Are your garters pets or wild? If they're pets it's probably better they don't eat the garden caught toads as they could contain parasites and diseases.
when i was in first grade i had a garter snake for 6 months then i let it go in my backyard . this year im in 8th grade i found the same snake. i knew it was mine cause mine my snake had a scar over its left eye.

Checkered pattern, NOT a checkered garter. A lot of garter species have checkered patterns. I'm pretty sure that's an eastern garter.
