  • I hate to say it because the original is usually the best, but Ian does do better than Clive does.

  • This emperor looks like Yoda in a cloak.

  • Clive should have used that Dr Doom voice.

  • I didn't like this. In this case, having McDiarmid was a good change.

  • It was cool 20 years ago...not today.

  • Good video, but Ian Mc Diarmid IS the Emperor Palpatine

  • Preferred this Emperor's voice to Ian McDiarmid's.. and i'm not saying this because Clive Revill is a New Zealander.

  • I love Ian as Chancellor (one of the few good things about the prequels), I kind of like him in Jedi too but he is too much of a pantomime villain, but he was awful as the Emperor in Revenge Of The Sith (a bad parody of his performance in Jedi), Clive's voice and the weird mix of old lady and chimp eyes suggested a more sinister, calm spooky evil than the one we finally saw.

  • Lucas ruined Star Wars by editing this scene.

  • @HardforJesus He ruined all of Star Wars by fixing a continuity error?

  • Clive Revill just does the voice...the face is an old lady with monkey eyes superimposed over her face.

  • Great, next thing you know, there'll be making shirts that say "Clive Revill IS Emperor Palpatine".

    OH GOD!!! - SS66

  • Clive Revill is a great character actor and hilarious in comedic roles. He was especially good as KoKo in "The Mikado" (1982) and the Italian assassin in "The Assassination Bureau" (1969).

  • @SallyImpossible

Yeah, I loved him in The Mikado

  • eyes????

  • ACTUALLY to all you Revill haters he didn't play the Emperor, he merely did the voice. The person you see on screen was a WOMAN (Who no one knows who it was and has gone anonymous) with some chimpanze eyes that were made a bit bigger added in post

  • Long live the Chimpanzee Lady Emperor!

  • I like Ian's emperor better. Something about his emperor reaches a level of evil that the average actor just wouldn't be able to reach. I think it's the voice. This guy, Clive, sounds like my neighbor, relatively harmless if just a little creeply. He's a little eerie sounding, but not much more than that. I feel like Darth Vadar has more of a presence against this emperor, whereas he is clearly subordinate to Ian's emperor.

  • its revills VOICE not face its a old lady/woman with chimpanzee eyes superimposed over her

  • this was the only good change, lucas made.

  • r u kidding? this is terrible. its not the emperor.. its like a normal voice, who the hell wants that?

  • @mastercrowly this was who they had before they came out with the prequels... after that the remastered the original three and put the newer emperor in

  • @socarulz This scene, and the CGI Yoda in TPM rather than that awful puppet, were the only good changes

  • "There is a great desturbance in my face"

    "No shit sherlock"

  • Ian McDiarmid is the best Emperor

  • ian annialated him with performance, u cant believe clive is a dark lord of the sith!!!

  • What a powerful presentation; I like this over the new one by leaps and bounds.

  • I think Ian McDiarmid defined the Emperor as a character. I've always liked his performance on ROTJ but when I first saw this scene in the 2004 DVDs, I thought it was shot incorrectly, that's because of the new make-up (from ROTS) and the awful lightning.

Recently I found a fan edit of Ep. IV on DVD and some of the extra material had this scene corrected in order to get a look closer to what we originally saw in ROTJ. I'm talking off course of Adywan's ANH Revisited.

  • Ian Mcdiarmid "is" the Emperor, but Clive Revill's version would have probably bin interesting

  • Vader is probably thinking to himself "Dude, what the fuck is up with your eyes? your the damn empire and you can't get those suckers fixed"

  • oops i had mute on nevermind

  • sound ?

  • I remember reading that a woman stood in as the emperor, where Clive Reville provided the voice.

The eyes, I know for a fact, were super imposed animal eyes.

  • For some reason, the fact this isn't Ian McDiarmid creates a freaky enigma around this version of Palpatine. Nobody knew he was Darth Sidious, he had held his own against Yoda, and was the most powerful force user in the galaxy! (of his time)

  • didnt windu beat him. or did he just let that happen

  • I think if Sidious gave it 100% he would have defeated Windu. Sidious probably could have impaled him halfway through the fight (when Windu held his up his arms). However although Sidious was certainly a more powerful force user,as far as lightsabers go Windu might have been the victor.

By the time of this film Sidious may well have become more powerful. When reborn and rejuvenated after ROTJ he destroyed an entire fleet with a force storm, and dueled Luke Skywalker twice (sidious lost 2nd one).

  • nope, Sidious was a far better opponent in both lightsaber combat and force using, considering when he trained Darth Maul, Maul used his rage while Palps nearly killed him and gave little effort.

  • Dark Empire was kinda lol like that

  • "I think if Sidious gave it 100% he would have defeated Windu."

Nope. Not alone. He needed Anakin to defeat Windu, and he knew it.

  • Nope, he needed Windu there to lure Anakin.

  • Windu had him beaten quite easily. Only Anakin's intervention turned things around.

Palpatine was a master manipulator and a powerful force user, but he was certainly not Windu's equal in one-on-one combat.

  • @KaitainCPS its not that he needed anakin he used windu to finally hook anakin... if palpatine could drive offf yoda he could defeat fucking samuel l jackson

  • No. Windu was the most powerful warrior in the jedi council. His overall level was on a par with Yoda. And remember: Palpatine did not defeat Yoda; he managed, in effect, to escape from him. In a sealed environment with no chance of escape, Yoda would have defeated Sidious. And so would Windu.

  • @KaitainCPS yoda escaped from him... and he zapped windu half way across the planet so it doesnt rlly matter

  • No. Yoda escaped from what became an unwinnable SITUATION: he'd lost his lightsaber, and was at the heart of the enemy's centre of power, with thousands of troops available. Yoda had failed in his mission to kill Palpatine. If the fight had been allowed to continue to a conclusion, Yoda would have won. Palpatine was not as powerful as either Yoda or Windu.

  • @Reesecups2892 No. Lucas himself stated the Windu was able to destroy Palpatine if Anakin hadn't come between. Its also in the novel. Palpatine is strong, but no match for Windu. And Yoda had to face batallions of Clones AND Palpatine if they would have continued theyr'e battle. Anyway, Palpatine rules.

  • @KaitainCPS my bad.

  • I like the Clive Revill Emperor better.

  • Really? I don't. First off, that's not even his face, just his voice. They actually merged an old woman's face with that of a chimp. That's not an insult. That's actually what they did.

Ian McDiarmid OWNED that role and made the prequels bearable!

  • I still like the mish-mash of Revill's voice with the old woman and the chimp woman better. Much more genuinely evil than McDiarmid's over the top croaker voice.

Nothing could make the prequels bearable.

  • Actually, I gotta say; Revill's interpretation never really struck me as downright evil, even as a kid. Creepy, yes. But there was something that was almost... ponderous, maybe even a little benign about his take on the character. If Lucas kept Revill and ran with his characterization, I could almost picture the Emperor as being portrayed as more of an impartial and detached figure rather than the clear cut Overlord of all Evil that McDiarmid's Palpatine embodies.

  • McDiarmid was never impressively evil to me. He always struck me as more annoying than anything else.

  • It's well documented. You can find artciles all over the net confirming this. It was an uncredited old woman in prosthetics with chimp eyes superimposed over her own. Clive provided the voice only. Even the credits at end list him as "Voice of the Emperor".

And for the record, McDiarmid owned the role. The prequels, if nothing else, showcased how he was able to seduce and corrupt both Anakin and the Republic before revealing his true self and his iredeemably evil nature.

  • Okay, well if that's the case, it's just dumb. Why would they go to the trouble of using an old woman and superimposing a chimp's eyes over it? Especially when the result is not at all impressive. Seems to me that simply shooting Revill (with or without the prosthetics) would have been every bit as effective, if not moreso.

  • They did it "in order to create a truly unsettling image" according to Behind the Scenes stuff I've read. (Kind of like how the TIE fighter sound is a mix of an elephant call and a car driving on wet pavement)

Why not use Revill's face? Well maybe he had a good voice but not necessarily the look they wanted. In any case, they put Ian McDiardmid in for the DVD release, which is an improvement IMHO.

  • Revill just doesn't look very impressive.

  • u read read it in the wikipedia.

  • Its not. Its an old Scottish Woman with a chimp eyes which were made to look a bit more threatening in post.

    Revill merely does the voice

  • I got the 3 with the special and original editions and I always watch the original versions Ill tell you the effects arent as great as the tuned up versions but you get all the originals scenes like this and it makes the experience a million times better.

  • great scene...good to see unaltered

  • Agreed.

  • I grew up watching the original versions of the Star Wars trilogy. When I saw the SE verions I felt that Lucas butchered and ruined 3 classic flims and I felt that it was an insult to many first genertion Star Wars Fans. I was happy whaen Lucas released all 3 unaltered versions on DVD. If i were to have any more nieces, nephews, or my own children in the furture, If they want to watch The Original Trilogy I'll make sure they will be watch the unaltered versions.

  • Ian McDiarmin was better,no offense. The one here just scares me.

  • That's Ian here, actually.

  • No it isn't. This is the original version.

  • Well then, he played in the sixth.

  • Yes, Ian was in the original vesion of Ep. IV.

  • yea look at that left eye lol

  • It's weird because it's actually a chimpanzee's eye (seriously).

  • LOL! But for some reason this one freaks me a little.

  • to those who have only seen the DVD version this was the original scene. lol Though it does have that land of Oz feel looking back at it retrospectively.

  • I own all three Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi on 2-Disc DVD. I have to say that in 2006, these individual DVDs sold better than the 2004 DVD release.

  • The actor Clive revill is from New Zealand not the UK and he is still alive according to IMDB.com-I thought he should have played him again ROTJ and then us Mc Diarmud as the younger him in the sussequent prequels

  • I agree, I think Clive's voice was just better than Ian McDiarmid's, even though Ian is a fellow Scot, In my opinion, Clive gave a better performance (Voice wise).

  • Clive's a kiwi too.

  • How is this different to the first version?

  • a british actor did the voice of the emperor:clive revill. He passed away a few years ago.

  • I don't think he died....

  • whoops. I just checked imdb and you're right. sorry

  • he plays the voice of Dr.Doom in Marvel Ultimate ALlience

  • That would be nuts & call for more sequels as well!

  • I personally think he looks weirder now.

  • Of course he looks weirder now...he has a frickin' buttcrack on his forehead!

  • y does he look so weird

  • It reminds me of the Wizard hologram in The Wizard Of Oz.

  • wizard of oz LOLOLOL

  • i looked up references to other movies and thats what it was based on lol.

  • the face is that of an old woman, and the eyes apparently belong to some sort of monkey. the effect is nice, but one is surprised that they never considered that they might have to show the emperor in "real life" in a subsequent film.

  • Yes, an old woman played the emperor, and someone else voiced the Emperor.
