Does anybody know which SSD I can use in the new Asus UX31E ultrabooks? They appear to have the mSata format but I cannot find their original replacement SSD.
These look really cool, it's a shame that they only make them up to 80 GB though... It's also worth waiting for any bugs to be worked out in the next generations. So maybe next year.
Has anyone been able to successfully add this to their laptop with a mini-PCIe slot? I understand the leads on the mSata compared to m-PCIe are different, but two things conflict here. 1. Joker face above states clearly "both of these has a plug at the end that many of you might recognize as a mini PCI-express that plug actually is compatible with both mini PCI express interfaces, which you may have seen with some wireless cards, BUT you can also use it for mSata."
and 2, on the Overview of the product page on NewEgg it states "Supporting SATA signals over a PCI Express (PCIe) mini-connector"
So what is it, does anyone know if this WILL actually work? I have a Gateway NV59 laptop with 2 Mini-PCIe slots on it, and I'd like to use this as a boot drive. So for you tards that don't get the point of this in a laptop, if you could have both 200+ read/write speeds on a OS drive with 500+ platter drive in the main HDD slot, you get speed with space...
I don't think these will work on a PCIe slot, they are meant for mSATA. The socket must either support mSATA only or be a dual-purpose mSATA / PCIe slot. Most of the dual-purpose slots are found on laptops with WWAN support.
@crazy88boss These are a niche product, the form factor and size obviously intends them to be used with embedded systems, HTPCs, and other small systems. If you're going to be nitpicking over performance comparing it to a full size 2.5" drive then you have no reason to get this one to begin with.
@crazy88boss It's not a laptop component.. And I don't see anyone but you trying to compare this to a full size SSD, I think you have your 99% statistic quite backwards.
@crazy88boss And a 2.5" SSD can be used in laptops as well, does that make it a laptop component? Most laptops don't use mSATA for the same reasons, regular 2.5" drives are cheaper and perform better.
@crazy88boss mSata only does up to SATA II, and some laptops have both a 2.5" slot and an mSata slot, so the point is to have a relatively fast SSD + a relatively large HDD.
@Freak0NatureX if he woulf tell prices, people who can't think like you will come watch this vid in 6 months and they'll say : Damn newegg prices are shit! im not buying from them =O
@onesound69 i've always received my ocz rebates faster than other companies for the ssd and power supplies i've bought in the past. I always received the rebate in card form rather than check though.
Paul: Thanks for yet another great review. Problem I'm having with a product I would otherwise have wanted to buy given the form factor and such is what the other posters are saying about OCZ products in general. I saw a review you did on an OCZ 850w PSU that I was pretty much sold on but now, I'm wondering if I should go elsewhere. I would love to see Newegg do some product reliability reviews when these kind of things happen.
I keep having SSD problems with OCZ .They keep dieing I am having to play the RMA tap dance with them I am getting tired. The drives in question are vertex 2 and vertex1 SSD. I will buy corsair from now on.
@NewRisingSong Ocz is one of the best ssd's in the market right now due to there sandforce chip. I do admit there tech support is worthless and if you need help you have to look it up in there forums. But other than that there great.
@cisco760ca OCZ is only good at numbers (benchmarks - prices) , their products such as Vertex 2 are more likely to be broken in a few months. If you wanna play with RMAs then OCZ is the right way to go. They have a high rate of easy to fail products. Intel for SSDs , period.
@Veence1987 Do what you like mate, i have given a lot of my money to OCZ so i have my reasons to suggest something like that (i know many other people like me). Think twice before you buy from them especially if you looking for SSD spend some extra money and go to intel. And btw OCZ PSUs suck so badly, noisy and expensive... If you already own their products and you are happy, then i guess you are one of the few lucky customers.
@NewRisingSong I do own quite a few products from OCZ and I own a lot of people who also use OCZ products. I think YOU are one of the few ''unlucky'' customers.
@00101110o no, but listen at 1:15.. he says they are both compatible with mini pcie and msata.. and i googled that they are identical, and you can plug the msata into pcie, but it will not work and vice versa.. thats why i asked "so can you put these in pci e *or not*?
@CharlietoKind There are some mobos, mostly mini-itx boards, that have a port that is wired for both, but you have to short certain pins to make it usable as one port or as the other.
@CharlietoKind and i said no. miniPCIe/mSATA devices can be used interchangeably, but PCIe (x1, x4, x8, x16) are much larger and cannot use mPCIe/mSATA without an adapter.

This guy is good. Clear speaking voice, knows what he's talking about, explains the use of the particular product.
As for the video, I would suggest adding text and alternate views during the spec rundown 2:23 - 3:13

I really want to try one, but like already said, 30GB for $75 is too steep. If it was closer to $40-45 I would definitely get one.

@roakfurt No, you can not. PCIe x1 slot has fewer pins and is physically incompatible with mini PCIe.
