  • Wilson,

I cannot thank you enough for this dew drop lesson, I was trying to emulate a tear drop in a portrait painting I was doing but could not grasp my mind around how to paint it transparent convincingly. I feel so stupid now! This simple technique should work beautifully.

  • never thought making waterdrops could be that easy. Thanks!

  • @tosu99 It's very easy when you know how.

  • I love this ! simple and clear ! Finally ! What is your medium recipe ? I don't like linseed oil , turpentine or damar varnish !!! Can I just use oderless thinner to thin out my paint ?

  • @fairytalebeliver

Yes, I use 100% Odorless Mineral Spirits for thinning and cleaning. But, if I need a medium with a little more substance ( for glazing, especially ) I use Winsor/Newton's LIQUIN, which is alkyd-based, but compatible with oils.

  • DANKE DIR,... DU BIST EINE SEHR SCHONE LEHERIN!,...

  • Thank you for making this video, I was so intimidated by water drops, no longer.

  • @AhaliaVideos

They're very easy, once you know how!

  • Awesome simplicity! You make it so simple when you break it down like that. Thank you.....

  • WOW! Thank you SO much this is VERY helpful!

  • awesome!!!!

  • i like how you explain everything and not assume we know! thanks!

  • That's the whole basis of being a teacher, whether it's art or math! Thanks for watching!

  • I'm not much of a painter, but i do love to draw. Your videos, even if they don't necessarily apply to my particular art style, still are truly inspiring. Its the simplicity. I tend to overwork things like this. Thank you Mr. Bickford!

  • I find that pretty much EVERYONE tends to "overworK' their paintings. So, in my lessons, I try to cut to the chase and be very direct to the point at hand without getting into all the confusing details which don't matter anyway. Usually, LESS is MORE!

  • It's not my Art style but I love your videos and the way you work. What is your medium recipe ??? I don't like linseed oil , turpentine and damar varnish !!! Can I just use odorless thinner to thin out my paint ?

  • Well, thank you!

  • Thank you Mr. Brickford for your wonderful teaching techniques. I have not picked up a paint brush in over 26 years & just recently started back up. I realized that if you don't use it you lose it. Even though I remember some things, I was glad to look through your many helpful & different videos to refresh my memory & start recalling the different techniques I use to know. You are my favorite artist.

    With great appreciation -

    Laveda Ringo

  • Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching my lessons!

  • Mr.Wilson i really appreciate ur work its so help full ,, one thnig i didnt understand is ,, the oil u r using ,, its for what i dont know what is it and what its called ,, can u plz writedown its name and its purpose,, and ths oil type thnig is use only for oil painting or we can use it with water color or any other colors

  • Each type of paint ( oil, acrylic, or watercolor ) has it's own "clear" medium to aid in application and blending.

For oils, I like to use a brand called "LIQUIN", which is made by Winsor/Newton. But there are dozens of similar products on the market.

  • You're an amazing artist!

  • Thank you!

  • I'm painting a mural in my room and I am studying your technique. I'm so excited!

  • Good luck with it!

  • Great tips!

  • eindelijk ,,nu weet ik hoe ik een druppel kan maken

    Mvg Atty

  • Oh THANK YOU AAGAIN!

  • its incredible that adding that shade makes it looks so real!

  • Yes, it's pretty simple, isn't it? Painting is an optical illusion we create using light and shadow to suggest 3-dimensional depth on a flat 2-dimensional surface. If you get your lights and shadows in the correct spots, using the correct values, it'll work every time. This pertains to ANY subject, not just dew drops.

  • btw, just want to say thanks for this. you are inspiring me with painting.

  • I'm glad to hear it!

  • Can I use the liquin with acrylic paint? I'm painting a rose in acrylics soon, and I wanted to add dew drops to it.

  • No, LIQUIN is only compatible with Oils. There are many brands of Acrylic "blending" and "glazing" mediums available, which will do the job.

  • great technique, but how do i replicate this with water color?

  • You'd have to either"lift" the background color with a damp brush ( hoping you can lift it cleanly enough ) or use an opaque watercolor such as Chinese White or White Gouache to paint them on, just as I did. Another option would be to very carefully block out the shapes with masking fluid. Using the white paint would be the easiest route, by far.

  • Hi, I'm new at painting. I was wondering if oil paint is not only for landscapes or about nature I tried to paint a face and failed.

I started my art life by sketching since 6, then I grew up to 13 now and tried to master sketching bodies, scenes and landscape too. All I needed now is to paint it on a canvas.

By the way, I was so intrigued by the rose I saw at the 2:09-2:12 I would like to know how to do flowers so I can paint one for my mom. This helps a lot, thank you.

  • Hi,

Actually, oils are the easiest for portraits because they dry so slowly. That allows a lot of blending time which is required for rendering the subtle nuances of the face.

And I learned to do flowers with a lot of practice. My first attempts were terrible, but we learn by doing. Keep practicing because that's the only path to improvement. Unfortunately, there's no real shortcut. Try to find some good dvd's and books on floral painting.

  • Thank you, I'll try my best at flowers now.

It looked so easy... Well, it will be once I master it. Thanks!

  • Thanks this valuable information. The technique looks simple but the results are great. As you say, we must get the correct shapes. hope to try this also.

  • The key is in letting as much of the background color show through as possible. That's what makes it transparent.

  • hi again wilson, just watched the dew drop video, again now it all makes sense!!!!!

  • I want to learn how to paint this flower.

  • wow, that's great! thanks, i will try this week

  • It's actually quite simple if you pay close attention to the details I described. Give it a whirl!

  • I forgot to mention I watched your video on making waves, and this one on dew drops is great, and it was so simple to do, all your video's make painting so much easier.

    Thank you again

  • Thanks for watching. In case you're interested, I have a new Dvd available on my website.

  • What do you think of using linseed oil to thin the paints.

Thank you for your wonderful video's, I love watching them, I learn alot.

  • Hi Allison! Long time, no hear! Linseed oil has a long history in art and is still in popular use today. I don't use it myself, because it's slow drying. I especially prefer LIQUIN ( Winsor/Newton) which is alkyd-based and dries much, much faster.

  • Great video!!!!!!!!!!! 5*

  • thxs heaps for yr videos. great help.

  • You're welcome!

  • your videos are very useful for starters like me:)thanks a lot for tat but the medium which u r using is not clear.

  • I'm not sure what you mean by "not clear", so I'll touch all the bases. In all my videos, I'm using Oils. For some of them, I used Alexander Magic White or Alexander Magic Clear ( which IS a clear medium ) These are available at alexanderart d o t com

Sometimes, I also use LIQUIN ( made by Winsor/Newton ) which substitutes for Magic Clear. It doesn't "look" clear on the palette, but it DOES dry clear.

  • thanks sir.ur dew drops were tooo good. i hav been wondering how to do these. now it has become easy!!!

  • Yes, they are remarkably simple and easy to do, once you know how. Have fun with it!

  • thank you soooo much for these sir! This one + the clouds is exactly i needed! With ur help I'm gonna make some serious money:D

  • Well, I hope you do! Good luck. I'm happy I could be of help. Don't forget to check out my website and blog.

  • I am an experienced oil painter but always find another way to approach a problem,,you were very helpful and thoroughly enjoyed your demos..I need to find a good way to do metals..

  • Painting metals ( copper, brass, silver, etc. ) isn't nearly as difficult as it seems. I STRONGLY recommend the book, "COLOR MIXING - The Van Wyk Way", ( A Manual for Oil Painters ) by Helen Van Wyk. Chapter 22 deals specifically with this topic. FIND AND PURCHASE THIS BOOK!! It will be well worth it! I have my own copy, but I'm keeping it!! lol

  • Thank you very much for all your videos!

  • You're very welcome. Please remember to check out my website and blog, too!

  • i like the the techniques.. pls help me with flowers and human faces and skin tone variation

    thanks

  • Maybe I can do that in some future lessons.

  • Where do you conduct classes? I want to learn from you.

  • New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania this year. Also, Oregon and Florida in years past. I recommend checking the ART CLASSES and WORKSHOPS pages of my website.

  • very cool

  • Thanks. Also check my new lessons at jerrysartarama d o t com

  • you are an amazing artist! iv'e learned so much from you thankyou for all your video's :)

  • Thank you!

You'll find many more of my FREE video lessons at jerrysartarama d o t com

  • When will you get more videos??

  • The complete lessons I filmed for Jerry's Artarama will be available within a couple of months. ( at least that's what they've told me ) Check my blog for more info.

  • Wow! I've been wanting to know how to do these things for years. Can't thank you enough sir! I can't afford classes so you are an angel:)

    BOP

  • You're welcome. Enjoy!

I now have many more lessons such as this available on jerrysartarama d o t com

    Check them out!

  • very beautiful :) you explain everything so well!

  • I try to put everything in very "understandable" terms. I've been teaching art for nearly 20 years now, so I'm aware of the specific points people need to know. It's just a matter of describing what I do.

  • I like this.. I must show my dad your videos. He loves to paint landscapes and flowers

  • I hope he enjoys them and finds them helpful.
