  • So....sooo...soooo!

  • keef and edge they found something. Stuff going on, send reconnasense captain...

  • Edge is aight, just aight, sometimes having very little skill frees you up to come up with the most poignant if admittedly simple melodies. Then again, if you took everything the Edge ever wrote and added it all up it still wouldn't even remotely equal Johnny Marr's guitar work on a single song like William It Was Really Nothing, so skill along with taste and restraint can be good to.

  • hahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahah!

  • The master of feedback.

    Thanks Edge.

You have made life easier for me

  • I have this on VHS ! What he says about this solo....so simple...and so deep at same time, actually...It was because of this scene that I started playing the guitar !

  • Admitedly, I know nothing about the technical aspects of playing the guitar. I just know when I hear something I like and The Edge's guitar is something I love to hear! Listening to his guitar and to U2's music makes me happy. I don't really give a rat's ass if he's the best guitarist ever or even if he was the worst. I love the music. And if you don't, why do you come to a video on YouTube just to complain about how much you hate it? Find something else you do like instead.

  • this guy knows what music is all about...

  • If it were easy, for any guitar freak to compose like this...they'd be doing it. Come on, do it, write a U2 song that would be average had it been a true U2 song. I for one would like to hear it.

  • Everytime I hear With Or Without You.. it feels like the first time.

Now that makes a good song!

  • i am sick of the people that say without the delay effect, edge would be lost and that anyone could do it. well go get ur guitar and delay fx and come up with something that tops this or any other u2 song for that matter, yes, its his particular style but he's mastered it and has been an inspiration to guitarists worldwide and youtube proves that...thank u and goodnite!

  • @sinister066 well said..and to add what you said, for those people who think a delay does all the work for you think again as your timing has to be impeccable or the delay will trip you up. Quite a few people think skill is speed playing or slipping in a great solo, the Edge rarely plays solos and if he does it usually is quite simple eg. Sunday Bloody Sunday. A tip for all guitar fans is that it's not what you play it's the spaces between notes and what you don't play that cuts it

  • very good !=)

  • This song will live for ever and ever....

  • A Billionaire, playing a Fender.

  • @pretoshohmoofc He plays Gibsons too.

  • @muymalmoon No, no, that was NOT an insult, but a complement to Fender.

  • he looks like chuck norris

  • LLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEEEEE !!! I'M A BIG FAN OF U2

  • @5d4e and The Edge is a very very very good guitarist!!

  • I love U2 and this is my favorite song :)

  • @Tuszym ME TOO!!

  • CHUCK NORRIS!

  • The Edge is a musician...NOT a guitarist.

A musician plays what is appropriate for the song.

A guitarist plays to show off their skills.

Those who dont know the difference between a musician and guitarist should not comment on music OR guitar players.

    SRV = guitarist

    Jimmy Hendrix = guitarist

    The Edge = musician

    David Golmore = musician

    See the difference ?

  • @Omnigriper toda la razon

  • @Omnigriper You haven´t heard anything from Jimi Hendrix, right? Becouse if you ever listned to him you would hear that he is a "musician". there is a reason to why he is the best guitarist in the world and it´s not that he could play fast. Check out Little wing or Bold as love and you will hear that hes not just some dude who could play fast, but one of the best musician to ever walk this earth

  • @noelhassling round of applause

  • @noelhassling -

...along with guys like "Edge" Evans!

  • @Drumrdude1973 And John Frusciante, Jonny Greenwood, Thom yorke and Ed obrian, the list of great musicans is very long

  • @noelhassling -

    ...indeed, it is...

  • @Omnigriper perfect description

  • @Omnigriper Set your facts straight, a musician is a person playing a musical instrument. And there is no difference between a musician and guitarist. If a person plays the guitar, he is a musician. If Edge is not a guitarist, then why does he play the guitar? Is he a drummer then? A bassist? And it's Gilmour, not Golmore.

  • @Omnigriper You're handicapped.

  • @Omnigriper Haha, shut up you dick 'ed! That was the biggest load of bollocks I've ever read.

  • I don't get it if you know you don't like u2 why did you click on the video just so u can leave crappy comments?

  • this guy couldn't play the guitar with one string he is NOT good his music ISN'T good and LESS is LESS. one thing i have to give him though is how does someone get recognised as a half decent guitar player with this shit everyone calls music

  • @longie28 you know the intro of with or without you? - one string!

  • @SuperCharlie183 why would i, a person with decent music taste, know the intro to thi pile of turd

  • @SuperCharlie183 why would i, a person with good taste in music, know th intro or indeed any of this pile of turd you call a song

  • @longie28 well, actually it is only played on the high e-string, but don't care about it ;) why would you watch this video, then?

  • he makes it sound so simple he also makes it sound mind bendendingly great

  • thats what makes edge so unique. less is more.

  • Yea it's amazing how often the simplest music is the most envigorating.

  • People...just becase he is famous guitar player doesn't mean that all of his songs are fucking amazing

  • @feluredhot - The Edge is a unique guitar player, that's why he became famous. He made lots of amazing songs, no one says they all are.

  • @Libertusss yea edge dares to be different.

  • @feluredhot -

    No... HE'S fuckin' amazing!

  • Nobody told me Chuck Norris knows how to jam on the guitar.

  • thats the part that makes the song so great

  • makes the hair stand up on my neck

  • never get tired of hearing those few simple chords!

  • To think I always complain about being a simple guitar player....

  • amazing song

  • He looks like Chuck Norris..

  • @scrapykoko24 Who do you think Chuck Norris really is?

  • @scrapykoko24 Chuck Norris should bow before The Edge

  • thats my favorite guitar part too...

  • @contact1araya I agree. I'm a huge U2 fan and everytime I listen to that song, I always listen right to the very end of it. It's funny how the simplest guitar parts can capture our imaginations they way they do.

  • As he said, it doesn't matter how hard or difficult is the final riff of a song, the most relevant is how is the final solo will stick in your head.

  • As he said, it doesn' matter how hard or difficult is the final riff of a song, the most relevant is how is the final solo will stick in your head.

  • J.S. Bach said, "play the music, not the instrument". The Edge "gets it". He gets music. There are many singularly gifted guitarists who whale and rip and show off.... and say "look at me". but The Edge, who could have gone that road, does not, as he sees the forest and is not distracted by the trees.

  • Can someone tell the name of this documentary pleaseee??? I MUST WATCH IT!!!!

  • i saw the whole documentary on history channel amazing !

  • oh my god why would he be in top 24 of rolling stone could some body tell me?

  • @stepinside2007 -

Perhaps your judgement of good guitar playing is impaired!

What time are you due back in BoysTown..??

  • they don't make music like this anymore

  • This song takes me to places that don't exist

  • @atrxroller

    hell?

  • @atrxroller This song takes me to the place where the streets have no name....

  • What's he playing with? Is that some kind of rehearsal recording?

  • "our videos are so different, so like from some other place" pretentious w*nkers, i f*cking hate this band

  • @heroindog wahh wahh, this is one of the few videos of the 80s with lasting value, unlike the other cheesy acts that were out at the moment

  • @HyLeRo no, it isnt. there was many awesome acts out in the 80s that were so much better than this piece of sh*t band. your comment just shows how much you know about music, enjoy your spoon fed bolloc*s d*ckhead!

  • @heroindog boo, go enjoy your arcade fire then

  • @HyLeRo i will, because its actually good.

  • @heroindog Why are you watching this video then?

  • @fletchers4 because its funny to see how much this band takes themselves so seriously, when they suck!

  • I have that same guitar!!!

  • Doesn't just The Edge plays with the edge of guitar pick to get that scratchy sound?

  • @ShotecMusic lol i was just gona comment on that :-) he uses a type of pick that is flat on the picking edge but dotted where you would normally put ur finger and thumb. You can find lots of pick like this and basically he scrapes the dotted part over the string to get a scratchy sound. This origionally happened because when he wrote the song he didnt know how to hold a pick properly as he was self taught.

  • @jwalsh8 When I play my pick is just turning around 'cos I'm self taught too. So I got the same thing from time to time.

  • Sounds sooooo nice!!!!

  • Edge always said 'notes are expensive, use them wisely'......he didn't use many here, but the ones he did hold so much value.....

  • Incredible song, gives me chills. You could call it a "simple" riff but it evokes a lot of emotion, and that's what good music does!

  • @LeeCDylan , the same for me, exactly the same things that happens every time a riff or some notes from The Edge sounds on the air..... great musicians and great feeling with his instruments.

Thanks Edge for all of this.

    Tatonilo, from Italy!

  • less is more!

  • he looks like chuck

  • i share my birthday. im only 35 years younger, but im proud of it.

  • I WANNA LEARN THAT GUITAR PART?

  • such a beautiful song. One of my all time favorites. Loved this song since I was 13 and I am 32 years old. This song will never die, and will outlive all other love ballads out there. Thanks for posting! (yes 1:20 - 1:30 is amazing ...so simple ...yet so astonishing...I get chills listening to it.)

  • @QuickAimGame i think a 73 stratocaster

  • people who hate this are twats who could not play a guitar. if it came out there arse

  • best song ever made, yeah well shine like stars in the winter time!

  • yeah sencilla pero emotiva

  • Edge uses a certain kind of pick that has a rough edge where you normally would hold a pick and he flips it around and uses it to "scrape" the strings and you can really hear it in this video.

  • I have the same guitar.....!!!! And as far as U2 being emo....lol..may as well call them a rap band. LMAO......

  • how does he play that from from the 25 mark, anyone help?

  • @toraten1 if you mean fron 0:25, he is just playing a D Chord and adjusting the note produce by the E string. For The order goes Standard D, D with an open high e string, D with the high e at the third fret etc. He also up strokes every time ie going from the High E string up. I hope this makes sense, im not very good at puttuing thigs into words, and i dont know the technical wods or names for anything i just told you. I actually learned how to do that part by watching this video

  • @tommyburruss yeah thats it man. The chord names are D, Dsus2 (open E string), and Dsus4 (E string 3rd fret).

  • This man is a genius

  • The edge to cool. :)

  • Pure magician. <3

  • Edge and Alex Lifeson have allot in common with their use of delays. Love that sound.

  • @badback22 ....and David Gilmour!

  • @orangewizard Oh! Yes Yes! The Davey G too! What an oversight :( I grovel in mortification, I grovel... That was a big mistake! Steve Howe did it right too :D Gotta remember Steve Hackett and probably every Prog Rocker that came down the pike ;) and Richie Blackmore too - Yup :)

  • @orangewizard Yes! BIG My OOOOPS - Dave taught them both hey!!! Saaahrrryyyy Dave! :D

  • Thank you Dave;

You changed my life with your music.

    Bobby....

  • @cowtownisbetter on the wall in the background, next to edge...

  • i really wanna know the story behind that ''U2'' shaped guitar in the backround

  • Everybody can play what he plays, nothing interesting, and i you cant play what he plays then you suck and should get a new hobby and disslike this comment

  • @dengladepostman But he's the one that compossed them Guitar parts, not the other best guitarists in the world, him :) And come on you're telling me you don't liked the Guitar riff to Vertigo :o It's a killer riff :D

  • @dengladepostman I look forward to seeing your band at Glastonbury on JUne 24th

  • its all about serving the song not your ego

  • its not about how hard the guitar is played..

its about how beautiful it sounds.

  • Ohh that magical, epic, beautiful guitar riff.. who says there's no cure for many diseases?

  • I think it's the greatest outro to a song ever. It really makes the song that extra bit special!

  • 21 humans who wished they could play like the Edge. Actually, 22, as I do too!

    Thanks Dave.......

    Bobby......

  • 1:35 is so easy you try hitting all the right strings

  • Music isn't about how fast he shreds. It's about the sound he makes.

  • @eflows Thats it!!

  • I remember seeing this documentry, I think Bono or Edge said that With Or Without You is an odd song because it didn't said like an 80's song and the reason that it does fit there is because we've heard it so many times. I for one think it's one of the best U2 songs & their old stuff makes them stand out in the 80's, in a good way :)

  • WOW!!! MY FAVOURITE TOO EDGE! <3 U2 ROCK!! :) THE BEST GUITARIST IN THE WORLD!! <3

  • Out of the blue I just paused at 00:00 only to notice ....

    HOW KOOL IS ADAM CLAYTON

I love you Adam for being the silent brilliance yet so powerful with your bass only to add blessing to an already blessed Larry, Bono & Edge

U2 = SHEER MAGNIFICENCE IN EVERY ERA AND DECADE

  • i love u2

  • I love The Edge because he doesn't dominate songs with the guitar like a lot of guitar players do. He's just the quiet genius in the background making a masterpiece.

  • For a second I was like, why is chuck norris playing a strat? Then I was like, Oh. That's the Edge.

  • The opposite of in your face guitar playing....

  • Every time I come to youtube,

    I always end up here.

    Thanks Edge.

    Bobby...

  • very powerful song love it!

  • Wish The Edge could be my guitar teacher....

  • you 20 folk who flag this? why? waste of time.....

  • He has some pick scratches in his finish there ha ha

  • wat a legend!!!!

  • Everytime I come to you tube, I end up here again.

KJ, I can't live, with or without you!

    Bobby...

  • @deadhardy Awww... someone doesn't know what they are talking about.

  • @mathnu2rkewl Or, someone who has their own opinion.

  • @mathnu2rkewl He is actually underrated. Most people just don't like him, because he isn't a "marvelous virtuoso". Only TRUE fans of music know that's it's all about expression, my friend. Skill is second. That's why music is classified as art.

  • @mathnu2rkewl But he is overrated? i aint saying that he's bad, but he IS overrated

  • @mathnu2rkewl No, he really is overrated. I'm not saying that just because he isn't highly technical - I'm not a big fan of the likes of Vai or Malmsteen, but Edge's playing just bores me. I don't see how people can be satisfied with this kind of generic, run-of-the-mill material.

  • @lolYOULOSTTHEGAMElol @lolYOULOSTTHEGAMElol

People are satisfied with it because this "generic, run off the mill material" is brilliant in its simplicity.

Sometimes an intricate, unique peice has so much going on, or it so arbitrary, that it fails to establish with the listener. It doesn't confuse the listener, and so, the listener is able to understand the music.

It like if you were reading a horribly written article, you wouldn't enjoy it. If you read something understandable, you would.

  • @Petelecaster Something can be understandable but not enjoyable.

  • @lolYOULOSTTHEGAMElol You my freind have no soul. WHAT? May I ask....Do you Like? If the vibration and hum that comes from this man's guitar work hasn't done anything for you over the past 30 years, then you aren't able to feel emotion. The shredmaster begins and ends with EVH.(All the Malmsteen/Vai stuff is secondary) In the big scheme of things, Edge is the next big thing on the guitar hierarchy. After EVH took it to the limit.Edge created the sound of the next generation. or (Generic) sound!

  • @1970michplar I like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Tool, The Mars Volta, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Debussy, Miles Davis, Animal Collective, Meshuggah, Alice In Chains, Refused, Flying Lotus and Oceansize to name but a few.

The mere use of a term like "guitar hierarchy" indicates quite clearly that you have no idea what you're talking about. I might've accepted "guitar four dimensional scatterplot" and even that would've been under protest.

  • @lolYOULOSTTHEGAMElol Miles Davis listened to u2 on his deathbed...he could hear the genius in Edge's guitar

  • @76niro Yes, I understand his last words were "yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah ye-"

  • @lolYOULOSTTHEGAMElol Yeah...nice one...thats like discrediting pink floyd for the words Oooooooo ooo ooo ooo ooooh in good bye blue sky

  • @76niro Methinks you missed the joke.

  • @lolYOULOSTTHEGAMElol I get the joke...listening to u2 is what killed him

  • @76niro Never mind.

  • @lolYOULOSTTHEGAMElol You're an arrogant little dipshit. Just fuck this video, you're disgracing with you arrogance

  • @Dano94910 "fuck this video"? I couldn't agree more - thanks for your input, friend!

  • Comment removed

  • @mathnu2rkewl hahaha best comment ever!

  • @deadhardy haha whatever man, the edge doesnt need to shred or anything, his licks and melodies complement U2's music perfectly, and his minimalist and stripped-back style is appreciated by those with a more mature musical outlook.

  • @deadhardy as long as u are on youtube watching u2...great!

  • @deadhardy wooow , youre great

i love these types of people who watch things they hate and post negative comments :) goodbye my friend

  • @deadhardy what the fuck are you talking about?

If you dont like The Edge and U2 dont listen to them. You dont have to comment negatively.

And If you want to know; U2 IS THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD!

  • @MegaBassPlayer97Gr I like U2 but erm... they r the second biggest band in the world (best comes down to opinion so i'll use biggest)

  • @crazymarvel who is the first biggest/.??

  • @deadhardy drunk much ?

  • @deadhardy FUCK YOU , COME AND I'LL KILL YOU JUST LIKE EVERYONE WANTS TO DO THAT!

  • @deadhardy youre so stupid and you are noty a musician you stupid fuck

  • @deadhardy then why are you searching videos about The Edge?

  • @deadhardy ok buddy say what you want but..... are you a better singer than bono? are you a better guitarist than the edge? I think NOT

  • @deadhardy I know what you mean but U2 are an emo band so all the worlds lefties cream their knickers at the chance to cry a lot and look vaguely political and "caring" and right on. It lets them feel important without them having to actually know anything about what they are on about. You know: wave a lighter Hug the hippy next to them. Put on a serious expression, flash a peace sign and voila! Suddenly you are Che Guevara like mum and dad were in the 60's. Sickening but that's the way it is.

  • @DumblyBrilliant U2 are not an emo band.

  • @DumblyBrilliant

I fell in love with U2 when I was 8 years old. I had 2 reasons: Bono's voice and Edge's guitar. I have moved on in music, and truly prefer jazz over everything else. But to this day I am drawn back again and again to U2's music. The reasons are still Bono's voice and Edge's guitar. Their politics are comparabley unimportant to my ears.

  • @deadhardy edge is a fucking wizard with that six string. and you sir are a fucking idiot

  • @deadhardy

    go fuck biebers pussy

  • Simply amazing. What a beautiful song.

    <---- Check us out too!

  • Why the hell isnt he wearing a beanie?
