  • Useless.

    Where to put the minigun?

  • AAAAAAND again, SKYNET!

  • Don't worry, Bond, your mission should only take 85 seconds.

  • newscientist is mostly bullcrap and full of itself

with its lazor pew anti aircraft gun on ships

    its really dumb

  • I hate you Catherine de Lange

  • What a coincidence, I was sitting on my porch the other evening inundated with bugs and I thought to myself "You know I need more of these things flying around my head, I wonder if it's possible to build some?".

In other news scientists created the first child tantrum robot. It could possibly be used for spying at supermarkets.

  • warning!! bug zapper nearby

  • That moth is a spy!

  • Insect??

  • Hope it comes with a robot fly swatter.

  • Did anyone notice that this youtube vid is less than the robot's flying time? LOL

  • All the scientists of the world are busy to invent spy machines & robos to make their fu*kin future researches secret. GOOOOOOOOOSH !!!!!

  • No Richie Rich references?

  • The latest spy-gadget?!? Yeah... cause noooooobody's gonna notice that!

Why not go with the same old "to search natural distaster sites"?

  • But weit what if enemys use Robot-frogs to detect and destroy owr Robot-insects.

  • @positivoshow then our enemies are obviously better than us.

  • Yeah. Let's make a spy gadget that people will instinctively want to swat.

  • sexy voice lulz

  • Soon we will use them to attack al queda and the taliban !!

  • I envisage this being used to search for survivors in a disaster site.

  • @hivebrain

Or worst case scenario, being used for disaster on the remaining survivors...

  • That is pretty cool, Now all they have to do is improve battery technology, or paint it with Solar Ink/paint so it could recharge itself

  • these little tiny videos are very uninformative

  • tryin to spy on me while im in the shower ehhh??!! well ill give you something to look at!

  • everything come become the latest spy gadget nowadays...

  • @gettavid

Natures had 5 billion years to develop it.

  • aw man all theses mini spy devices is getting me paranoid... :S

next time i squash a fly i'll yell: "YOU FKN SPY!!!! YOU'LL NEVER UNCOVER THE TRUTH!!!"

  • @gettavid Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Nature is incredibly efficient.

  • Yeah since we can't do it better lets take desing from nature

  • latest? no i seen a MUCH better one.

  • @ericown

    Latest, maybe.

    Best? Nope.

  • If this spy lasts 85 seconds - how long did 007 manage?

  • Am i the only one that read it as "robo-incest "

  • HI im the wind!!! i take u out in less than a sec

  • Hmm latest spy gadget for 85 seconds? I don't think so.

  • Hi I'm the narrator? And I sound as if I state facts as if they're questions?

  • They always say these things "can become the latest spy gadget" but I have yet to see anyone who is able to put anything on one to spy with. Forget putting a camera, video storage, and a battery to run it all on one of these.

    But its still cool.

  • @SPYK3O I think the wings of that thing can be solar powered and fly for hours. unfortunally, it doesn't have the strenght to carry anything...like a wireless cam for instance

  • it's adorable~

too bad it's destined to be a child's play thing before anything else.

  • If they connected a string to the wings that attached to a small generator, they could possibly get a lot more fly time.

  • thats really cool

  • they should use energy from the motion of the wings to feed back energy for powering the motors.

  • @G3org3Master LOL!

  • Well now that everyone is turned off of these because of "Big Brother" and spying, these could also be used to explore collapsed buildings, or tunnels, etc. to look for survivor's, as well as preparing those who go after people in said instances, because now they know what the conditions to get to those people are like. Granted a little bit more control is needed, but that'll come with development.

Think about it for more than a few seconds...

  • This robo reminds me of Dan Brown novel "Deception Point"

  • now finding what this could be used for is the real challenge!

  • Best NewScientist videos are the ones where even they don't know wtf it is for.

  • Simpsons did it.

  • This is perfect for my boobspy project.

  • Cool? Nah. More like 1984...

  • okay guys. i got this robot who can spy on our target for 58 seconds. lets hope he says something useful!

  • @rgbgdrunkenmaster I realize you're being facetious, but battery and motor technologies continue to improve, so eventually a model that size will be able to stay in the air much longer than 85 seconds.

  • @rgbgdrunkenmaster No big deal as batteries are becoming smaller and can provide more and more energy. By the the time the energy becomes available the supply is already in demand.

  • @rgbgdrunkenmaster Prototypes are meant as proof of concept

  • @rgbgdrunkenmaster lol ^.^

  • @rgbgdrunkenmaster Yes, but you also have a device that can traverse a distance in 58 seconds and hopefully attach itself somewhere, perhaps a tree, and listen in to subjects perhaps having a quiet conversation in an empty (so they think) park

  • @nwstraith cept they would need to add a recorder of some sort thus making it heavier and power for the recording device which should bring us down to 10 sec's of fly time if we want to record for more then a minute

  • @rgbgdrunkenmaster 85 seconds *

  • @rgbgdrunkenmaster yes this was also my first thought. This robos are all shit in comparison to the creation power of the nature

  • @rgbgdrunkenmaster

he would probably say, WTF is that??

  • @rgbgdrunkenmaster noob it could be used in military for spying the rooms to check if there is someone in or not, or to see where are the hostages held. not eavesdrop

  • @Shketri you dont understand funny comments do you :O

  • Yea more ways to spy on people yea.

  • someone has to be very stupid to be spied by that

  • @PeterD2S It's small and presumably reasonable quiet. All you have to be is slightly inattentive.

  • @PeterD2S I would swat it lol

  • I think the reason the voice always say stupid things like "It could become the latest spy gadget" it an attempt to make it sound interesting to people with no interest in the simple advancement of science. The fact that we are moving forward is enough for me, even if i could never fully understand all the work that went into this small device.

  • @thethingthatwants

Initially they started posting these videos without providing and information on potential benefits, and some of them did seem exasperatingly stupid for example; the 'running elephant' experiments.

  • @thethingthatwants A year ago I wrote to their videos that they should add comment about how their random and short stories of scientific progress could be useful. That's the reason they are saying that.

  • @thethingthatwants I think it's because people always question it with "how is this useful??" or "FIND A CURE FOR CANCER!!!" NewScientist probably say those things at the end for possible ideas.

What people don't understand is, little advancements in science, whether you think it's useful or not, is necessary for making other advancements.

  • @YuneShik I agree. We wont find a cure for cancer and other things if we don't continue to advance in other things. Like this robot bug. Maybe we made a new technology for it that we realize can be used to cure a specific illness. So yeah i agree we can always be continuing other things to improve on more important things.

  • @thethingthatwants orrr........it can become the latest spy gadget....

  • @thethingthatwants advancement comes first application comes later, TV was rideculed when it was first demonstrated. no one could see a practical use for it

  • @thethingthatwants That's true, but making something in the lab is one thing, finding an application for it is something different entirely. They are not attempting to get the public interrested, they are just stating possible applications for it although I think making this a spy gadget is LAME!

  • @thethingthatwants i agree and well said

  • @thethingthatwants it is also probably being funded by the DoD... for this and more sinister purposes.

  • @thethingthatwants I agree, but it should also be considered that things like this are being researched to use in actually spying applications. Similar to how those drones are used to hover around buildings in desertland

  • did it die? :P

  • You should search for Delfly Micro - it's several years old and way smaller than this.

  • @littlestworkshop well i bet its not done either. ^^''''''

  • @littlestworkshop

To move exactly how an insect moves, you would have to be an insect, by definition. if you cant spot the similarity between that device and insects compared to traditional small aircraft and insects. i'll give you a little clue, its the flapping wings and how they move. also i sense the roof is high as they are going to be testing flying machine in there, just a guess though!

  • Comment removed

  • @littlestworkshop

the fact that you dispute that this was modelled on an insects flight is beyond me, i guess there was no inspiration to you, it just HAPPENS coinsidentally to stay airborne the same was insects do. just like you HAPPEN to specialise in this micro-niche field. personally i dont buy it, not calling you a liar or anything but if something sounds like a cat or looks like a cat but tells me its a dog, i would still think it was a cat..

  • @blazednlovinit cats can't talk so would say it was a dog

  • @SheepJumpFish wouldn't*

  • @SheepJumpFish

so cats dont talk but dogs do talk to you?

  • @blazednlovinit neither can actually talk so the cats can't talk to the dogs which is what he said, silly

  • @SheepJumpFish

that wasnt the point i was making, it doesnt matter..

  • @blazednlovinit you actually thought I was being serious?

  • @SheepJumpFish

dude, its youtube, you cant judge everyone on your own standards cos theres alot of idiots in the general masses. also sarcasm doesnt translate too well without tonality (for me anyway)

  • @blazednlovinit I know, I just found it quite funny acting like one of the idiots and people get pissed at making stupid comments which is all the more funny

  • @blazednlovinit Woah dude, give us some of that stuff that lets you hear talking cats and dogs.

  • Awesome!:)

  • cool

  • thumbs up if u are 162 viewer

  • not exactly stealth

  • mmmk.

  • But I don't want to be spied on :<

  • @finalcloud13 MAWHAWHAHWHAWHAHA! I C UR POOPINGS!

  • Then no?

  • @wolfganggangwolfe get a life, fag!
