Feel sorry for the lady, but it sure looks like a win in russian roulette. Not impressed by the stunt, even if it had worked out. Sorry again, but this is a really silly thing to do and does NOT prove your flying, nor your judgement skills. (obviously) Not so sure I would give my airliner to the command of this type of person.
Same exact thing happened to a pilot named Lindsey Hess. Yes, he survived doing the same stunt, flying his biplane inverted, cutting a ribbon just a few feet from the ground..
Ya gotta wonder though....while she's flying a commercial jet......her mind wanders a bit and suddenly she's reviewing an aerobatic routine in her mind.....Then...Wait! Oh my god! Back to reality. This isn't a biplane. ((But I wonder if this big pig can fly inverted.)) "Hold on people....We're about to hit some turbulence"....Weeeeeee!!!
DUMB BROAD PUSHED HER "SKILLZ" TOO FAR- LIVED BECAUSE OF A ROLL CAGE AND NO FUEL LOAD. BAD JUDGMENT KILLS PEOPLE! THE AIR DOES NOT FORGIVE, EVEN ONCE!
I've met Joanne Osterud and seen her fly---she's superb. Anyone who pushes an aircraft to its limits consistently will face emergencies and (possibly) an accident on rare occasion. Her being a woman is immaterial, completely and utterly.
I am mystified as to who anybody would think this Pilot would lose her airline job because of this incident. Are they worried she might also screw up while cutting a ribbon flying upside down at an airshow with her airliner?
I suppose my Taxi driver buddy should be fired for for crashing his race car at the weekend....
Inverted night time aerobatics at ground level is common place,i wonder why she screwed this simple manuover up.Question? Has anyone tried to do this moronic stunt since? I dought it.Some of the best in the business would'nt try to pull this stunt off.
@rossmetacraft most airline management is lame. She now has an accident as a result of pilot error on her record now and was probably violated for careless and reckless operation.
rather big deal and kinda hard to fly a 767 with a suspended cert.
@beergut111 Aerobatics do not qualify as "careless and reckless operation" and she would not be "violated" nor would her 767 type rating be revoked. That's like saying NASCAR drivers would lose their regular driver's license for crashing during a race ...
@rossmetacraft you dont understand how it works. You dont need a drivers license to drive in nascar. but you need a pilot certificate to fly in an airshow.
although it's not illegal to crash a plane they can, and have violated people for careless operation. Just ask Bob Hoover. He had his medical suspended and he didnt even crash.
@beergut111 You're right, they can violate a pilot for careless operation. That's not what happened here. This was a mistake during a stunt. Very big difference. And I do have a clue. I'm a certificated pilot and I know at least one pilot who has severely damaged an aircraft due to a mistake. Did they pull his cert? Nope. They just had him undergo a flight surgeon's evaluation and no further action was taken. Now are you just speculating or do you have proof that she was fired or lost her cert?
@beergut111 Now you're back to talking about her getting fired. There's a huge difference between getting fired from an airline and losing your pilot cert or type ratings. United could fire her for this (especially if she's one of the higher-paid pilots ... airlines are looking for every chance to save a buck) but they can't take her cert. Only the FAA can do that, and they wouldn't do that in this case. The worst I could see them doing is requiring a medical eval or some sort of check flight.
@rossmetacraft first you cant lose a type rating. second, you cant fly for an airline with a suspended certifiacte. so the airline probably wont wanna pay your for nothing. I was FAA inspector for 17 years and a crash at airshow cause by the result of pilot error is a serious safety issue and grounds for suspension. Bob hoover had his suspended and he didnt even have an accident. When i flew for Northwest the last thing i would ever do is exrta flying. No reason for extra risk on my cert.
@beergut111 Like I said, twice now, I agree that the airline could fire her ... I never stated otherwise. They don't even need a reason. Where I disagree is with you saying that this incident was "careless and reckless operation" and that the FAA would pull her ticket for it, because I've seen mistakes like this made without the pilot losing his/her cert. At the end of the day, every case is different, and all we can do is speculate.
@rossmetacraft well you're allowed to disagree. Ive spent years as an faa ops inspector, this is careless and reckless operation of an aircraft. Just like taking off with ice on the wings. If you fly at 10ft without the intent to land....and you crash. that is careless and reckless.
Being an airshow with waivers in place, accidents can happen. If i was flying a 767 for united i wouldnt put my job in jeopardy flying around like this. That makes the case of careless even more so.
@beergut111 Okay, the fact that you're comparing deliberate stunt flying with taking off with contaminated wings says a lot. I'll bow out of this discussion now ...
@beergut111 "Being an airshow with waivers in place, accidents can happen. If i was flying a 767 for united i wouldnt put my job in jeopardy flying around like this. That makes the case of careless even more so."
No, that makes the case that you're a dull drudge that believes job "safety" is life's ulitmate goal. This lady was pushing the envelope, doing something a little extra, that the "Mr. Rigid" types can't contemplate. Some people DO things. It's her life to live, not yours.
@beergut111 If anyone was going to investigate to find someone at fault then looking in the pilot seat would be the last option. I'd start with the people who said it had to be done at night because the mayor will be having dinner with guests and he'd really love to impress them.
@shess0501 First off, You can't fly at all. Secondly, you couldn't even afford to buy a private pilots license. Thirdly, you're a disgrace to all human beings alike.
So many experts ! Let's try this. Tonight hop in your car, find the most narrow, unforgiving stretch of road you can, turn off your headlights and drive it at 80mph. Now imagine doing it upside down. Ground level stunts should be banned at night for this exact reason. "Sight pictures" go away at night. Aircraft don't have sufficient forward lighting for this. When you can't see the ground between yourself and the "target" it becomes VERY difficult to judge your height above the ground.
@shess0501 Let me guess: You...watch Chuck Norris movies, eat only meat and potatoes, have never left your state since birth, your friends call you Archie Bunker,
and you drink Budwieser or Shlitz, but most significantly, is your memebership with the KKK.
@skipplet It's a fact of simple biology. The inner ear (where the equilibrium is) of the female human is designed differently than the male, they have better spacial orientation and are far less likely to become disorientred during aerobatics. This is a fact, no my opinion.

I've often thought that Joann Osterud sucked as an airshow pilot. Now this is conformation to me. NEVER EVER FLY AEROBATICS IN THE DARK!!!!! What a waste of a perfectly good Ultimate Bipe!!!! What a dumbass!!!

Morrica maybe her wig slipped in flight and thats why she crashed , im sure she is a great pilot but lets hope she never gets confused in that airliner and tries stunts !!!!
