hi wilson dear, that was really fanstatic,so easy to paint water drops, i love it, i never thought of painting such water drops ,but now onwards i will include them in my paintings thanks again for sharing such a beautiful thaught.
Thank you! Much appreciated! Please check out my "Paint-Along" Lessons at jerrysartarama dot com They feature several complete paintings from start to finish.
I cannot thank you enough for this dew drop lesson, I was trying to emulate a tear drop in a portrait painting I was doing but could not grasp my mind around how to paint it transparent convincingly. I feel so stupid now! This simple technique should work beautifully.
Thank you for doing this! I have always been a very strict Photoshop user, but this has made me realise that nothing can beat a good paintbrush and canvas.
I'm just getting started back in oil painting since I lost my job and mobility with having MS. These videos are wonderful and it's bringing back some memories of how to paint again. Thanks so much for taking the time to make these.
I love this ! simple and clear ! Finally ! What is your medium recipe ? I don't like linseed oil , turpentine or damar varnish !!! Can I just use oderless thinner to thin out my paint ?
Yes, I use 100% Odorless Mineral Spirits for thinning and cleaning. But, if I need a medium with a little more substance ( for glazing, especially ) I use Winsor/Newton's LIQUIN, which is alkyd-based, but compatible with oils.
I'm not much of a painter, but i do love to draw. Your videos, even if they don't necessarily apply to my particular art style, still are truly inspiring. Its the simplicity. I tend to overwork things like this. Thank you Mr. Bickford!
I find that pretty much EVERYONE tends to "overworK' their paintings. So, in my lessons, I try to cut to the chase and be very direct to the point at hand without getting into all the confusing details which don't matter anyway. Usually, LESS is MORE!
It's not my Art style but I love your videos and the way you work. What is your medium recipe ??? I don't like linseed oil , turpentine and damar varnish !!! Can I just use odorless thinner to thin out my paint ?
Many thanks for your videos they have helped me very much and make me see with new eyes and a much easier way to paint have never taken any classes just learn by my self
Thank you Mr. Brickford for your wonderful teaching techniques. I have not picked up a paint brush in over 26 years & just recently started back up. I realized that if you don't use it you lose it. Even though I remember some things, I was glad to look through your many helpful & different videos to refresh my memory & start recalling the different techniques I use to know. You are my favorite artist.
Mr.Wilson i really appreciate ur work its so help full ,, one thnig i didnt understand is ,, the oil u r using ,, its for what i dont know what is it and what its called ,, can u plz writedown its name and its purpose,, and ths oil type thnig is use only for oil painting or we can use it with water color or any other colors
Yes, it's pretty simple, isn't it? Painting is an optical illusion we create using light and shadow to suggest 3-dimensional depth on a flat 2-dimensional surface. If you get your lights and shadows in the correct spots, using the correct values, it'll work every time. This pertains to ANY subject, not just dew drops.
You'd have to either"lift" the background color with a damp brush ( hoping you can lift it cleanly enough ) or use an opaque watercolor such as Chinese White or White Gouache to paint them on, just as I did. Another option would be to very carefully block out the shapes with masking fluid. Using the white paint would be the easiest route, by far.
Hi, I'm new at painting. I was wondering if oil paint is not only for landscapes or about nature I tried to paint a face and failed.
I started my art life by sketching since 6, then I grew up to 13 now and tried to master sketching bodies, scenes and landscape too. All I needed now is to paint it on a canvas.
By the way, I was so intrigued by the rose I saw at the 2:09-2:12 I would like to know how to do flowers so I can paint one for my mom. This helps a lot, thank you.
Actually, oils are the easiest for portraits because they dry so slowly. That allows a lot of blending time which is required for rendering the subtle nuances of the face.
And I learned to do flowers with a lot of practice. My first attempts were terrible, but we learn by doing. Keep practicing because that's the only path to improvement. Unfortunately, there's no real shortcut. Try to find some good dvd's and books on floral painting.
Thanks this valuable information. The technique looks simple but the results are great. As you say, we must get the correct shapes. hope to try this also.
I forgot to mention I watched your video on making waves, and this one on dew drops is great, and it was so simple to do, all your video's make painting so much easier.
Hi Allison! Long time, no hear! Linseed oil has a long history in art and is still in popular use today. I don't use it myself, because it's slow drying. I especially prefer LIQUIN ( Winsor/Newton) which is alkyd-based and dries much, much faster.
I'm not sure what you mean by "not clear", so I'll touch all the bases. In all my videos, I'm using Oils. For some of them, I used Alexander Magic White or Alexander Magic Clear ( which IS a clear medium ) These are available at alexanderart d o t com
Sometimes, I also use LIQUIN ( made by Winsor/Newton ) which substitutes for Magic Clear. It doesn't "look" clear on the palette, but it DOES dry clear.
I am an experienced oil painter but always find another way to approach a problem,,you were very helpful and thoroughly enjoyed your demos..I need to find a good way to do metals..
Painting metals ( copper, brass, silver, etc. ) isn't nearly as difficult as it seems. I STRONGLY recommend the book, "COLOR MIXING - The Van Wyk Way", ( A Manual for Oil Painters ) by Helen Van Wyk. Chapter 22 deals specifically with this topic. FIND AND PURCHASE THIS BOOK!! It will be well worth it! I have my own copy, but I'm keeping it!! lol

Each type of paint ( oil, acrylic, or watercolor ) has it's own "clear" medium to aid in application and blending.
For oils, I like to use a brand called "LIQUIN", which is made by Winsor/Newton. But there are dozens of similar products on the market.

No, LIQUIN is only compatible with Oils. There are many brands of Acrylic "blending" and "glazing" mediums available, which will do the job.

The key is in letting as much of the background color show through as possible. That's what makes it transparent.
