With the new True Grit which is not a remake, its a better adaptation of the novel. I hope a new genre of western movies starts, its like it ended after John Wayne died then in the 80's it was the hard core Rambo like action movies. With the Expendables I hope that genre's coming back, but bring back the western one too. I can't stop playing Red Dead Redemption.

The funny thing is, John Wayne didn't like the types of movies Clint was in. In fact, he wrot him a letter disapproving of High Plains Drifter. Clint played anti-heroes while Wayne wanted to be a real hero. Of course, most of Wayne's characters were assholes too, but everyone overlooked it.

@rrhynes John Wayne only ever really played one character, John Wayne. If you look at their characters deaths at the ends of their last movies, both are symbolic of a great career ended. Except John Wayne's death at the end of The Shootest is practically meaningless, he just decides to settle some unsettled scores on a personal level. Eastwood sacrifices himself at the end of Gran Tarino, (as he says to his priest) so his neighbors may know peace in the world they live in.

It's all in Wayne's face before he dies, when he see's Ron toss the gun away & turn away from the same violent life he'd lead. That's the ultimate victory of almost every western: that someone will not have to live his life by the gun.
Also: Bogart, Cary Grant, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise AND Eastwood have only ever played 1 character in their entire careers. That's limitation of being a leading man.

Have ya seen "flags of our father" kinda like that. He was a hero for it. With the new True Grit which is not a remake, its a better adaptation of the novel. I hope a new genre of western movies starts, its like it ended after John Wayne died then in the 80's it was the hard core Rambo like action movies. With the Expendables I hope that genre's coming back, but bring back the western one too. I can't stop playing Red Dead Redemption.
