Edge is aight, just aight, sometimes having very little skill frees you up to come up with the most poignant if admittedly simple melodies. Then again, if you took everything the Edge ever wrote and added it all up it still wouldn't even remotely equal Johnny Marr's guitar work on a single song like William It Was Really Nothing, so skill along with taste and restraint can be good to.
I have this on VHS ! What he says about this solo....so simple...and so deep at same time, actually...It was because of this scene that I started playing the guitar !
Admitedly, I know nothing about the technical aspects of playing the guitar. I just know when I hear something I like and The Edge's guitar is something I love to hear! Listening to his guitar and to U2's music makes me happy. I don't really give a rat's ass if he's the best guitarist ever or even if he was the worst. I love the music. And if you don't, why do you come to a video on YouTube just to complain about how much you hate it? Find something else you do like instead.
If it were easy, for any guitar freak to compose like this...they'd be doing it. Come on, do it, write a U2 song that would be average had it been a true U2 song. I for one would like to hear it.
i am sick of the people that say without the delay effect, edge would be lost and that anyone could do it. well go get ur guitar and delay fx and come up with something that tops this or any other u2 song for that matter, yes, its his particular style but he's mastered it and has been an inspiration to guitarists worldwide and youtube proves that...thank u and goodnite!
@sinister066 well said..and to add what you said, for those people who think a delay does all the work for you think again as your timing has to be impeccable or the delay will trip you up. Quite a few people think skill is speed playing or slipping in a great solo, the Edge rarely plays solos and if he does it usually is quite simple eg. Sunday Bloody Sunday. A tip for all guitar fans is that it's not what you play it's the spaces between notes and what you don't play that cuts it
@Omnigriper You haven´t heard anything from Jimi Hendrix, right? Becouse if you ever listned to him you would hear that he is a "musician". there is a reason to why he is the best guitarist in the world and it´s not that he could play fast. Check out Little wing or Bold as love and you will hear that hes not just some dude who could play fast, but one of the best musician to ever walk this earth
@Omnigriper Set your facts straight, a musician is a person playing a musical instrument. And there is no difference between a musician and guitarist. If a person plays the guitar, he is a musician. If Edge is not a guitarist, then why does he play the guitar? Is he a drummer then? A bassist? And it's Gilmour, not Golmore.
this guy couldn't play the guitar with one string he is NOT good his music ISN'T good and LESS is LESS. one thing i have to give him though is how does someone get recognised as a half decent guitar player with this shit everyone calls music
@contact1araya I agree. I'm a huge U2 fan and everytime I listen to that song, I always listen right to the very end of it. It's funny how the simplest guitar parts can capture our imaginations they way they do.
J.S. Bach said, "play the music, not the instrument". The Edge "gets it". He gets music. There are many singularly gifted guitarists who whale and rip and show off.... and say "look at me". but The Edge, who could have gone that road, does not, as he sees the forest and is not distracted by the trees.
@HyLeRo no, it isnt. there was many awesome acts out in the 80s that were so much better than this piece of sh*t band. your comment just shows how much you know about music, enjoy your spoon fed bolloc*s d*ckhead!
@ShotecMusic lol i was just gona comment on that :-) he uses a type of pick that is flat on the picking edge but dotted where you would normally put ur finger and thumb. You can find lots of pick like this and basically he scrapes the dotted part over the string to get a scratchy sound. This origionally happened because when he wrote the song he didnt know how to hold a pick properly as he was self taught.
@LeeCDylan , the same for me, exactly the same things that happens every time a riff or some notes from The Edge sounds on the air..... great musicians and great feeling with his instruments.
such a beautiful song. One of my all time favorites. Loved this song since I was 13 and I am 32 years old. This song will never die, and will outlive all other love ballads out there. Thanks for posting! (yes 1:20 - 1:30 is amazing ...so simple ...yet so astonishing...I get chills listening to it.)
Edge uses a certain kind of pick that has a rough edge where you normally would hold a pick and he flips it around and uses it to "scrape" the strings and you can really hear it in this video.
@toraten1 if you mean fron 0:25, he is just playing a D Chord and adjusting the note produce by the E string. For The order goes Standard D, D with an open high e string, D with the high e at the third fret etc. He also up strokes every time ie going from the High E string up. I hope this makes sense, im not very good at puttuing thigs into words, and i dont know the technical wods or names for anything i just told you. I actually learned how to do that part by watching this video
@orangewizard Oh! Yes Yes! The Davey G too! What an oversight :( I grovel in mortification, I grovel... That was a big mistake! Steve Howe did it right too :D Gotta remember Steve Hackett and probably every Prog Rocker that came down the pike ;) and Richie Blackmore too - Yup :)

@dengladepostman But he's the one that compossed them Guitar parts, not the other best guitarists in the world, him :) And come on you're telling me you don't liked the Guitar riff to Vertigo :o It's a killer riff :D

I love The Edge because he doesn't dominate songs with the guitar like a lot of guitar players do. He's just the quiet genius in the background making a masterpiece.
@mathnu2rkewl He is actually underrated. Most people just don't like him, because he isn't a "marvelous virtuoso". Only TRUE fans of music know that's it's all about expression, my friend. Skill is second. That's why music is classified as art.
@mathnu2rkewl No, he really is overrated. I'm not saying that just because he isn't highly technical - I'm not a big fan of the likes of Vai or Malmsteen, but Edge's playing just bores me. I don't see how people can be satisfied with this kind of generic, run-of-the-mill material.
People are satisfied with it because this "generic, run off the mill material" is brilliant in its simplicity.
Sometimes an intricate, unique peice has so much going on, or it so arbitrary, that it fails to establish with the listener. It doesn't confuse the listener, and so, the listener is able to understand the music.
It like if you were reading a horribly written article, you wouldn't enjoy it. If you read something understandable, you would.
@lolYOULOSTTHEGAMElol You my freind have no soul. WHAT? May I ask....Do you Like? If the vibration and hum that comes from this man's guitar work hasn't done anything for you over the past 30 years, then you aren't able to feel emotion. The shredmaster begins and ends with EVH.(All the Malmsteen/Vai stuff is secondary) In the big scheme of things, Edge is the next big thing on the guitar hierarchy. After EVH took it to the limit.Edge created the sound of the next generation. or (Generic) sound!
@1970michplar I like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Tool, The Mars Volta, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Debussy, Miles Davis, Animal Collective, Meshuggah, Alice In Chains, Refused, Flying Lotus and Oceansize to name but a few.
The mere use of a term like "guitar hierarchy" indicates quite clearly that you have no idea what you're talking about. I might've accepted "guitar four dimensional scatterplot" and even that would've been under protest.
@deadhardy haha whatever man, the edge doesnt need to shred or anything, his licks and melodies complement U2's music perfectly, and his minimalist and stripped-back style is appreciated by those with a more mature musical outlook.
@deadhardy I know what you mean but U2 are an emo band so all the worlds lefties cream their knickers at the chance to cry a lot and look vaguely political and "caring" and right on. It lets them feel important without them having to actually know anything about what they are on about. You know: wave a lighter Hug the hippy next to them. Put on a serious expression, flash a peace sign and voila! Suddenly you are Che Guevara like mum and dad were in the 60's. Sickening but that's the way it is.
I fell in love with U2 when I was 8 years old. I had 2 reasons: Bono's voice and Edge's guitar. I have moved on in music, and truly prefer jazz over everything else. But to this day I am drawn back again and again to U2's music. The reasons are still Bono's voice and Edge's guitar. Their politics are comparabley unimportant to my ears.
So....sooo...soooo!

The Edge is a musician...NOT a guitarist.
A musician plays what is appropriate for the song.
A guitarist plays to show off their skills.
Those who dont know the difference between a musician and guitarist should not comment on music OR guitar players.
SRV = guitarist
Jimmy Hendrix = guitarist
The Edge = musician
David Golmore = musician
See the difference ?

Sometimes an intricate, unique peice has so much going on, or it so arbitrary, that it fails to establish with the listener. It doesn't confuse the listener, and so, the listener is able to understand the music.
It like if you were reading a horribly written article, you wouldn't enjoy it. If you read something understandable, you would.

@Petelecaster Something can be understandable but not enjoyable.

@deadhardy ok buddy say what you want but..... are you a better singer than bono? are you a better guitarist than the edge? I think NOT
SWAMPskate 8 months ago
@deadhardy I know what you mean but U2 are an emo band so all the worlds lefties cream their knickers at the chance to cry a lot and look vaguely political and "caring" and right on. It lets them feel important without them having to actually know anything about what they are on about. You know: wave a lighter Hug the hippy next to them. Put on a serious expression, flash a peace sign and voila! Suddenly you are Che Guevara like mum and dad were in the 60's. Sickening but that's the way it is.

@DumblyBrilliant U2 are not an emo band.

@DumblyBrilliant
