  • So fucking beautiful, Randy would have been so proud!!!

  • Alex Skolnick is amazing, the dude sounds like George Benson

  • like the comment guitaraveboy i had come to exact same conclusions you drew, from the first to the last.

  • very cool love alex,s version!!!!!!!!!!

  • Randy sure inspired lots of guitarists in many ways :P Go Alex GO!!!!!

  • hey guitarraveboy...lets hear your version of this song...

  • @oakenshanks In fact, I think he's actually right. Alex Skolnick is a good guitarist for metal standards, but when he tries to play jazz, he's quite pitiful. If you want to hear some serious jazz guitar, listen to Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Jim Hall, Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin or Pat Metheny.

  • @BDCTheSloth90 though i understand where you are coming from, this isn't exactly a great example of his jazz chops.

  • This is awesome music to listen to while your boyfriend fingers you while jostling your balls.

  • Thats nice boys, i like this version!!!!

    I like...

  • this is horrible and doesnt sound like jazz, sounds like a mess with fills out of place, a desperate need for a bass line, different drum pattern and better guitar player. No offense but I call em like I hear em To fix this, drummer needs to chill, bass player needs to use a much longer bass line and the guitarist needs to actually listen to the song and rework the parts to eliminate the mess and practice a few weeks before playing it live. Geeze from 4.53 till the end of the song = embarassing.

  • @guitarraveboy sand in a vagina = serious problem

  • Alex is so good, that he even makes elevator music xD jk. He's a beast

  • jazz, blues, metal, classical...whatever, this IS music, not fucken reggeton or justin bieber that is just some brain masturbating horrible sounds...dont deserve to be called MUSIC

  • Ahhhhhhh, how I like an acoustic bass sound! :)

  • what a beautiful!Good cover!

  • Love Alex's playing, and this tribute to Randy makes me love him even more.

  • @kikeonline music is subjective, When you get down to it... its all about opinion. So noone is better than anyone.

  • @andysciro1 True!! and thats my opinion :)

  • an amazing trio, alex is one of the greatest 80's guitar heroes but I still appreciate the fact he decided to look into jazz fusion music. well done alex, the other two are talented musicians but the band IS alex

  • now we've seen a Metal player play jazz, now i wanna see a Jazz player play metal, that would be interesting

  • @4everRock666 listen to early Megadeth Stuff, ie Chris Poland....

  • @Solfire69 oh yeah, i didnt think of that.

  • @4everRock666 And Marty Friedman and his foreign stuff outside of Megadeth.

  • @4everRock666 alex skolnik is a jazz player playing metal, not the other way round :P

  • @Metalwurst666 nah, he started with metal. true metal never diiiies :P or how about we agree that he is a diverse guitar player so we dont get into internet flame wars :)

  • @4everRock666 Chris Poland(guitar) and Gar Samuelson(drums) went from a progressive jazz band call the New Yorkers, to Dave Mustaines Megadeth. They were in the band for their first two albums, Killing is my business...and business is good, and of course, peace sells.....but whos buying? They were released due to their rampant heroin addictions. Gar died Bastille Day - 1999 of Cirrhosis of the Liver. Chris is a fusion player in his solo band, and his bands OHM & OHMphrey he did solos for LOG too

  • @XIPH0S707 yeah i know.

  • i think if u master jazz you can pretty much master any kind of guitar music playing.

  • I just find Alex Skolnick so fucking cool, He's in one jazz band and in a Thrash Metal band at the same band. Flexibility=COOL!

  • Grant Green is pretty good

  • wow this is awesome.

  • Comment removed

  • @wisesatyr72

    Heavy Metal Jazz?

Uhh I don't understand my friend, Alex might be the lead guitar of Testament but he has a side project with 2 other guys.

Just because you play in a metal band doesn't mean you're always gonna play metal, that isn't good, because you lack your playing and creativity

    Jazz = Theory plus knowledge.

  • In fact lots of metalhead guitarists love jazz music!!!

  • @bennylaichickenpie

    Yup.

I am afraid to say that the best guitar players are always metalhead..

  • @bennylaichickenpie same w/drum heads. jazz drumming baffles me, but i'll get it 1 day

  • @bennylaichickenpie I do!!!!

  • Haha heavy metal jazz isn't good? Try telling that to Megadeth.

  • I like jazz but I prefer TESTAMENT |m|

  • entertaining vid

  • the drummer ia a sheet do you know interplay

  • I loved the drums

  • That was a technical and melodic masterpiece. I'm amazed.

  • randy rhoads ftw :)

  • awesome, i love this song

  • this and war pigas are the best songs

  • Saw these dudes in concert in San Diego! Amazing show!!!

  • Wow this guy is monsterous at jazz metal and that xmas music stuff!!!!

  • how awesome is that... i guy who destroys with his playing in Thrash Metal can really destroy with jazz as well

    very talented man!!

  • Alex Skolnick is so fucking awesome

  • ehm...not talented skolnick??? What have my hears to listen to? o.O

  • skolnick is awsome but what the hell happened hear, sounds like a bunch drunk novices on a saturday night in there basement. sorry alex but this one blew ass.

  • you obviously don't understand anything about jazz.

  • im sorry but this is some sort of joke right?

please dont hate me for saying this, theres no doubt this guy is talented but dude! put some heart into it!

  • alex is so fuckign talented, and deserves more recognition. The bassist and drums are amazing as well.

  • embarrassed to say this is the first I've heard or seen of this guitarist, amazingly good,I'll have to go on itunes and check out some of his stuff.........

  • it's alright, haha

to be honest this was the first time I head about them as well, but I am extremely happy to have found them out all!

  • really.. 1st time... wow.. he was the guitarist for the band testament until 1992 at which point he left and enrolled in a full time jazz program in new york to learn to play jazz his 1st solo album was released in 2002.. hes an amazing guitarist..

  • He used to play for Tetstament, a bay area metal band, he went jazz for some reason

  • for some reason?...Jazz is almost the most challenging genre a musician can undertake,WAY more so than metal(in my opinion)...

  • I know, I'm not saying anything bad about jazz, I agree it takes more skill and is more complex than metal, I like both genres, I was just stating the fact that Alex went jazz and used to play metal. XD

  • he still plays metal i just saw him

  • Jazz isn't as hard as Classical or Renaissance. Either way, Skolnick RULES!!!

  • well you're partially right. While genre's such as Classical and Renaissance require the strictest of disciplines, unlike those catagories jazz requires possibly the most thorough knowledge of musical theory so as to improvise and make music on the fly.examples would be phd level players such as Carlton,Scofield,Rittenour and Metheny.I agree with you on this guy being a hell of a player, nice transition from the jazz to the metal part.............

  • huh??? jazz is the most difficult genre...in my opinion...rennaissance is pretty simpistic...in most cases...

  • Yeaa

  • it depends.. technically speaking I guess both have their own challenge. Jazz is more about chord/scale virtuosity.. and metal and his subgeneres, including prog have their speed and accuracy and odd times.. It was before that jazz was the most difficult. Nowdays there are a lot of metal bands wich I would say are far more challenging than jazz

  • lots of metal bands far more challenging than jazz???.....how 'bout naming just one...

  • well I ment technically challenging.. but here's a few names.. Spastik ink, Protest the hero, Symphony X.. any power metal band just to see any jazz guy trying to play those riffs without getting tired.. Angra, Any Thiago della vega solo.. the list goes on. Believe me.. I listen to a lot of jazz stuff too and the complexity is in other areas. I love pat metheny and allan holdsworth, but I would'nt call that pure jazz... if you name some technically challenge jazz I'll be more than grateful

  • check out the early stuff from Al di Meola or some John McLaughlin

  • Wow. You dont know shit about music dude.

  • @88naka maybe you can explain me then why do you say that?

  • symphony x

they are great , technical and stuff

  • ya, there both challenging but jazz is more than just scales/chords theres overall melody to songs most of the time anyway. there is speed, accuracy, odd times in jazz too. metal is so repetitive, im not saying its easy but its a lot easier than jazz. but classical blows both away so......

  • retard alex still plays for testament

  • heeey be nice, but alex has always been a jazz influenced and blues influenced player so he set out to do hwa the was and stuff so why not try your hand at some jazz? i do it, i play hardcore metal shit and then ill play clapton

  • i agree!

Same here blues and jazz influenced all the great players of metal such as Dimebag and randy rhoads!!!!!

  • yea, alot of thrash metal too believe it or not, dave mustaine is mainly a jazz player and so is kirk hammet, he does alot of jazz but not as much as dave

  • what?? dave nor kirk play jazz, Dave has admitted to knowing two scales only, Kirk is blues influenced. However Chris Poland and Marty Friedman, two lead players from megadeth who did many of the solos on megadeths best albums as well as drummer gar samulsen were all jazz players, so Megadeth does have a lot of jazz influence but it doesnt really come from dave.

  • i meant to say blues about dave and kirk sorry, look down below that comment i tried to correct it

  • no problem, its a small error no big deal. Dave was heavily influenced by Jimmy Page so that is probable. but the thing about the other megadeth guys coming from jazz bands is true, thats why i like megadeth better because they have more diverse musical influences where as the metallica guys pretty much listen to the same stuff. and for those wondering Skolnick does play metal still, i saw him with testament, he nailed all his solos perfectly, if not better than on the records.

  • oh hell yea about the megadeth thing, dave also listens to more diverse tastes for his writing influences i think too. and of course skolnick still plays metal hes fucking amazing, he was on the last testament record dont forget that, and ide call the trans siberian orchestra metal at some times really... they are a stretch but they can be pretty metal, just look up Wizards In Winter and you cant deny it

  • well, his only "diverse" records were peace sells and rust in peace. SFSGSW had Jeff Young and he sucks, and then countdown to extinction and all of his new records are bit mainstream and really arent that good.

  • actually kirk hammett went to san francisco state university to study jazz for a while

  • yeah, I agree with you.

  • @Nofuture91 When has Marty Friedman played jazz?

  • correction blues i mean

  • yeah i agree!

But they just know if they play that tuff theyre going no where just cuz its completely gone thats whats really sad no its all pop shit! really what has the worlds population come to........Im moving to italy where real music is actually popular......and no martial law there!

  • the best student the satch ever had if u ask me. over vai even. he has a better feeling for songs

  • vai is just quirky cuz its his way of leaving his signature over things but i think they both have great feeling. listen to lotus feet or sumthin

  • I think Vai gets a lot of his weird ideas from when he played with Frank Zappa.

  • i love testament but this is the best jazz ive ever heard and i like alot of jazz

  • Heavy N Jazz

  • Everyone's fantastic on playing this, a real treat..

  • What a great drummer too!

  • i think he shows off a bit too much but he holds the beat when necassary

  • I'm a thrash fan, but this is one of the most well done and original things I've heard in a while. A great take on an old ozz man tune. So glad i favorited it! Skolnick truly is a talented guitarist

  • Love the guitar tone - sounds like an electric piano. :-)

  • pric

  • One of the best and most original covers i'ver ever heard of Ozzy's GTR. 5 stars

  • do they do originals?

  • yep

  • see alot of metal musicians can play other stuff you assholes at the antimetal club

  • tru tht.

metal musicians are the fucking best.

  • A lot of them these days can. You can pretty much tell who might have a chance and who doesn't from listening to their metal work.

  • Oh my God!! Ive stoped listening to metall in the early 90 and switched to classical guitar, and completely forgot about alex. He has achieved so much over this time that is almost unbelievable.

  • R.I.P Randy Rhoads

  • he wrote this song, and without randy writing this alex would never play it.

  • What a stupid question

  • he wrote the song dude, get with the times hahaha

  • fail (i'm replying to bigguitarrists comment if this accidentally goes to the top of this page)

  • alex is really cool.

  • ALEX SKOLNICK KICKS ASS!

  • this isnt possible..you just cant marry ozzy and jazz...but skolnick did it..he is the man

  • A real Versatile Guitarist that is a guitarist all about.Smooth..........

  • I guess you've got George Benson level... or maybe Jamiroquai's Rob Harris... don't you? I bet you can't play even punk!

  • Alex Skolnick is the man! He can play extremely heavy metal, and he can play jazz, and he can play them both REALLY WELL! And what great phrasing he has! Awesome player.

  • They did a show at my school. Great fuckin' time, it was.

Meet the man himself afterwards, and had some beers at a local bar.

Then went to a guy's house and played Halo 3 with the drummer.

Skolnick rules in any bloody genre.

  • I like that!

  • To all you people out there saying that Alex sold out because he got more into Jazz, fist yourself, he got into jazz because he likes it and it's what he wanted to do, oh and he reunited back with Testament so if that doesnt make him metal enough for u assholes, like i said fist yourself. Jazz is really complicated and hard to play go learn what he played on this video then you talk shit about Alex Skolnick

  • Hear, hear. Alex Skolnick can do whatever the hell he wants. One question though: Don't jazz guys usually do the "suit-and-tie" thing??

  • Nope--no suit and tie in NYC!! Lol! Hipsters and jazz, that is the way it is done here! :)

  • Pimp, you're an idiot.

  • im sorry, i loved alex in attention deficit, but this! he's got alright jazz lines but that fuckin drummer! He sounds like he's in a garage cover band!

  • That drummer is way out of line, needs to lay back a little maybe...I cant even really make out much of the bass line because of the drummer.

  • He's multi-talented... thrash... jazz.. what next?

  • alex is really talented mutha fukers!! dat drummer is out of line...i guess this is alexs side project, but i guess he is the only good one:/

  • testament testament

  • jazz drives me crazy!! metal forever!!! he is really good though, but he should have stayed metal

  • he is metal!! Alex reunited with Testament in 2005, in addition to doing all the solos for 2001 First Strike Still Deadly, and has been touring with them ever since. New Testament album in April 2008 with the original lineup (including alex), but Paul Bostaph replacing Louie on drums.

  • thrash/speed metal guitarist turns jazzer... When I first heard of Alex's new musical direction I was confused... but he pulls off the transition quite nicely.

I hear along with stints with Trans-Siberian Orchestra he also does time in the orchestra pits on broadway from time to time now.

  • keremjazz dont be so strict.....and u cannot judge what IS jazz and what isnt...

  • What are you talking about? The bass is pretty much outlining the chord progression and Alex played several voicings of the same chords...how could you miss it?

  • no shit! fuckin newbies

  • My thoughts exactly

  • when I first heard of Alex doing this treatment with metal classics, I didn't know how it would sound.

Luckly, I love jazz as much as I love my metal. This is just a stunning performance...no other words could express it better.

  • you know alex is in a a couple metal bands right?

  • Hey dude! I thought he only plays in Testament, as far as the metal bands go between he's jazz project.

  • Drummer does not seem to have a clue

  • That's a definite Alex Skolnick improvisation on Ozzy's classic. I didn't know he'd done this until hearing this right now. Very cool indeed.

  • which ozzy song i couldnt tell?

  • Its in the title

  • goodbye to romance

  • ups.. I post my reply in the wrong place.. sorry

  • check out the whole album this song is on

Goodbye To Romance: Standards For A New Generation

one of my favorite albums. its all 80s covers. goood stuff

  • oh yeah! amazing guitar players.. but I feel that they are very rock oriented, so I don't consider them 100% jazz. Allan Holdsworth could be another example.. but again.. I feel that he have a very rock oriented thinking and technique

  • yea for sure. Alex started with a metal band called Testament. then went back to school for jazz later on when jazz caught his attention.

all 3 are great musicians and great guys too.

  • cmon man it doesnt matter if its rock oriented after all jazz is the root of rock i because of its sub genres like blues and bebop

  • Alex has got the swing! \m/
