@zabuzato I sure wish they were available somewhere-I'd buy another for $1000 if I had to. They are incredibly so not found anywhere. The Little Jake is the closest to the FRAP that's out there.
Very nice job - 30 years ago for my senior recital I played what I figured at the time was the world's first electric bassoon quintet, playing live with a Barcus Berry pickup, an analog delay and a few other effects, perhaps a phase shifter pedal and/or flanger, and a 4-track tape of myself. Your technique and equipment both outdo me. Extremely impressive.
U ROX, i see the video with u in bela fleck, thats is awesome, and u solos , OMG, people like u made the old instruments never die, doing new things with them, sorry for my bad english , im from Chile, i like if u come :D
Hello mister Paul Hanson! I'm a bassoonist too) You're a great Musician! ;) I'm watching your video & music for a long time! "Emerald Isle" & "Subtle Demons" is something Incredible!
Truly inspiring, bringing an acoustic orchestral instrument into the world of jazz and music technology. As a Berklee student and woodwind player this is to me what music should be all about, blending things the least likely to be found together in artistic and virtuosic ways. Thanks very much for this amazing performance!
@AteamMedia no but you have to have a high quality pick up microphone. This is a FRAP (Flat Response Audio Pickup) made by Arnie Lazarus that is completely obsolete. Trent Jacobs makes a good mic called the Little Jake-google Forrests Music and you can find it there on their website.
@jazzbassoonpaul oh okay, the other pictures made it look like you had to drill a hole in the back of the bocal.. im assuming this pickup just goes where the whisper key covers up? I dont think the school would appreciate me experimenting on their bocal lol. also thank you for the response, I appreciate the help
Man, this is amazing. I love the tones you can get from a Bassoon. Have never played, and haven't really heard much of them until about a year ago. I've been quite inspired by these videos. You're a great player which makes me want one. I'm sure years of practice will ensue to get this good, and often than not, people won't. You're amazing dude. Keep it up.
Could you suggest a bassoon that is of student quality. They're not cheap and not easy to play. That I know.
I've discovered you quite recently and when I heard you in Flecktones's Scratch and Sniff for the first time, I have to say that I instantly fell in love with your playing, despite the fact that I have always prefered string instruments. You simply rock!!! Looking forward to hear more! (Sorry about the grammatics.)
@okayiam thanks! now that I'm back from Japan I'll be doing more jazz and fusion-oriented playing. I can't list my website but it has a lot to do with my full name and music.
At 1:50, any suggestions on how I could get that sorta, split tone thing you have going on? Sounds great. Everytime I listen to it, makes me proud I play bassoon.
@easthockey13 That moment at 1:50 is kind of like a David Sanborn saxophone split high note. I just open up my embouchure to get that multiphonic. One of the reasons I love the bassoon is for the multiphonics and how much they sound like electric guitar feedback.
I love you. How do I get anything to this effect.....electric bassoon...my mind has been blown. This is officially the most awesome thing I have ever heard in my life.
@MrWuzzo Go to the Forrests Music website and go to the "electronic recorders, mics" section. Damn YouTube won't let me post the link. Look for the Little Jake made by Trent Jacobs.
Hey Paul, fantastic playing and chops! What is the effect that gives you that thickend line/close harmony within keys in your intro and outro? It sounds beautiful on a bassoon and works really well!
@captinJerk That was my Digitech Studio Vocalist from the mid-90s. Since I've been over in Tokyo since mid-2008-that unit has died and I don't do multi-voice harmonies. I sure miss that unit. There are other units like the TC Helicon and the Voice Prizm that do similar things but they don't allow for custom harmonization. I really miss being able to chromatically harmonize the chromatic scale 25 different completely independent ways.
@captinJerk The thing nowadays is that the harmonizers are trying to be smart and figure out what you want INSTEAD of allowing you to program what you want harmonically yourself. The market is really for vocalists who want simple background vocals-so-they have units that you sing through and play guitar through and the unit figures out what you want based on 'normal' harmonic rules. I do it completely custom for each and every note of the chromatic scale-not popular now apparently.
@jazzbassoonpaul thx for the reply, ive figured it out myself in the meantime what you were using. That unit is great! I bet it would work beautifully on the bass...The market is of course orienting itsself around "plug&play" shit because you need knowledge to set the unit otherwise, becoming useless for the mass. You should get a new one trough ebay, the stuff you did with it is really something special.
Paul? ...same PH that I heard on Apfelbaum's album a few years back? that is one of my 5 CD's to have if marooned on the proverbial desert island. the bassoon gave it a cool sort of edge...really nice. What have you been up to since? Any solo albums?
@knellonetellone2 Oh god-I've been up to a whole lot. Apfelbaum's album's you heard me on are about 20 years old now. I'll send you my website-you'll find out all the sordid details there about my work with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Cirque Du Soleil and a whole lot of other people. I'm living and performing in Tokyo these days with Cirque 380 shows a year. I have about 5 solo albums out (FROLIC IN THE LAND OF PLENTY, VOODOO SUITE)...
This definitely makes me want to try out electric bassoon, just worried about the transition from classical training to improv and memorization like this
@cramdizzl The transition is a valid concern. I am a classically trained bassoonist who studied under Stephen Paulson (SF Conservatory) but I never wanted to make it in an orchestra. I have HUGE respect for people like Sol Schoenbach, Norman Herzberg, Steven Maxym, Maurice Allard and younger players like Gustavo Nunez and Dag Jensen. They are incredible classical bassoonists. I just wanted to go another direction. Improvisation can only widen your horizons-just remember your classical roots.
@cramdizzl Sol Schoenbach and other old-school bassoonists probably did improvise-there are other major symphonic first chair players that have done so (Mark Eubanks for one). The training for bassoon is designed to get an orchestral position. Improvisation-while a valid musical choice-is considered a distraction on an instrument that requires such focus to do your 'job'. I can understand that-but there are more and more improvising bassoon players that are great classical players these days.
@cramdizzl Anything's possible if you really want to accomplish it. I would say that certain music (Brazilian jazz, funk) lend itself to the bassoon better than other improvisational styles (bebop)-that's just my opinion as I'm also a saxophone player.
Great stuff, Paul! I'm a reed player, and can honestly say I have never heard anyone with better command of the instrument than you. I've always loved bassoon, and now this. Who needs a sax when you can rock out the bassoon like this? :-)
@RossiniSoprano well thank you! Please-saxophone will always be around, I play it also and trust me-it is much easier for playing many notes. Tonewise-I always love the bassoon-and I love the range and the feel of it-that's why I play-not to compete with any other instrument or anyone. I just do the best I can and hope to continue to do better.
Bela Fleck really knows how to pick em. This is the most creativity I have ever heard out of a bassoonist. I am so sorry I missed there last concert in Detroit. I did not even know who Bela Fleck was. I traveled 500 miles to see Chick Corea and Bela. Can you imagine; Chick playing bluegrass? I was stunned. Just complete and utter masters of their craft!!

Thanks so much for sharing your AMAZING Talent with the world! Makes me want to brush up on the very little bassoon I learned in my double reed class in college!!!
Badass! I've been curious about you since I saw your trio recording for sale at abstractlogix with Sipe and Hellborg-now I'll have to start buying everything you have for sale! Thanks for posting-I'll definitely be sharing this one!
I keep coming back to your stuff, your fantastic and so easy to listen to. Its the cleanist bassoon improve I have ever heard, awsome technique, yet so expressive. I had to say something- Steve
What happened to the bongo thing? That was really good too.
Here I'm using a Digitech Studio Vocalist with a MIDI buddy pedal for switching harmonizations-that and an Adrenalinn 2 pedal (made by Roger Linn, inventor of the Linn drum)-that and a Boss Super Shifter for the high octave-and a Line6 Delay modeler pedal.
paul, great video. Someone directed me to your video because I have a similar (but MUCH less incredible) video with sax looping and effects. I just realized that even though I wasn't aware you were doing this, you had a huge indirect influence on me arriving at a similar conclusion after I heard you with the Flecktones when I was a teenager. So I'd just like to say thanks!
Oh, one more thing..... I am definitely going to buy an album for me and my dad. He was always funny about the bassoon as being an arcane instrument. I know that it is very difficult, so it makes it all that much more cool to hear it being used like you are using it. When you aren't in Tokyo, where is home base? Maybe I could bring him to hear you live sometime. Take care and keep that jammin alive!
I play regular bassoon too. Some tips are mainly practice the high notes because they are a BITCH and the lows are easy. DO NOT PINCH! That's very bad if you do that. Also, cut the corners of your reed SLIGHTLY so they won't get caught on anything.
Long tones, get your air and chops strong. Practice with a metronome. Do lots of scales and patterns in addition to playing in bands and orchestras. Always do a bit more than is required-that way you always get better.
Thanks very much. That means a lot-especially at this time.
I'm feeling down because I play electric bassoon with a Cirque Du Soleil show called ZED in Tokyo, Japan-and I might not be able to come home this year due to the paranoia about the swine flu. Sometimes it's not easy being me-thanks for your kind words though! makes me realize I'm appreciated.
Thanks very much! I would love to but for now I'm here in Toyko playing in Cirque Du Soleil's ZED. Check it out on the web. Maybe there's a slight chance in 2012 I'll be in London but that's a very slight chance. Thanks again!
Cirque Du Soleil is a great show - sure it will be a wonderful experience. Been listening to your album 'Frolic' for a few weeks now and there's something in each listen that makes me laugh out loud - mindblowing... er ... blowing... You'd be very welcome in London if you decide to make the trip over!
Hi!... well i posted my video i hope you like it!... is an improvisation or Jam... Maked down here in Perú...im from Venezuela but im living now in Peru... make a suggestion. i'll be grateful. Thanks!
hey man that is freakn cool - I'm a bassoonist 2 and always have been keen on this sort of thing. I taped a mic connected to a BOSS ME 50 - wah wah is the bomb. Is that basically wat you've done here?
A bassoonist friend showed this to me and I, being a typical saxophonist, was quite skeptical. HOWEVER, this completely blew me away! I've NEVER seen anyone play bassoon like that. Truly original and very, very virtuosic.
Yes, a little. If I want a more classical sound I want a slightly longer reed to give me that classic 'pungent' bassoon sound. And I use my silver Leitzinger bocal. For 'jazz' or improv styles-I use a reed that's a bit shorter for hitting high notes with less strain. And I use a gold-plated Leitzinger bocal. That is what works for me but sometimes I get a reed that does everything well. That's the best!
Thanks Barry! You are too-I've enjoyed the Brecker Bros video in Japan with you and Dennis and the band back in the early 90's. Thanks so much for the hookup with Tom-it's been really fun playing music I couldn't do at Cirque! -best-Paul
hey speedfist-I was in Canada up to May-then I moved here to Tokyo doing electric bassoon with Cirque Du Soleil in a new show called ZED. Not coming to North America for a long time I'm afraid.
Gorgeous. I can't bring myself to put a barcus-berry pickup in my good Heckel CC-1 for fear of ruining it. I totally admire the risk taken to accomplish this task.
dude holy shit ur rly paul hanson! ive always wanted to be in contact with a Flecktone! plz respond u guys are my idols! i play jazz trumpet and guitar
you are way too cool..fantastic..do you have a cd of more of the same (beat) as well more funky jazz with slap guitar, other instruments? I listen to this all the time and send it on.

@zabuzato it fits on the bocal-if you see my bocal I have a FRAP pickup attached to it near the whisper key hole.
Same place for the Little Jake.
jazzbassoonpaul 7 months ago
@jazzbassoonpaul I wish i had a FRAP. They are discontinued right ? Is it still some people selling them as 3rd party ?

where can i find this microphone ?
zabuzato 8 months ago
@zabuzato Great question. You can't find the FRAP wind instrument pickup anywhere-it is an obsolete pickup.
I have two and that's it. Google Trent Jacobs Little Jake and you will find the next best thing for bassoon.

I want to see a video of you playing with the circus, on your circus costume of course :-) c'mon !!!!

All i play is regular bassoon do you have any tips?
happymoego 2 years ago
I play regular bassoon too. Some tips are mainly practice the high notes because they are a BITCH and the lows are easy. DO NOT PINCH! That's very bad if you do that. Also, cut the corners of your reed SLIGHTLY so they won't get caught on anything.

Long tones, get your air and chops strong. Practice with a metronome. Do lots of scales and patterns in addition to playing in bands and orchestras. Always do a bit more than is required-that way you always get better.

i aspire to be you. lol :) you're amazing!

Came across this video by accident......wow.....you are truly gifted and a true source of inspiration.

I saw Paul with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. All I can say is Paul fit right in.
And that says it all.

Thanks very much! I would love to but for now I'm here in Toyko playing in Cirque Du Soleil's ZED. Check it out on the web. Maybe there's a slight chance in 2012 I'll be in London but that's a very slight chance. Thanks again!
jazzbassoonpaul 2 years ago
Cirque Du Soleil is a great show - sure it will be a wonderful experience. Been listening to your album 'Frolic' for a few weeks now and there's something in each listen that makes me laugh out loud - mindblowing... er ... blowing... You'd be very welcome in London if you decide to make the trip over!

hey man that is freakn cool - I'm a bassoonist 2 and always have been keen on this sort of thing. I taped a mic connected to a BOSS ME 50 - wah wah is the bomb. Is that basically wat you've done here?
setlips 3 years ago
no, no, no, no, no. Go to my Electric Bassoon setup video and you'll see how I do this. No mic "taped" to the horn. Thanks for the kind words!
jazzbassoonpaul 3 years ago
A bassoonist friend showed this to me and I, being a typical saxophonist, was quite skeptical. HOWEVER, this completely blew me away! I've NEVER seen anyone play bassoon like that. Truly original and very, very virtuosic.
calvindugan 3 years ago
I saw you play with the flecktones years ago in San Francisco. One of the most memorable shows I've been to.

my music teacher is getting me reeds that i don't have to soak. could i do jazz bassoon on those too?
xoJ3Nxo 3 years ago
That has nothing at all to do with it-you have to soak reeds!! Don't waste your time thinking that you don't need to soak.
It's about practice and listening.

hah dude this is kick ass!!! i wanna do that with my bassoon!!!!!
bandgeekbassoon09 3 years ago
hey paul.
do you do anything differently between classical and jazz, reed-wise?
inflatableparrot742 3 years ago
Yes, a little. If I want a more classical sound I want a slightly longer reed to give me that classic 'pungent' bassoon sound. And I use my silver Leitzinger bocal. For 'jazz' or improv styles-I use a reed that's a bit shorter for hitting high notes with less strain. And I use a gold-plated Leitzinger bocal. That is what works for me but sometimes I get a reed that does everything well. That's the best!
jazzbassoonpaul 3 years ago
Thanks Barry! You are too-I've enjoyed the Brecker Bros video in Japan with you and Dennis and the band back in the early 90's. Thanks so much for the hookup with Tom-it's been really fun playing music I couldn't do at Cirque! -best-Paul

Hi Paul, I freaking love your style. I never had a favourite bassoonist until now.
Are you playing in canada any time soon ?
I am a bass player, and if I could play bass like anyone, it would be how you play the bassoon
speedfist 3 years ago
hey speedfist-I was in Canada up to May-then I moved here to Tokyo doing electric bassoon with Cirque Du Soleil in a new show called ZED. Not coming to North America for a long time I'm afraid.

I am doing everything right there. Go to my other videos and there is one about my electric setup that will answer your questions. Thanks!
jazzbassoonpaul 3 years ago
wow
forgiveness if this's already been asked, but are you harmonizing in realtime at the beginning, and if so, how?
and what gear are you using?
iambothsides 3 years ago
Gorgeous. I can't bring myself to put a barcus-berry pickup in my good Heckel CC-1 for fear of ruining it. I totally admire the risk taken to accomplish this task.
