If it weren't for the fact that it's overpriced, ... I might actually buy one...
But I can build a machine w/6 1.5TB drives (RAID-5), a Core2Duo, 4GB RAM, and XP-MCE or Vista for less than the sale price of on of these NAS boxes.. ($2,000)
And then; of course, I can use it for more than just storage and it would still have more "useable" storage space than this...... :-P
- the ReadyNAS has both online horizontal and vertical expansion, meaning that the volume size will automatically increase when you add more drives or replace existing drives with larger drives
- the ReadyNAS product line has an open SDK for end-user dev
- currently there are addons for various P2P clients, SSH access, online photo gallery, Drupal/Wordpress, etc.
MB w/RAID-5/snd/lan $125, 4GB DDR2 $90, Case/PS $130, Core2Duo 3Ghz $175, VGA w/HDMI&COMP $100, 6 1.5TB Seagate $840, DVD-R $30 TOTAL $1490. $1600 if I want to add a RAID-1 250GB for OS and Page File.
My thought is just that I would then not only be able to use it as a storage box w/web access features, but also perhaps use it as a Media Center PC (HTPC.) while still serving as storage... (Might have to add $100 or so for a video capture card, etc... but you get the point.)
LOL! I feel the same way about mine!

A few things to keep in mind:
- actual street prices are lower ~1650
- there is a diskless Pioneer edition TBA ~1200
- the ReadyNAS has both online horizontal and vertical expansion, meaning that the volume size will automatically increase when you add more drives or replace existing drives with larger drives
- the ReadyNAS product line has an open SDK for end-user dev
- currently there are addons for various P2P clients, SSH access, online photo gallery, Drupal/Wordpress, etc.
- 5 yr warranty

No argument from me. If you've got the skills to build your own and are tech-minded, then building your own is great for learning and fun.
On the other hand, if you just want to drop something on your network that's easy-to-use, then something like the ReadyNAS can be a good fit.
