  • sent chills down my spine...the chord progressions are beautiful

  • Who are those morons who disliked this???????????

  • The first time I ever cried because of a song was about 10 years ago maybe a little long at my great grandfathers military funeral. He was one of the veterans that actually made it back from W.W.2. his great deed that he did was using a car battery and gator clips to keep the smoke stacks or whatever they are called welded up straight. And because of this he saved the lives of every man and woman aboard that ship. And I am honored to have know him while I did.

  • @25JamesC And to any and all of the Armed Forces, past, present, and future I thank you.

  • Honestly, why in the world would you dislike this.?

It's a tribute to one of the greats.

    Seriously...

  • beautiful

  • very very sad.

  • When my life got too out of hand, I threw on the headphones and listened to Maynard... He made my life right and I'm gonna to miss him.

  • oh...my....god.

    This is....

    beautiful.

  • I have a sticker that says "trumpet hero" and I think Maynard needed that sticker.

  • Miss Him Man! Great Musician....

  • Mis him so much man. He was a good mucisian...

  • He was it!

  • does anyone know where i can find music for this i want to try and get a group to play this?

  • apparently thirteen people have no taste in music. R.I.P Maynard

  • He played TAPS for his cat... that made me sad. RIP Maynard.

  • Love you

  • Maynard,(salutes) you have done your duty to amaze and entertain and teach trumpet players and all jazz musicians alike, your legendary screams and solos will forever be in the hearts of all jazz musicians. your amazing recordings will always serve to entertain and enlighten younger and older musicians altogether. you will never be forgotten. • Maynard come to my school a few years ago for our annual Jazz and Chilli. I was probably in 5th grade for that, so I missed out on getting to watch a great play.

  • goosbumps every time

  • I wish I could have seen him live... man what a sound he had!

  • I got to see Maynard in concert twice. Once in a stadium, once at the Hotel Utah. Long live great big band music! We miss you, MF.

  • im sry but isnt taps reserved for military personnel? this was awesome though

  • @TheTrumpetWhoCould Re: "im sry but isnt taps reserved for military personnel?"

Can you or anyone cite in the U.S.Code where it states this?

All I can find is a House proposal to amend Title 36 to make Taps a "National Song of Remembrance".

    Re: "this was awesome though"

Agreed. As awesome as the late musician himself.

  • @tsntana I've often been asked to play at for fallen police officer's memorials.

  • @tsntana It's Military including Police, Firefighters, and other immediate responders

  • wow just amazing.. RIP Maynard

  • RIP Maynard.. a trumpet hero in my eyes

  • that was the first time i cried to music...... ever

  • Rip

  • Hes playing TAPS in heaven :)

    R.I.P. Maynard

  • Another very emotional song composed for a fallen trumpet player is "Adam Rapa - Requiem (for Bill Chase)." If you had any emotional feelings from this piece, you will feel deeply moved by the requiem for Bill Chase.

  • Maynard Fergusen would have been proud of this.

  • @TheSaxWizard Maynard Ferguson IS proud of this.

  • RIP best trumpet play there ever was.

  • A fitting arrangement for a man who inspired more than one generation to the power, grace and beauty of music.

  • 0:48 om NOM NOM mouthpiece! Maynard is truly the greatest trumpet player EVER!!!! R.I.P <3

  • absolutely breathtaking :')

  • i love this song just like everyone else, but to be honest i think the tear off at 1:23 isnt really appropriate for this song, just my opinion

  • @LemonLimeFlavoured It would be, if it was for anyone other than Maynard.

  • @LemonLimeFlavoured I would normally agree, but it's maynard. It's made for him, and he did stuff like that all the time...besides all that...he's playing in "the stratosphere" and that's not easy to get a really clean release on a note that high..

  • I had the honor of watching Maynard at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver CO. 1986 or 1987. My fellow friend and trumpet player introduced me to Maynards music I had never heard of him in my life. After my first time listening to him, I was hooked like peanut butter with ur favorite jelly. Sadly I had forgotten about Maynard over the years. It was actually another Maynard YouTube video that I learned of his passing in 2006. Even Chuck Norris will never have "The Chops" that Maynard had. (lol)

  • RIP Maynard, we all miss you.

  • This is the most beautiful arrangement of a famous song that I have ever heard in my entire life. Maynard is one of the most talented trumpet players in the world and this song is a great tribute to him.

  • In 1980, I began playing trombone. Maynard Ferguson was introduced to me by a family friend and inspired me to play double B-Flats on the trombone. He was truly an inspiration to all who play a brass instrument and a true contributor to music as a whole. He will be missed. I'd "youtubed" him to share him with my sons only to find he'd passed.

  • Rip

  • BEAUTIFUL!!! This song puts tears in my eyes everytime i hear it. Whoever composed this did an amazing job.

  • Triste ein!

  • beautiful song made that much better...

  • This is definently one the most beautiful pieces ever composed. It is so sad to know that one of the greatest trumpets players of all time passed away. We love you Maynard. Let your music be played on in us all.

  • beautiful..absolutely beautiful

  • they should of played this on 9/11

  • i was a trumpet player, and i had a dream growing up that i was gonna be the best of all time. i gave up on my dream when i went to college. i now have a daughter that i love more than anything in life. listening to this most beautiful piece of music by the one trumpet player that i looked up to in my life is making me cry and releasing out all the pain inside of me losing my dream. i loved his music, and what i can tell all of you is never give up on your dream. god bless you Maynard Ferguson

  • tears in my eyes, i now want this at my funeral

  • Maynard, You will always be respected, ima be as good as u one day...

  • Does anyone know who the players were in this?

  • @franklinjake I am friends with Walter White, who wrote and played all the parts. He did not play at MF's funeral though.

  • The 9 dislikes are flute players

  • This is the definitve Taps.

    Elliott Oppenheim, Trilllium Brass Trio

  • Now THIS is the version I want played at my funeral (and then the New Orleans explosion of dance and trumpet)!!!!!!! I hope that when I play my first mission for Bugles Across America, I can be of comfort to someone.

  • Amazing

  • 9 people have no taste in music at all

  • you 9 dislikes burn you are horrible

  • wish whoever was on the high C laid into it more and played in tune...:-/ but it's a beautiful song. Maynard will for ever be in our hearts

  • RIP Maynard. I love you :)

  • Whoever the 9 people who disliked this out of some 119.5 thousand people, screw you.

  • godly

  • very, very nice!

  • Our beloved and cherished musician friend MF will forever live within us all. Godspeed, and may your high Cs ring in our ears forever! RIP Maynard... You rocked us all in Yreka,CA in ~1975 with "Hey Jude"!!!!!

  • I REALLY LOVE this... Can someone PLEASE put me in touch with the man who arranged this? I want to do this on my debut album to honor the man who inspired me to pick up a trumpet...

  • @Batman2015 *sigh* Its in the description but since ppl have a hard time reading that section it was written by Walter White.

  • This is the version of taps that I want played at my funeral

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • we miss ya Maynard r.i.p

  • If you really want to play taps on a regular basis, go to "bugles across america dot org" - all one word - and sign up to do it. This is a national organization that was founded by Tom Day, a former Marine. He has trumpet players all over the country play TAPS at the funerals of veterans and at patriotic ceremonies. There are state director that you can connect up with to be on a call list.

  • 9 dislikes? wow, whats wrong with you people?

  • Ive had this in my favorites for 2 years now. I just re-listened to it again remembering how great it was. My entire body went cold and my eyes began to water. It is still, to this day, extremely moving. Great piece.

  • I mean the whole arrangement. Every trumpet player knows how to play taps.

  • @cfieldtrpt1 You can buy it off of Walter White's site

  • Does anyone know where I could find music for this. It would be a great veterans' day composition. Of course there would be no one to scream like the big guy could. RIP

  • @cfieldtrpt1 the notes are easy play it by ear and all the notes are open with no fingers pushed down

  • @blybroncs15 uh I think he meant the entire arrangement. You could transcribe it without too much trouble so yes.

  • I have the MP2 Audio file taken from this video. It is CD quality if you are interested.

  • Every single time I watch this, at 1:25, when that picture comes up, a tear comes to my eye, and a smile to my face. Maynard will never be forgotten.

  • I have to say, The reason the view count of this video is because of me, listened to this thing prolly 1000 times

  • Beautiful

  • Very fitting composition in MF style. Good job.

  • Manyard came through St. Paul in the mid 70's. He was my hero then. He is my hero now. During break we could go backstage and talk to him and get an autograph. I asked him what mouthpiece he used. I can't remember his exact answer, but he gave it as though we were longtime friends. A true gentleman, a hard worker, and an unforgettable inspiration. R.I.P. brother.

  • beautiful version and very appropriate for Maynard in his unique style. This is a fitting tribute to a man who gave us another beautiful take on the trumpet and what it can do!

  • Love it! this is wonderful, there is no excuse for dislikes on this. Just ignore the ignorant.

legit question, I always hear taps in the key of Bflat, starting on an F, and here is no different, but I have heard it in different keys, is there an "original" key? Which is used most often? just wondering.

  • @OhSweetOz you can play it in any key you like. The original key is the open intervals on a bugle or trumpet without engaging any valves- (concert Bb on a Bb trumpet). I suggest you p[lay it wherever you can make it sound nice. I prefer to play it in concert Bb (I call it the Spanish key -Si) but many players have a hard time making the sustained high G sound nice so put it where you want!

  • @davidlongoria i don't personally play trumpet, it was just an observation I had having heard taps many times ;) but interesting, thanks

  • Really? Why does someone just want to dislike this video? For what purpose is that doing anyone. It was what was played at his funeral. Come on!

  • @hinkamperj especially since its taps

  • @hinkamperj That what I'm saying! So disrespectful of them

  • I can't stop listening to this.

  • Why did anyone dislike this video?! It was played for his funeral!

  • i just realized this song is meant for the people who influence peoples lives. maynard was a very influential playing to my school. and may he rest in a better place where he can play all the jazz he wants.

  • im cryin

  • Loved the arrangement and also the man being honored. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live several times and he was always a class act.

dudepower100--where did your quote come from.."He wasen't the first to play a double high c....." That's a great and accurate summary of Maynard.

  • I have never been so proud to be a trumpet player than right now, listing to the most beautiful, tear-jerking song I have ever heard. Maynard was the best and is an example to all brass players to what they can be.

"He wasen't the first to play a double high C on stage, but he was the first to use it as a weapon."

  • Stunning. Absolutely stunning. By far THE MOST beautiful song I have heard in my entire life. I will never forget the day the world lost one of the greatest trumpet players the world has ever seen. The very first day of school of my sophomore year of high school. Even though I am a euphonium player, he was one my biggest idols. I'm sure I speak for myself and the rest of the brass world, when I say we all died a little with him. Rest In Piece Boss. We love you Maynard.

  • You should post a download link for this Audio.

  • R.I.P. Maynard </3

  • Where do we buy the music to this arrangement?

  • @mlpackard all you got to do is listen. *hint* none of the notes use fingerings if ur on a Bb instrument. RIP MAYNARD!!! u were my inspiration to quit classical and focus on jazz

  • A beautiful tribute for a beautiful musician. I saw Maynard at the Tampa Theater in the mid 80's and he put on an awesome show. I was floored by the power of his playing and the sheer musicality and energy of the band. R.I.P. Maynard.

  • I play trumpet I wish I was able to see him playatleast I have youtube to show me his ways of the oh so great trumpet

  • This piece is so beautiful. The description is depressing. :((

R.I.P. Maynard Ferguson! One of the best!!!!

  • the 5 dislikes are from people who missed the like button from the tears in their eyes

  • Awsome arraingment and performance! Though I got to see Maynard peform on a couple of occaisons, I never met him. He is certainly missed......Thanks for sharing...JT. Wyper

  • I met Maynard when I was a teenager in London at a workshop, he inspired me to make a career in music, I´m 60 now and still playing proffesionally, god bless you Maynard a really great guy.

  • It wouldve been awesome if Maynard just popped out of the grave and played this with his fellow trumpeters at his own funeral... Scary but awesome :)

  • amazing...miss him!

  • Class act, Maynard and the boys...Maynard was amazing over the years and always was on the road.Sure glad we had him perform in St. Cloud...He loved to show the school kids how Great Live Jazz is done.He will be missed and yet his Music will carry on forever!!! Thank You Boss.....Rhodan/Crusher

  • Just beautiful !

  • Wow...that's truly chilling. R.I.P. Maynard.

  • my the greatest trumpet player rest in peace

    R.I.P Maynard

  • Who in the hell would dislike this song. What is wrong with you?? One of the greatest trumpet players and musicians of our time has passed. That is the only thing that there is to dislike about this situation.

  • This a really good version of this song. It's awesome.

  • Hearing this makes me want to get back on my horn asap!

  • @larrybowden12 please pick it back up!! im a junior in high school, and i have all the solos and duets for everything. please never let go of your musicality. music is a gateway for so many wonderful things, and the joy that it can bring people, just look at the reviews on this video!! this is my goal as a player either before i die, or right after i leave LSU Tiger Band once i get there.

  • That gave me chills! Excellent!

  • Play this one at mine...

  • Ok I'm requesting it now

  • it makes me misty every time and every hair and goosebump come up on me

  • Even in his death, Maynard is still the best. This piece proves it.

  • Wow, you really think that was the last song he played? And he didn't play for his last few days? He must have really been sick and ready to go. Ok, I'm at work. Got to move on.

  • There are 2 people in the world who disliked this video. I hope they just pressed the wrong button.

  • Bet there wasn't a dry eye at that funeral after this.

    RIP MF

    Nice montage man.

  • I cried when I heard this. It is probably one of the most prettiest version of taps I have ever heard.

  • i almost cried when i heard this. no lie.

  • i actually have the sheet music for this from the guy who wrote it. we played it for the final football game of my senior year

  • @lilboyblue92 omg could you plz email me the sheet music???

  • This sounds great! I wish i had the sheet music

  • Sad day in the music world when Maynard died. It isn't likely there will be another studio trumpet player close to Maynard's talent for many many years to come. Its true he was beaten at some things like high notes by Bergeron, but I can't think of another player that is as good all around. Nice arrangement and quite suitable for Maynard's funeral. I'm sure he was looking down smiling.

  • Outstanding! Glad I saw this.

  • the chord at :27 is chilling

  • I hope that my life is worthy of a taps like this when i die

  • these cords are so beast!!!!! maynard ferguson is telling us that in this song high notes are not the key to good trumpet players.... it is actually how the tone quality and how the trumpet player makes the trumpet sound......hes so beast!!!!!

  • WOW.

  • i cant even play youtue vids anymore !!!!!!

  • Wow.... that was amazing.

  • Amazing

  • Awesome

  • bravo

  • the world smiles, and dabs a tear away from her eye when she thinks of Maynard Furguson

  • killin!!!!

  • Yes,keep it real, cold mouthpiece, whatever , practise makes perfect, but carry on through a chipped note, its the only way,, with feeling.

  • Maynard was truly amazing. RIP.

  • @reno145 Ugh I hate playing in the cold. Mistakes make the instrument more beautiful in my opinion than perfect playing will ever do.

  • No self-respecting bugler I know would "purposefully replicate" that clam. Now it did happen that for months after the JFK funeral, buglers all around the country seemed to have inadvertantly fluffed the same note, but that's a different story.

  • I'd rather have a human play taps and make a mistake than have a bugler hold one of those bugles with a recorder inside of it and play.

  • same here..cuz REAL taps comes from your heart..not a recorder

  • I agree with you. I have been asked to join the National Buglers Association. I am going to make sure this will never happen

  • It's "Bugles Across America."

  • The people using the so-called ceremonial bugle, with an mp3 player in the bell, are not "buglers." Mostly they are soldiers or Legionnaires who have gotten stuck with the job because a real bugler was unavailable. I don't know a single person who has used the faux bugle without at least a faint amount of distaste.

  • Does anyone know who the trumpet player who played this was??? It sounds like Walter white himself

  • Walter White recorded all of the parts himself.

  • It is walter white himself, read the description

  • Taps was the last thing Maynard played on trumpet a few days before he died. I understand it was for a friend who's cat died.

  • i know he didnt. but can you imagine if you chipped a note a maynards funeral? if i did i'd throw my trumpet on the ground and proceed to smash it.

  • coz your an idiot

  • i mean... think about it! it'd suck!

  • Amazingly beautiful. i just love the music.

  • beautiful

  • i've listened 2 this video at least 7 times n a row

  • @DjCash128 ahaha i listen to it everyday. aleast 3 times a day. it makes me sad and happy.

  • @DjCash128 Wow, you must be in a puddle of tears now. I've managed to keep mine in my eyes as I'm at work.
