ok i am curious on how you did these. im guessing you did the standard 2 turntables a mixer and made the mix, but than edited out or added in clips from other tape. reason i ask is because i see and hear the same song with other clips over laid and the beats match. so how do you edit the tape? or did you do a left channel track and 2nd pass on the right channel and than just cut and paste the whole mix? i know it would have taken a long time to do this so accurately and the final mix is amazing.
@vinyljunkie76 We always used an in between master for this. So basically how it went was:
2, sometimes 3, turntables in the mixer recorded onto high-speed cassette-tape master (this wasn't your average cassette-deck, but a hacked deck running at 3 times the normal speed and with pitch-control, we were cassette-gurus back in the day, before we started using StudeRevoxes..). That master went through the mixer with processing (sometimes more added tracks etc.) and that signal is what you see cut.
@Meowbay so some of the splices on the reel are last min added samples after the whole thing was done. i kinda figured it was done live to tape and than edits after. unlike todays computer edits that can be done before the final is made. but still it is like seeing the edits is better to see than just hear.
any chance you can post more of the edited mixes on here or also make flac for all the classic mixes? i got the 3 in flac, but the rest in ogg. thanks
are you crazy??? this is a dutch grandmaster of mastermixes! he has a major, major mixingtable in his studio with hundreds of channels.. he is famous for al his yearmixes and colaborations with popstars..sorry...c'mon 2 turntables? be serious man..
@megamix1966 I'm 30 now and i'm a die hard 80s fan! so glad I could be around to experience that amazing decade, even if I wasn't old enough to go to a club and dance to this :P
Nice mix. Lots and lots of editing splices, especially all the stutter-edits on the Kylie track at the beginning. Oh, the days of razor blades and editing blocks ;)
OOH! I have the hundreds of CD albums, singles and HUNDREDS of 12" single and album vinyls of MANY of these artists!!! I can't believe at 3:30 you have Sandra, one of my faves! Nice mix!
OMG I cannot describe with words how much I love this!!! flawless splices.. :D:D:D:D Summer 1988 I was 7 going on 8, best times of my life!! the whole year rocked to this beat!
you can hear the warmth of the tape saturation. Hours and hours of rocking the beat over the playback head before the razor hit;s it. True skill and artistry
True audio art at its very best; who even works with reel tape anymore, let alone analog equipment? Digital allows newbies to actually record and mix in a space even in their bedrooms. This is why so much great analug equipment is turning up in thrift stores. At a Los Angeles thrift store I frequent I picked up a Tascan 38 8-track reel recorder for $199, the Tascam M-30 mixer for $99 and a Foxtex E2 2-track mastering reel recording for $99---an entire anolog studio for $300. Revox rules 4-ever!
You can find out via the tracklisting, check the link in the description. You probably mean "Burn It Up" by Beatmasters featuring P.P. Arnold, but it's mixed with something else..
you know revox will give all the new hifi equipment a good run for the money even tho the revox is over 30 years old now infact even beat it you would have to spend 100's to beat the sound and then it be hard.
I have just uploaded a video response of a mix created in a similar way. This mix was pieced together on a Teac 4 track Reel to Reel recorder, but the really crazy bits were done with an Akai So1 sampler and an Atari computer. These bits were then spliced into the tape.
I'm trying to understand how these analog mixes were made.
The DJ doing the year mix (or whatever mix or megamix of that time) would record from viynl to reel, than cut up the reel, and re-record onto the main reel and add in edits?
It's pretty similar to how the movie-theatre movies are (still) made. We (me and my cousin) used a different recording stage in between (to master the overlays, to do all the takes of records mixed together, with their speed slowly pitching up etc.), and from this recorded material we transferred to the final master (which is what you see). Sometimes you could of course break that scheme, but usually this was the way.
And of course the intermediate medium could be anything that records audio. We've used DAT-recorders, cassette-tape recorders, (the audio I/O of) VHS recorders, for the in-between storage. And in very rare occasions we transferred directly from vinyl to the master..
Could be that only the MK-II has one. It's hidden under the protective cap, so normally you won't see it. I think it does + and - 10 percent, and has a switch for zero-pitch assurance. I'll film the workings of the B77 for you someday..
