  • Thanks for this video, I was always brought up using the old pencil through the spool method which explains a lot of frustration! I use a lot of spinning Vibrax type spinners which have an effect on the line after a while but this has certainly prolonged the life of the line.

Thanks again and Cheers from Tasmania, Australia!

  • @mdalton77 Great to hear from you in Autralia - I grew up the same way (the pencil method) you will notice a huge difference with this method.

Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water down under :)

  • @thundermistlures Sorry for the Typo - meant to spell Australia

  • lucas looks like he wants to be fishing instend of spooling line

  • @buckkiller1247 .....I think you're right :)

Thanks for tuning in and good luck on the water!

  • i got mad at mine today. i wish i seen this video. i had zebco monofil line and it twisted like crazy. went and got some braided spider wire and it seemed to have fixed my problem. i didnt spool it like you did though. do you think i will have a problem with twisting using spider wire?

  • @tapap84 . - although it would have been better to follow this method, the spider wire is more forgiving than mono, so you'll be o.k. We have a video as well for spooling braid and the key here is to make sure you start off with some sort of backing first - such as spool up with 5 or 6 wraps of mono, then use a uni-knot and then continue spooling with braid. You need a backing or your line will "slip" on you and be loose - like having zero drag.

  • great video, thanks

  • @195850 Glad you enjoyed the video and good luck on the water in 2012!

  • Love your video's they are very helpful, thanks for taking the time out of your day to make these video's.

  • @sampson2269 So glad you enjoyed our video and thanks for taking time to write to us....it makes our efforts very worth while. Until next time good luck and good fishing!

  • are you guys catch and release?

  • @TheAirSoftDude45 We practice catch and release and we also practice catch and keep - eating fish is very good for you and they are a part of our weekly diet.

Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water.

  • I've tried this a few times with mono & it works great but my concern is it looks like the line gets weakened after snugging it up!! Is this only good for braided lines? I've tried moistening it like a regular fishing knot, but it still looks weakened!! Thanks for the good tips... keep them coming!!

  • @trc460 Glad you are enjoying our videos and we have plenty more coming! Mono does weaken, so try to use fluorocarbon instead. You can spool up this same way and you will notice a big difference. For braided lines, you can spool up the same way, but will need to start off with a backing first - we have a short video which will explain this for you in detail. Thanks for writing in and good lcuk on the water!

  • Thanks I was looking for a good start to finish guide on how to spool my reel. I am curious on your thoughts about different types of line though. What do you think it best for bass fishing in a small lake? I was thinking of trying a 10 lb fluorocarbon but I'm wondering your thoughts on that. Thanks.

  • @jealuffaguS Actually, 10 lb fluorocarbon is a great choice to spool up with - it will easily handle the bass you are fishing for - good choice!

  • @thundermistlures Great. Thanks for the advice. I will try it out.

  • @jealuffaguS Glad you enjoyed the video and you will love this method for spooling up - it works great!

  • thanks man!!

  • @juventus90fan You're welcome! Good fishing to you!

  • show it closer retard

    to the reel

  • @oneshotkill559 Thanks for the feedback - we'll try to get a bit closer next time..... thanks for tuning in and until next time good luck and good fishing.

  • @thundermistlures sorry my lil brother is a dumbass.

  • @oneshotkill559 .........not a problem.......we are just happy to help and if you or your brother have any questions, just let us know. We do appreciate you writing in and hope you have a great fall season of fishing!

  • @oneshotkill559 wow, sorry but if you didn't understand this video you are the retard here :|

  • @TheRevitGuru Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for taking time to write - hope you have many great days on the water!

  • If i cant find a Lucas will a Rob or a Wendy work?

  • @Grayzer86 They'll work fine just as well :). Good fishing!

  • That kid looks like he's on suicide street

  • @Slyraider100 Hopefully he is not (on suicide street) He's just a kid. Give him a break !

    Keep fishing Lucas !

  • if i dont have a Lucas, laying on the floor works, right?

  • @AdrianDotis It's always best to have someone hold the spool for you, but if not, you can put the spool on the ground and just ensure it is wrapping off properly.

Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water!

  • @thundermistlures Lol @ "If I don't have a Lucas" hahahaha

  • Laid it on the floor and no problems...worked out fine. Thank you for the tip !

  • @abbott5150 You're welcome! Good fishing!

  • more Lucas please

  • what if you dont have someone to hold the spool of line ?

  • @abbott5150 If you have a vice, you can rig it up to hold your spool, but if worse comes to worse, place the spool on the ground and follow the same process.....it sure is easier though, if you ave someone hold the spool for you.

Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water!

  • I've seen some people just wrap three times around the spool and tie a knot. Any thoughts on this, comparing the two methods (the other method seen in your video with the lasso)?

  • @bigjallday1 Thanks for sharing this alternative method with us - we have not tried this system, but it seems as though it should work. The lasso method though, is very neat and effective.

Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water.

  • Thanks!

  • @eggolise No problem...good fishing!

  • The dumbo at BPS did a poor job spooling my reel, so I came here, and it seemed to work, went fishing, and no bird nesting, thanks!

  • @hskrpwr69 Glad to hear! Good fishing!

  • Thanks, for the vid... im ready to go mackerel fishing friday!

  • @TheAcadien67 Glad you enjoyed the video and hope you have a great time with the mackerel!

  • Finally. Someone got it right. They key is to make sure "the line hangs to the right of the spool."

    - Quick question: should there be some tension line as it's spooled on the the spinner?

    Many thanks.

  • @lagarcia85 Glad you enjoyed the video and when spooling up, just apply a bit of pressure as the line passes through your fingers.

Thanks again for tuning in and good luck on the water!

  • Finally. Someone got it right. They key is to make sure "the line hangs to the right of the spool."

    - Quick question: should there be some tension applied to the line as it's spooled on the the spinner?

    Many thanks.

  • Kid is a stud

  • @10majfar Thanks for tuning in and good luck on the water.

  • @thundermistlures

I initially had problems with line unwrapping around the reel pit, but after doing it this way it seems to be fine, thanks for the video

  • @10majfar That's great! Good fishing to you!

  • Huh. So thats what I have been doing wrong. Couldnt figure it out before.

  • @BigButter99 Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for taking time to write to us! Hope you enjoy the rest of your summer.

Hope your summer is going well and that you are having many great days on the water

  • @ThanhCuTi That's not what I meant. LOL... I was about to spool my line but didn't know how, thus the reason I found your clip. Got mine done last night. Thanks a bunch

  • Thanks for the info. It saved me some hassle!

  • @GameGlide Glad it helped! Good fishing!

Until next time good luck and good fishing.

  • Lucas dont be shy!

  • @BoMlXdrap Thanks for the encouragement for Lucas - glad you enjoyed the video and good luck on the water.

  • @ 1:08 When putting the lasso on the fishing reel with the extra line that have the basic knot do I pull the main fishing line hard all the way so that the extra line will stop at the lasso? If I'm correct when doing so .... my fishing line sorta twist around making my fishing line look all twisted .... if I'm wrong correct me please ....

  • @Ne3dles You are correct with how you are doing this....if you keep your line short, only a bit will be twisted and it will not impact anything.

Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water.

  • when you put the line on the spool and you pool on the line to bring in the knot as it will lock in . Does it matter where it locks at ? I mean is it ok to lock at the top of the spool or at the bottom or does it matter ? I am having a issue where my line is always reaching the top of my bail even if i dont put enough line on my spool.

  • @keegan0000 in this case, you will want to make sure the knot is on the low side of your spool, so that it will help offset the unevenness of your line spooling. It sounds like your reel is not spooling up properly, as the line on your spool should be evenly distributed - but give this a try and see if it helps.

  • @thundermistlures thanks for the tip . Ya i tried starting from the bottom side of the spool working my way up but it looks like my spool is taking big jump from bottom to top and then back to the bottom . I do get however good spacing from the bottom of the spool but the top is getting filled up .

  • if you have line twist what can you do about it?

  • @pbgeegee one way to get rid of line twist is to slow troll in a boat and let out all your line, with no lure or weight on it - just line. They, bring it back in slowly. If you do not have a boat, you can do this in your back yard - let out all your line and then slowly bring it in.

    Good luck

  • poor lucas he seems like Rapist :)

  • Great demo. I always wanted to know the correct way to spool the line. I'm always getting snarled up! Great video, thanks!

  • @Frazzled2011 Glad you enjoyed the video and hope you have many great days on the water!

  • terrible viddddddddddddddddddeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @mryellow1b Sorry to hear you did not like our video - thanks for tuning in though and for taking time to write to us.

Until next time, good lcuk and good fishing.

  • @thundermistlures sorry i was just mad because i was frustrated about making the "lasso"

  • Thanks for the informative video. Last night, I spooled up my new Shimano reel based on your instructions and was rewarded with a successful morning of fishing today.

I used Berkley Trilene (8 lb), and I found that I had to keep the label side of the spool facing *away* from me to ensure the line hung to the right. I also had to crank fairly slowly to avoid tangles.

  • @heavenlyfodder Gald you enjoyed the video and that everything went well for you - sounds like you had a great day of fishing as well :) thanks for writing in and until next time, good luck and good fishing!

  • Just want to say thank you for the instructions, works out great for novice anglers like myself. And the HD/Close ups are amazing!

  • @krimd00t Glad you enjoyed the video and that we were able to help. Thanks for taking time to write to us and until next time good luck and good fishing!

  • Can I use 20lb berkley XL trilene?

  • @jeffrussell13 You can use 20 lb Trilene, but the XL would be better than the XT - once you start to use heavier line, such as 20 lb test on a spinning reel, it has a tendency to coil up and become "wiry" - at least the XL may be a bit more forgiving.

Thanks for writing in and good luck.

  • Great video.

  • @vadagh So glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for taking time to write to us.

Until next time, good luck and good fishing!

  • Nice job!

  • @mrmarblefalls Thanks & good fishing!

  • Can u put 15pound on a spinning reel?

  • @rcurrier78 Yes, you can use 15 lb test line on a spinning rod, but look for a thin diameter line as it will spool up nicer and cast better.

Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water!

  • Honestly? Practically worthless. The only thing that matters is how does the line come off the spool, and how does the line go onto the reel. The closest we came to being told this is to let the line hang on the right side, suggesting a ccw movement as it comes off. But, from the same viewpoint (the viewpoint of the person operating the reel), which way does the bail rotate?

  • @WoodyNFla34482 I'm not sure, but I would assume that the bail rotates clockwise when looking down on it. That would make sense if you are unloading the line from the spool and loading it on to the reel, since then the rotations are opposite one another. That's how every spinner I have is anyway.

And how is this video practically worthless? You can't see the benefit the tangling your line behind the boat to get twists out? I think that's a great idea, but I never thought to do that before.

  • @WoodyNFla34482 From the viewpoint of the person operating the reel, the line needs to come off the line dispenser, in the same direction that the reel is spinning, Sorry you did not find our video helpful, but thanks for taking time to write to us.....until next time good luck and good fishing.

  • Thanks for the video, I never knew how to properly spool a reel. Seeing these tips should make fishing a lot more fun without dealing with line twist.

  • @Warghost1000 We are very glad you enjoyed the video and we hope you have a great year on the water!

  • @Warghost1000

I did this and everything got into a kinked up mess.

  • That poor kid looks morose. Back straight young man, stand up tall and mouth closed! You are on the interwebs!

  • @blatantmisconception Thanks for tuning in - good fishing.

  • @blatantmisconception Shutup and just watch the video....

  • @HendrixForce

    HAHAHAHAHA! Right on! Poor kid...

  • Thanks for the very helpful video! Would you recommend the same technique for braided fishing line? (or is this braided line you are using?)

  • did you put the line through the biggest eye guide of the rod?

  • @MiCx023 Yes.....I did. In fact, you can feed the line through all the eyes if you want, as this will make it even easier to spool up.

Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water!

  • Sir I really need your help...I'm a newbie so im gonna ask a stupid question =D what I bought a Mitchel Rod Premium2 long 12" - 14" and a mitchel X800 Reel, I need to know if i can use this gears in Dropshot fishing? and what line do i need to use?? please i need your help I really want fishing and I wanna start in a good way thank you

  • @Justin280107 You can drop shot rig with this set up if you want to, and also, 8 lb to 10 lb test monofilament line would be a good line to start with. Stren is a good brand and Bass Pro also has their own brand called Excel, and it is economical and very good also.

Be sure to check out our Thundermist Fishing Tips web site as we have plenty more tips for you there, that you may find very helpful. Until next time, good luck and good fishing!

  • I assume it should be facing to the left if you're reeling in right handed then?

  • @lapointeric It does not matter if your are reeling left handed or right handed - the key is the rotation of the spool and on most spinning reels, that would mean that if you are facing the spool of line, it should be hanging down on the right.

Hope this helps & thanks for taking time to write to us and for tuning in.

Until next time, good luck and good fishing.

P>S> we also have more tips for you at our Thundermist Fishing tips web site

  • thank you soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much i would be screwed with out u great vid

  • @Dodaderf We are very happy that we were able to help - thanks for tuning in and until next time, good luck and good fishing.

P.S> we have plenty more tips on our Thundermist Fishing Tips web site.

  • when i want to spool my spinning reel always the top of the reel has more line than the bottom so its crooked. how do u do it to have the line go evenly throughout the reel

  • @hrazdan91205 Sometimes the reels are off a bit and this causes the problem you are having, so you may need a new reel - however -

Another possible problem could be, when you tie on your line on to your empty spool, the knot may cause this problem to occur. So try ensuring that the knot is on the back of your spool, then begin to spool up.

Also, you may want to ensure that your spool is on correctly.

See if this makes a difference.

Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water

  • when i want to spool my spinning reel always the top of the reel has more line than the bottom so its crooked. how do u do it to have the line go evenly throughout the ree

  • hahahahahhaha the kids like wtf hurry up i have a date lol

  • @FunnyShitToday Actually though, he's very patient. Thanks & good fishing!

  • Thanks for the tip about the Lasoo Knot, I've been using a Slip Knot for years, but your idea is much quicker and not so fiddly.

    Tight Lines and Happy Fishing.

  • @theplanetking Glad you enjoyed the video & the tips - thanks for writing in and good luck on the water!

  • takes a time for loading the good res mode but worths

  • @Akhius Thanks! Good fishing!

  • that's cool! thanks a lot man. how much distance should i leave for the reel to prevent over-filled?

  • @yungagnes Glad you enjoyed the video.

When filling up your spinning reel, you will want to be sure not to fill your spool to the top, but rather, leave about 1/6th of an inch of space, between your line and the spool.

This will ensure that you have maximized the amount of line in your spool, but yet, not overfill it.

Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water.

  • Just about to spool up to go slam some Rainbows and decided to have a look to see the best way to spool up would be. Used your tips and am heading to Meaford Ontario.

I have a tip which I sorta stumbled upon today for DEspooling a spool. Grab a "Square Head" (Robertson) Screewdriver and a Power Drill. Stick the screewdriver in the power drill and tie your line to the metal neck of the screewdriver. Set your drag to super loose and drill away! The line will then slide of the screewdriver.

  • @omegalink72 Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for sharing your de-spooling tips with us and our viewers!

  • @thundermistlures Hey no problem. Also, you can then put the plastic line holder on the screewdriver in the drill and point it at you to spool your real.

Slammed some nice bows last night! 3 of us went and within 3 hours we were each at our limit. Biggest one caught was by my Uncle and it was 7lbs. 12oz. We fished all night and bottom sat using Brown roe. 7 eggs, 3 floaties and some split shots about 8"-12" up the line to cast. Looking forward to some nice fillets tonight mmm...

    Thanks Again!

  • Hey, Lucis is great, and ThunderMist Lures videos are so helpful for me. Thanks.

Here is my tip to prevent line twist. This works on monofiliment line. Spool the line on the reel in the same direction as it draws off the spool as in this video. Then secure the end of the line to the spool and remove the full spool from the reel. Rest the reel spool top down in a bowl of hot tap water to cover all the line on the spool. The heat make line remember the new spool. If this fails please tell me.

  • @DAILEYericCaryUSA Glad you enjoyed the video and many thanks for sharing your tip with us and our viewers. Much appreciated!

Until next time, good luck and good fishing.

  • MUCH easier to see! Thanks again!

  • @411sponge That's great! Good fishing!

  • haha maybe a week ago my friend did the pen thing :P

no wonder his line has been like a slinky each time we go fishing!

  • @NinjaHotPocket Thanks for writing in and sharing your friends story with us!

Until next time, good luck on the water.

  • @gazzalanche Glad to help. Good luck fishing!

  • awesome vid!! just bought a couple of new rods and reels and tackle and line etc and this is perfect for me to get it right first time every time!! thanks heaps!!

  • What is the ideal spinning reel size for a seven foot rod, medium-light action with 8 pound test flourocarbon?

  • @nkazahaya A spinning reel that holds 110 yds to 150 yards of 8 lb mono would be a good size reel to use....depending also on what you are fishing for.

Personally, the smaller reel which holds about 110 lbs of 8 lb test would be ideal - but if you are fishing for bigger game fish that will be taking out plenty of line and taking long runs, then the larger size whihc hold around 150 yds would be best.

Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water!

  • @thundermistlures Thanks, I appreciate the help!

  • @nkazahaya No problem! Good fishing!

  • great video, thanks!

  • @fiveohmustang Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for taking time to write to us - until next time, good luck and good fishing.

  • Are you related to lucas?

  • @andyart11 Lucas is Ivo's nephew. Thanks!

  • im sry but is lucas someone you know? cause if not id like to be fishing with you guys or something haha but you should do a episode on baitcaster reels/rods or combo...cause i was thinking of going to a baitcaster to have in my artillery for fishing..and is sufix line as good as it says..and um..oh yeah!..can you make a episode on salmon fishing/making eggs for salmon fishing then rigging it?..thank you!!

  • @Reptilesandfish Nice to hear from you . We have a video on using a bait caster which you may find interesting - you can find it on our channel or on our Thundermist fishing tips web site.

Suffix line is good, as are many others.

Thanks for your suggestion on the salmon eggs. we will keep that in mind & try to do an episode on it for you.

Thansk for writing in and for tuning in - until next time, good luck and good fishing!

  • Very interesting video, sometime also expert fishermans could forgot this basic. Thanks!

  • @tubbissimo76 Thanks & good fishing!

  • Very interesting video, sometime also expert fishermans can forgot this basic. Thanks!

  • i know this may seem like an odd question, but do you have any tips to fish from the surf in the Caribbean?

  • @wibblemu9 Try fishing in early morning or evening into dark. The fish will come closer to shore within casting distance at these times. To take fish, you may try a few ways - still-fishing with a 3-way rig - casting using spoons - casting a jig and work it along bottom. Casting a body bait (crank bait) will work provided that it's heavy enough to allow you long casts.Try to cast as far as you can using longer rods. If you're using cut-bait or natural bait, change your bait evey half hour. Thanks
