I think it's a nice touch that he sort of hisses the 'sinnerman' part at around 1:50. It's possible that I'm REALLY overthinking this but, knowing David Eugene Edwards, perhaps it's a reference to the Garden of Eden serpent.
I won their cd on a college station in seattle way back in '95. Had no idea who they were. Here I am 15 years later still listening to that cd (mp3). One of the great underappreciated bands.
Oh man...dont you love it when you love a certain band...and people go like....what? who?......And you just know that this band will blow their mind....but they just do not want to take the time to get to know this awesome band......So you are left with the sweet feeling that you are one of the few , that listen and feel this band called sixteen horsepower....every song is an adventure...
These guys are the Best Ive ever heard in my book. I wished I'd had discovered them earlier. They got me playing my guitar and harmoica again. They should play @ the Iron Horse amherst Ma. They would be welcomed with open arms !!
Totally agree. Nothing else is like them and few musicians can match the power and beauty they possess.
One of my great memories is sitting on a rock out in the ocean watching sun set over the ocean in Thailand with this song on my headphones. Almost made me religious again :)
Of course Nina rules, but 16 HP has a different aproach to the song. No-one rules this song, it's going it's own way with different talented artists...
Great songs tends to do that (see "I Put a Spell On You..)
this is a really old folk song. it wasnt just a cover of nina simone.its not like she came up with the song. lol it is really just them playing their version of an old traditional song...
This is awesome. A truly excellent cover of a wonderful song. Altough a couple of times, to my American ears, he seems to be singing "cinnamon":P Thanks a lot for posting this. I'm going right now to look into acquiring a couple of their albums.
Might even be the seekers that were the originals, but im pretty sure it was Nina Simone. Definitely it was Nina that made it as popular as it became.

absolutly brilliant, I think nina Simone's version is more frantic and gives the feeling of his constant running, this version shows how pointless his running is...if that makes sense
I think you're right about Simone's version having this driving, running feeling. However I think it actually adds to song. It shows that even though it is pointless to keep running, he still just runs as a last ditch effort for hope or salvation, making it even more "tragic". But that's just my opinion.
Sure it is, just simply called 16 Horsepower Live. Almost 2 hours of their best songs live. Don't hesitate. Just buy it. It's my favourite live DVD...
yes.sinister?do you think this is sinister satan?ha ha ha ha!im so glad this divine music from God scares the evil in you with love and truth.black metal are for pussys and cowards.this music is unbelieveable.and are to be cherised by people with open hearts and good minds.unlike you sad, sad, sad, satanist mf`s.
Hmm i wonder, what is the one thing that will make you believe in god? fear for death and what will happen to you afterwards. It is for people that needs something "more powerfull" than themselves to hold on to in order to feel safe. And to me, that is weak.
I wouldn't say that a genre that focus on the individuality instead of collective thinking is cowardly. Doesn't it take more brains and strength to build up your own world views and morals instead of following rules and thoughts that are already made up for you?
you can call it God, you can call it Unconditional Love, you can call it The Absolute, you can call it The Cosmic Law, you can call it Everything, you can call it Nothing. it doesn't need to be needed; it simply IS.
in reality, there is no Evil that needs to be scared. Evil is only the outer reflection of our not-ready human features and those manifestations of our ego that oppose the Cosmic Law of Love. if we light up our conscience with awareness, empathy and unconditional love towards all living beings, our Ego (the source of all "Evil") will immediately disappear.
No actually i'm more of a Black Metal fan. But off course i listen to other things as well. Mostly DHG, Shining, Keep Of Kalessin, <code>, Mayhem, and alot of classical. And when i said sinister i wasn't thinking of this song in particular, but 16hp in general. The music has an "evil" touch to it, and what could possibly be more evil than christianity? it is grown up music. this was the first band to truly impress me in years when i first saw them. what a shame they broke up. very great band, but 'dark' or 'sinister' i think are completely inappropriate words to describe them. absolutely brilliant. give them another try when you grow up. call me, i'll burn their catalog for you. you still won't get it anyway.

there's music is "dark"...
but in a good way...with a touch of god in it
i think their music is the best ive heard
their songs actually "MEAN" something unlike the music of today
like all this emo screamo hardcore crap in which there songs have no fucking meaning
the point of songwriting is for it to have a moral
bands of today....just ruined that
except for some...
