That is a machine that you put freshly harvested brown rice in it and will come out all peeled as white rice. It is like washing machine for rice (skin peeler) Usually these machines are set in towns have rice paddies.
i thought it was an ice machine when i saw the hopper, there's a large ice machine near my house that has a similar hopper and it works by section whether you want a bag of ice or an ice chest and when you press which the ice falls down into one of two hoppers one small mouthed to put the ice in bags and another one with a large mouth for ice chests
maybe its cause Im american but I was leaning towards a popcorn maker machine. Like the yellow figure looked like a cob of corn or maybe sweet potatoe so I thought it was a air popper, lol. When I was in Japan I didnt visit much in the way of smaller country places. Except to visit an Onsen but I only went looking for the onsen.
@iateyourham i don't think its like reaaaaly how clean it it... i think it is always clean but, its like potatoes... if you cook it with its skin on its just a different kind of preparation xD the taste changes and the "feel" of the food is completely different, theres a thousand ways to prepare rice, especially in japan =D
@TheJapanChannelDcom On the Main sign, I could read the katakana that said 'Coin'. Is this related to an actually Dollar or yen coin? and do you know what the kanji means?
It doesn't use water you see, it just mixes the rice together, and this action causes the outside brown 'skin' (ie. the healthy stuff like in brown bread) to come off. It uses something like a sieve so that the 'skin' of the rice is dropped outside and the 'clean' rice comes out.
You can eat the brown rice though, in fact, some people eat it to be more healthy! Although it's quite rare.
hahaha way cool i thought it was something used to recycle plastic (chop&condense) but never thought of rice being the obvious. like grinding your own coffee
Have you ever featured vending machines selling books, nattou, bicycles, beetles, umbrellas, flowers? They really exist in Japan. BTW America has ipod vending machines.
@FrikitsukiNoDeoxys in my experience, brown rice has a nuttier taste than white rice and doesn't seem to stick as well to itself like the polished white.
@FrikitsukiNoDeoxys taste like rice, just wierd to eat because of the harder shell and makes you crap like mad (very very very x10000000000000000 high in fibers).
My fiance's family stopped by one of those once when I was visiting. Their family comes from a long line of rice farmers and their relatives still grow it, so they get a bag every now and then that they have to deshell. At first I thought it was just a drop off station where someone else would come to deshell their rice for them, but the machine actually did it for you right there! Pretty cool. :)
@gyqz Don´t feel bad...I thought it had something to do with laundry... Then he talked about the rice...yeah. But when I saw it would from one side to another and I was thinking if it was laundry it would do the same I though....close enough! xD
i started thumbing up videos before watching it as another user was doing the same thing, and have to say so far I havn't been let down on a single video :) thumbs up for a do it yourself attitude in japan :)
@FrikitsukiNoDeoxys it has a nutty slightly sweet taste. It is VERY chewy so you wont need to eat as much as you would white rice, but takes longer to cook.
This is probably one of the coolest things ever... also when I tried to hit the like button it said that "This feature was not available right now." CONSPIRACY!!!
I saw the kanji for rice somewhere on that machine so I knew it had to do something with that. Didn't know exactly what for though! Anyway, thanks for showing this interesting vending machine! :)
Ha! I figured it was some kind of 'husker' of some sort or something. yay- somewhat intelligent! I still dont get what that orange guy had to do with it, is he an unhusked rice kernal or something?
That's cool. Nowadays here in the EU the farmers aren't allowed to sell unprocessed food anymore. Simply because there could be a possibility that somewhere along the lines we might incidentally get sick.
So getting untreated milk from the farmer is a big no for example. A bit sad. :(
The more I watch your videos, the more I realize Japan is more the country for me then being stuck over here.
Now that's an intriguing premise. If there were machines like that in the West for wheat to flour, people in cities would actually have a vague idea that grocery items actually come from the fields and not from spawning in on store shelves.
have fun by eating 15kg of rice before the fat core gets rancid. you can keep it longer by losing some vitamins and minatals. thats the reason why rice gets peeled.
its not the question if its better. its the question of "how to preserve it" over the year. but i think you allready know this (i would wonder if you dont because you're asian)
@DreaMeRHoLic well i guess most japanese people will prefer brown rice because it's healthier. they eat a whole lot of rice yearly so why consider the length of preservation of rice?
I like how the places were the people push in the rice with their hands and were the rice slides down the paint is polished off. Very interesting how such gentle friction over time can do so much!
I don't read Japanese, so the pictures told me it was a vending machine for Soylent Green, I had no clue it was a rice polisher,,, learned something new today.
I'll be honest, I initially interpreted the pictures as something to have to do with grinding up insects....like....maybe it was some sort of bait-making machine or something.

the integral rice (dunno how you call it in english, but it's the rice that's not been processed) it's a lot healtier.
In particular while the rice cause the glicemy to rise quite a lot (surprisingly even more than the pasta) , the integral rice doesn't.
So if you don't care about the appearance try eating it brown :-)
