declared independence by which time we were already at war. So in a way we never went to war with the USA only with our own colonies. We just found ourselves in a war with a newly declared nation. It is just we liked America so much we did not want to part with it. Unfortunatley they wanted to part with us.
