@wesgriff1 Toonami didn't do more of these because once you have Alex Ross, you can't go back. Everything else is just...Alex Ross is the Jesus of comic book artists.
@JayDee284 Yes, yes he is. God, it gets me so mad when he tries to to say that Deadpool is HIS and that Joe Kelley did nothing? Liefeild is the reason why I don't fully endorse creator-owned content. The thought of him having full control over characters like Cable and Deadpool makes me sick.
I have to with Superman too, My favorite version(other then the original of course) would have to be his Kingdom Come Superman! That shield is just plain cool!
His realism is stunning, but I always hated how that same realism made his characters look stiff. I'm more of a fan of Jim lee & Ed Benes than Alex Ross, I think those styles although detailed are still best suited for comics bcuz they are more cartoony. But my most favorite now is Leinil Francis Yu. His style is very detailed but with great form with coloring I feel fits comics very well.
Alex Ross does amazing work, but if I have to gripe about something it would be that his figures don't look like superheroes so much as they look like people in superhero costumes.
Strange comment, but i completely understand what you mean by that. His style is almost too realistic to work effectively in comics, i suppose i'm used to expecting more of an exaggerated figure in comics rather than what he creates. Phenominal talent and artwork nonetheless.
But sometimes that kind of thing backfires. Look at that one popular group shot he has of the JL. Flash looks puffy and Batman's face is fatter than John Goodman's.
Again, they don't look like Superheroes, but rather guys in superhero costumes.
Christopher Reeve looked more like a superhero in costume than Alex's Superman model does. Same with Michael Keaton and Even goddamn George Clooney made a better Batman than Alex's model.
Also, i dunno, but I think sometimes using models like that make for less dynamic frames. it might just be me, but they always seem more static than, say, Jim Lee's work
I am going on 45. Alex Ross is quite simply, the greatest comic book artist of my lifetime. He makes characters photo real, and realistic looking. Instead of absurdly exaggerated muscles, he paints realistic proportions. The lighting techniques he uses make a world of difference over simple heavy shading.
Some guys - even people like the late, great John Buscema and Frank Frazetta (though neither named Ross they mentioned the current trend at Ross' height and I regard them as genius' btw), have had in-direct jibes at Alex Ross' excessive photo-referencing... Personally I think if it's so easy why is there an Alex Ross? Everybody could do it!? This guy is different, yes he uses (gasp!) photo's, but he's a true fan of Comic Books and he has a MASSIVE ability to do what others shirk as "easy".
Di you see his vampire picture of Bush biting the statue of liberty on the neck and the obama painting where he is ripping off his shirt like hes some kind of fucking hero?
Does ross even FOLLOW what is REALLY going on?
Has he even heard of HR 2454 the cap and trade aka ENERGY TAX bill? Or does he have so much money he could fucking care less?
A really ridiculous one was Bush making out with Cheney...only a fucking loser would take their time to put together something like that! I'm so amazed this asshole would bash on reps more than Bin Ladan, Kim Jong-il, or any other threat to this country. I think he's just following some kind of democrat affiliation. Media bullshit.
Uhum, oh my god.. great response from someone with nothing to say. Remember, when you don't have a good counter argument, just scream either "Meanie!" or "Dummy!" Works for the left all the time.
Only from the painting of obama ripping his shirt of revealing a costume with his O campaign logo on it or the painting of Bush biting the statue of liberty on the neck like he was a vampire

Awsome response from racist white trash. Did it ever occur to you that his illustrations done are what he was hired for by the corporations ? Calling him a liberal socialist is just your way of expressing your white trash supremacist views. Get your shit straight asshole.
Racist? Please cite from my previous commenst where I made a comment about RACE
My issues are with POLITICAL IDEOLOGY
Dont even TRY to bring the race card into this one
Yes it is ironic how ross supports someone against the economic system that brought him his fortune and recognition I hope he enjoys his tax increases I can only pray he winds up in the poor house like the rest of us
So why dont you get your facts straight you race bating sack of shit
he seems like a great guy, not a dueche....think i would be a bit of a dick if i had his skill lol, i mean he has all the right in the world to be a total d-bag, he's a true artist, successfull, rich, has a bitchin house, but he's not he's super nice lol, i hope when he "retires" from drawing comics he'll teach a class and i get to attend lol, he really should teach to pass on what he knows lol
i love that guy's work , i love seeing video's of him to hear words from his mouth rather than on paper , but he does an interview that's in a magazine i like that too ! he's a comic genius , a modern day michaelangelo !
Ahhhh, there's real comics! LOL, I was beginning to think it was being washed out. The Holy Grail of comic books is the only thing this guy ever does. If not for Ross people would be looking to the movies, where apparently its not easy bein a comic book hero these days. The poor boys have taken their lumps in "Hancock," "The Dark Knight" and even "Iron Man." Self-doubt, angst and inadequacies plague them. And now comes Watchmen. You want the definition of comix; REAL superheroes? Alex Ross.
yes i understand what your saying but bolland, mcfarlane and ross are artists that leave there mark on what ever they touch, romita sr out of your three is proberly visually the best, but macfarlanes spiderman, bollands batman/judge dredd and ross's kingdom come....ENUF SAID! but hey violet9spider,you know good artwork when you see it..and i totally agree with your case for top 3
Oh most definitely! Even he did the series for Image Comics called WildC.A.T.S. Another artist that I admire, but is a little controversial is Rob Liefeld. His art is amazing, and he even did some cool stuff from the "Heroes Reborn" series on Marvel Comics. Even though he is controversial, still give him the credit as an excellent artist.
No disrespect to Alex, I love his work but I feel he relies too heavily on reference to the point he's art always looks posed. The only exceptions I feel were the gatchaman artwork - they were really dynamic.
Superman, I can see that. He is basically the King of Superheros...I also love Capt. Marvel aka Shazam. IF somehow Alex's graphics could be brought to film/animation....it would turn film animation on its ear.
It's interesting that he chose Superman as his favorite hero. From his work and other comments he has made I would have assumed Captain Marvel. I'm glad he chose Supes though as he's my fave as well.
Alex Ross is awesome, but his style is different in that he paints his scenes - which goes beyond basic inking / colorist duties. I LOVE most of his work, but truthfully there have been some pieces I found flat and unappealing. I personally think that Kingdom Come is THE best thing I've ever read and seen in comics - period.
believe what ever you like. While I may be anonymous, I'm far from untallented. You however are just like every other jaded sanctimonious internet messagboard twat. So far up upon your high horse that you fail to see that you are just as unimportant as the rest of us.
You call me sanctimonious. You...the guy who initiated this whole back and forth by slagging off a largely talented and highly regarded artist. He can't be too bad. You did after all look him up in the first place.
I'm unsure of what you mean by one trick pony. Alex Ross does mainly comics because that's what he loves. His work has evolved and his style tightened in the last 13 years - look at his Superman and Batman work from initial to now and I think that's evident. Also, his time warp is not only in homage to creators, but creations as well because they are what inspired him.
Ross's stuff is alright... on a technical scale. Sometimes it does have a tendency of losing humanity, becoming stiff and his art work seems made to be mass-marketed to drooling fanboys. Although at least he's not drawing the way, cartoonist in the comics he read as kid drew and he really can draw. (unlike alot of the current hot talent who learned to draw heroes from hero comics and can only draw hero stuff.)
Alex is in a league of his own, come on kingdom come was more amazing visually as well as it was a great story, he wrote the premise for kingdom come and mark waid did the script
I've never heard of a "comic book artist" before. I know superman from the movies and stuff. Apparently he does this drawing for books or newspapers or something, and there was a picture book of superman and batman before they were movies? Did he make up the drawings first then make a movie?
Alex Ross paints heroes like no other. He has this awesome ability to give life to them and make them larger than life as well. His images are iconic and will remain that way long after the comicbook medium is long gone.
Alex is one of the greatest comic book artists EVER. He is in the class of John Romita, Jack Kirby, Bill Finger, John Byrne, and Bill Siekenwicz..the greats.
Superman is my fav superhero too! Such an American icon.

Alex Ross is awesome, but his style is different in that he paints his scenes - which goes beyond basic inking / colorist duties. I LOVE most of his work, but truthfully there have been some pieces I found flat and unappealing. I personally think that Kingdom Come is THE best thing I've ever read and seen in comics - period.

some of you treat this guy like he is Jesus with a brush.
get over it.
he is good at what he does, but he is a bit of a one trick pony. His work does not evolve. Plus he needs to get out of his time warp.

It's a great fucking trick though.
Good to see the no trick ponies coming out to criticize

believe what ever you like.

Did he make up the drawings first then make a movie?

i respect his ability, but he preaches to much in his stuff. if I wanted religion or politics I would look for it where it belongs.
artfan101 4 years ago
The essense of a Super Hero is politics and religion. Use your brain.

Alex Ross paints heroes like no other. He has this awesome ability to give life to them and make them larger than life as well. His images are iconic and will remain that way long after the comicbook medium is long gone.
