Sweet. :) Don't get zapped doing it, but try inserting one end of a sheet of paper into the spark when the gap is an inch or two, to see if it will stop the spark and/or catch the paper on fire.
@maintoc I've tryed it, the arc goes through the paper and in a few seconds it catches fire. It seems to work better when the thing I'm discharging to is not grounded.
@AHW214 Interesting. Thanks for trying it & replying. I would have thought it would work better the other way, when the item you're discharging to is grounded and the spark is stronger. Oh, well. Live & learn. :p :)
I think the reason why the paper ignites more easily when it is not grounded because it produces one continues arc and while its grounded it produces many continues arcs which constantly change place. Compare the arcs in this video to tesla coil part 2 to see what i'm talking about.
