  • Thats music !

  • Very Happy Birthday wishes to you, Mr. Brendel. Thanks so much!

  • happy birthday maestro!

  • i like how hes really good at piano

  • A touch lighter than Horowitz and it makes all the difference.

  • Oh my god. I can't express this at all. I'm melting in Schubert :)

  • 46 people are in denial

  • really need this in HD!

  • So this is what love sounds like?

  • This is so very beautiful

  • awesome !!!

  • its like a voice is even heard at 4:40 singing simple melody

  • @myiotube hey ! i think you could hear that voice in the whole piece...

  • @FranckFromFrance in most part, yes ! i guess i first woke to it around that time ! fantastic !

  • I have never seen this amazing pianist before, but I reckon he must be a real master in his field.

  • Magical!

  • How wonderful!

  • @fredjmp

    Thank you My Darling Fred.

  • ALFREEEEEEEEEED ! the real deal!

  • Much cyber applause here. Exquisite. What a great artist!!

  • Where is the "Love" voting button?

  • @andyfinch13 You sir, haven't got any clue of Brendel and how he made Schubert the man he is for us right now in Austria. I wonder which version you heard, that you think, this is how it's not meant to be played... You seem to probably not even have the sense for such music, or a complete different access to this kind of music :o

  • @andyfinch13 Your exaggerated and uncalled for comments merely reveal to the world that you are ignorant.

  • Wonderful work of art.

  • The dynamics are so precise and beautiful.

  • muy pero muy hermoso e inspirador =)

  • So many wonderful renditions of this impromptu on Youtube, but this one is my favorite.

  • Man he shits all over Zimerman on this one, doesn't he haha

  • CRIME: MY parents didnt introduce me to music....

  • @makkakman At least your parents didnt use musical education as an excuse to be cruel to you.

  • my dream: compose a piano music just for me ... too much beautiful to be public.. a genius this shubert beethoven mozart

  • WHATS THE PIANO is it Steinway

  • This is beautiful.

  • Just thank you, for posting, it is sublime.

  • without words

  • My absolute favorite rendition. Brendel is such a pimp.

  • I enjoyed listening to Zimerman playing this...but you know what ? OH WOW, Brendel really nailed it! That was just beautiful...specially looking at his face...you can tell he knows this piece by heart and enjoys playing it so much....great vid!

  • brendel is schubert's reincarnation in this video...amazing stuff!

  • Is this Seymour Lipkin?

  • I am an amateur and don't know exactly how he effects this, but it seems to me he has the double dynamic range even without using pppp and ffff.

  • It's equality in his fingering weight that makes his playing sound so clear. None of this loud on the index, weak on the 3rd finger, loud on the 4th finger. He plays very clearly because of it. Of course his dynamic choices are excellent as well. I was listening to him play a chromatic scale. It was beautiful. It was played with perfectly even rhythm and dynamics. The abc's of piano shows up at concert level too. I also like the ring to his notes. Beautiful articulation execution.

  • @robertslistening Wow man, you are right on. You understand. I would have thumbs upped your comment, but Google has censored me. They have disabled my ability to thumbs up or thumbs down a comment.

  • Really really divine and I mean literally. Touch by an angel

  • The speaker maker B&W put this video on their promotion DVD. The performance and the sound are just amazing. I have one pair of B&Ws, I can listen to this for two hours without stop. I can feel it touching my soul.....

  • Franz Peter Schubert (German pronunciation: [ˈfʁants ˈʃuːbɛɐ̯t]; January 31, 1797 – November 19, 1828) was an Austrian composer.

Although he died at an early age, Schubert was tremendously prolific. He wrote some 600 Lieder, nine symphonies (including the famous "Unfinished Symphony"), liturgical music, operas, some incidental music, and a large body of chamber and solo piano music. . (From Wikipedia)

  • he is so in tune with every note and feeling

  • i wish y could play the piano like alfred

thanks so much for the videos

  • I wish I could play the piano like this guy.

  • Omg how

  • I am going to a concert in september ! ;D

  • Brendel' s interpretation is the best

  • This is GMC Professional Grade!

  • What grade is this?

  • wups this is brendal. i meant zimerman and horowitz

  • nulla di più bello!!! solo lui !!!!

  • What a rendition! Splendid.

  • 42 out of 1870 people have a permanently damaged hearing. That, or Schubert discovered that button 42 times...

  • I don't think I've ever heard a piano being played like this before... ever.

  • Horowitz plays this to perfection as well.

  • Absolutely awesome.

  • @hein2214 Dein comment tut weh.

  • When Brendal Closes his Eyes and Plays this I Wonder what he Sees....

  • Interesting how playing this simply and without sentimentality can evoke a stronger reaction than when it's played molto espressivo. Probably closer to Schubert's original vision than many other fine versions out there.

  • I was transfixed by the interpretation, had to listen repeatedly to take more of it in..tears came to my eyes thinking of Schubert's short life and what we all missed by his premature passing. The quality of the playing and of the video are great beyond mere description!

  • 42 people wouldn't know a true masterpiece if it came up to them said hello and punched them in the face

  • My tears came out at the first tone.

  • There's something else I just noticed about Brendel's playing. That tempo is beautiful. It's so contemplative. I think he plays this best, that I have heard, between...Zimmerman, Perahia, Lipatti, Rubenstein and others. Those dynamics also speak poetic. Lipatti was my 2nd favorite. Just my opinions.

  • The emotion behind his expression starting at 1:36 gives me chills.

  • This piece is an absolute masterpiece, one of the most beautiful piano pieces ever written

  • This man could kill me with his fingers -.-

  • One of the best!

  • I really don't know what to think of the 42 people who clicked dislike on this video...

Brendals playing still over-powers my amazement at your lack of judgement and apprecciation.

    This, is absolute solitude.

  • I cant see any possible way how you can NOT like this! So awesome!

  • thank you!!

  • If I may just add Radu Lupu in this company...

  • Comment removed

  • 42 people are severely ear-injured

  • @davlak2 Or maybe they were raped to this piece... who knows?

  • @davlak2 44 right now...hahaha

  • Such focus. It's almost as if he mentally climbs inside the music to explore and enjoy every note.

  • This Impromptu in G-flat Major is Alfred Brendel's signature piece, and understandably so. He is the finest living interpreter of the piano music of Franz Schubert, and this is one of Schubert's most melodically moving works. The combination of this artist and this composer is unsurpassable!

  • absolutely gorgeous :)

this piece is one of my favorite pieces by Schubert, and Alfred Brendel plays it like it should be played

  • Really, what an amazing sound and approach he give in here, surpassing all other rivals (horowitz et al)

  • I'm currently learning this piece. But mine is "Impromptu Op. 90 No. 3 Schubert Arranged by GALYA" It is the easy version of this, but I'm only 13 so it seems only fair. haha.

  • I love Schubert. Now I love Brendel, too.

This is superb. So utterly beautiful.

  • I always feel my tears coming out while listening to this music and Brendel, only your playing can make me feel like that.

  • I can play this.... at about 2/3 the tempo.

  • Yes, yes, yes! Lovely, relaxing, dream-like; one could drift off into all sorts of imaginations.

  • BRENDEL & SCHUBERT ... need I say more?

    ☆☆☆☆☆

  • so nicee omg

  • THE DESCRIPTION SAYS IT ALL.... :)

  • the secret to every genius is subtlety, and brendel has mastered this art to perfection. the nuances in his music can only be appreciated the more you listen to him. he doesn't need any performance or theatrics, just him, the piano, and those wonderful, wonderful hands. someone please knight this man.

  • god

    beautiful

  • Excellent!

  • only brendel for this Impromptu...amazing.

  • BRAVOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  • I love the slight use of rubato at the end of the phrases, and the slight pauses before some of the high notes, its makes the song so much more dramatic, yet beautiful.

  • This is one of the most beautiful interpretations of any piece I have ever heard in my life. I seriously need to learn this piece now.

  • i have no musical education, but i prefer brendell among all the pianist. maybe as says watutman because his strong left hand

  • Beautiful, but a bit too pathetic. I prefer Gieseking

  • @MrPakired really?..I listened to his version. A bit too fast and lacking finesse for my liking, but that is why there are different pianists for different people.

  • @kbaan I agree with you!

  • @kbaan I agree with you!...what do you think about Richter's or Sofronitsky's versions?

  • mr brandel...bagusss....lah

  • Mon cœur en est transporter...

  • Linda! Incrível! Maravilhosa!!!

  • There are those rare beings who do precisely what they were born to do. Their journey through this life is a gift to humanity, and in this we have both Brendel and Schubert.

It is music of another world and another time. Their craft belongs to the ages, and will sustain, long after we are gone.

  • @sfkeating I couldn`t agree more, my sentiments completely. I was wondering which superlatives to use but you have read my mind, many thanks. How on this or any other earth 42 people can dislike this is beyond me, unless they prefer another recording to this one!! but to dislike Alfred Brendels playing on this is impossible.

  • @sfkeating So well put - yes the timeless real creative enduring legacy of humanity's positive attributes, the pinnacles of our legacy to the universe :)

  • @sfkeating *sips tea and adjusts monocle* Mmm-yes indubitably.

  • @sfkeating a gift to humanity maybe, but it is a shame that too often those who posses these gifts live a life of drawbacks and pain. in the case of Schubert, syphilys and poorness. But perhaps it is the pain, the suffering that brings out the best or the worst in people

  • @sfkeating Cool Story Brah

  • Merveilleux

  • FANTASTIC JOB.

  • What I've always appreciated about Brendel is his strong and skilled left hand, how you can hear the bass louder and more clearly than with many other players.

  • can it get any better than this? :-)

  • I should post a video of Youp van 't Hek here, but nicely done yes.

  • Goose bumps...

  • hes one with the piano

  • BRAVO MAESTRO!!!

  • superbo!!!!!

  • magnifico !!!

  • Wow! This is amazing...first time I've ever heard it...glad I listened to him :)

  • beautiful and it looks so easy..

  • Sehr schön gespielt, voll Hingabe an Schuberts Musik. Das ist eins meiner Lieblings-Klavierstücke.

  • ...merveilleux... MERCI

  • Im starting to learn this song now for certificate of performance... absolutely beautiful, the melodic line sings wonderfully, with the left hand backing it giving it density.. with added expression and slight rubato... woowww

    This is played perfectly!

  • after hearing other professionals flying void of emotion through this piece, this sounds like every note getting the love and time that it deserves. There is a reason he is so highly regarded for interpreting Schubert :)

  • nice, he´s so highly valueted, that someone can´t believe, but he is remarkable

    pianist, maybe the genius,

Brendel!

  • BEAUTIFUL(:

  • This piece was played with all heart and emotion... such a mastery of Schubert's romantic side.

  • this and some nag champa burning is just.....heavenly

  • Playing this better is impossible...

  • @thommy61 Zimerman gives him a run for his money, but you're right, at this level, no one can play this better.

  • @zrouth by the way, i totaly agree among other comments with sfkeatings comment above, thoose compositions like Brendel and Schubert are a gift to humanity.

He plays exactly like my ears want it to hear ,as I read in another comment.

  • @thommy61 yes, i agree. I find this one sounds the most like how I personally envision this piece to sound but thats what makes music so great. brendal, zimerman, and all the other guys play a completely different sounding interpretation of this one song. all are equally different and equally brilliant. you really can't go wrong with schubert.

  • @thommy61 Zimerman is much better

Misterioso, Magico!!!

Brendel que Maestro!!!!!!! (y todos los otros tambien!!!)

  • very!!!! from MEXICO

  • @Tubztele wow, you are an ass

  • this pitched a tent in my pants, thank you so much mr brendel

  • Happy birthday Mr. Brendel!

  • Thank you, a wonderful performance, and inspirational to me, although I tend to prefer a slightly faster tempo: at this speed, I think it tends to feel too sentimental.

  • One of the best performances ever. The music is likely to flow from the pianist

  • Feine Arbeit!

  • ethereal beauty

  • @WilliamTellsofDeath You have to play for 30 years - Maybe then will you understand it.

  • can someone please tell me if there is a download of this version?

  • @VLADpwnsALL

    Hi,

This is from a video recorded in Snape the year 2000. It was released by BBC and Opus Arte. Catalogue Number OA 0811 D. I believe it is still available.

I was the record producer and yes, it was as magical as what you hear here.

    MdF

  • my brother met yer man brendel last night! a real gentleman!

  • :'(

  • I know who his inspiration was for this interpretation. It is a fact that Brendel drew a lot of his inspiration from Edwin Fischer. If you search for Fischer's recording, you'll hear where Brendel probably got some of the more basic elements of this one. Its interesting to see it passed down.

Brendel's is definitely more reserved than Fischer's, but I'm out as to whose is better... The recording quality of this one and the quality of the instrument itself gives Brendel an unfair advantage...

  • @hellomate639 ...well Edwin Fischer was his 'teacher' as in he took master classes with him. So...I guess of course. That said, this is one of the pieces in classical music (another, for me, would be Gould doing the Brahms Intermezzi) that I find so just to the music, cerebral while being highly emotional, that I have a hard time considering it not the definitive recording. I heard (and hope I am not misquoting him) that Brendel himself cherishes this recording.

  • @onegnometorule

I don't think so. I thought Brendel simply attended masterclasses- observed them. IDK, give me more info please, I don't feel like researching it myself... lol....

  • i played like this once, i was 6 and considered a prodigy at the time. i made 200k a year and everyone wanted my skill. sadly i woke up.....=[

  • @jigglybandit Please tell us your story, must be very interesting.

  • incantevole...cattura i 5 sensi con delicata armonia...

  • Lovely, in its own way. Wiil I ever be the virtuoso Brendel is? No, but -- the composer called for this to be played Andante, and I like it much better played slower with more expression. It seems so rushed, almost Allegro.

    What do you think?

  • His playing is beautiful, but I like Horowitz's tone color better.

  • oh god this is so beautiful

i thank god for letting Schubert write this, and Mr Brendel play this.

now sorry but i m gonna cry a little bit.

There are some beautiful things in Humanity. Brendel playing Schubert, it's just beautiful and pure. The world can keep walking in the wrong way, there will always be some men (or women...) to make us dream.
