@andyfinch13 You sir, haven't got any clue of Brendel and how he made Schubert the man he is for us right now in Austria. I wonder which version you heard, that you think, this is how it's not meant to be played... You seem to probably not even have the sense for such music, or a complete different access to this kind of music :o
I enjoyed listening to Zimerman playing this...but you know what ? OH WOW, Brendel really nailed it! That was just beautiful...specially looking at his face...you can tell he knows this piece by heart and enjoys playing it so much....great vid!
It's equality in his fingering weight that makes his playing sound so clear. None of this loud on the index, weak on the 3rd finger, loud on the 4th finger. He plays very clearly because of it. Of course his dynamic choices are excellent as well. I was listening to him play a chromatic scale. It was beautiful. It was played with perfectly even rhythm and dynamics. The abc's of piano shows up at concert level too. I also like the ring to his notes. Beautiful articulation execution.
@robertslistening Wow man, you are right on. You understand. I would have thumbs upped your comment, but Google has censored me. They have disabled my ability to thumbs up or thumbs down a comment.
The speaker maker B&W put this video on their promotion DVD. The performance and the sound are just amazing. I have one pair of B&Ws, I can listen to this for two hours without stop. I can feel it touching my soul.....
Franz Peter Schubert (German pronunciation: [ˈfʁants ˈʃuːbɛɐ̯t]; January 31, 1797 – November 19, 1828) was an Austrian composer.
Although he died at an early age, Schubert was tremendously prolific. He wrote some 600 Lieder, nine symphonies (including the famous "Unfinished Symphony"), liturgical music, operas, some incidental music, and a large body of chamber and solo piano music. . (From Wikipedia)
Interesting how playing this simply and without sentimentality can evoke a stronger reaction than when it's played molto espressivo. Probably closer to Schubert's original vision than many other fine versions out there.
I was transfixed by the interpretation, had to listen repeatedly to take more of it in..tears came to my eyes thinking of Schubert's short life and what we all missed by his premature passing. The quality of the playing and of the video are great beyond mere description!
There's something else I just noticed about Brendel's playing. That tempo is beautiful. It's so contemplative. I think he plays this best, that I have heard, between...Zimmerman, Perahia, Lipatti, Rubenstein and others. Those dynamics also speak poetic. Lipatti was my 2nd favorite. Just my opinions.
This Impromptu in G-flat Major is Alfred Brendel's signature piece, and understandably so. He is the finest living interpreter of the piano music of Franz Schubert, and this is one of Schubert's most melodically moving works. The combination of this artist and this composer is unsurpassable!
I'm currently learning this piece. But mine is "Impromptu Op. 90 No. 3 Schubert Arranged by GALYA" It is the easy version of this, but I'm only 13 so it seems only fair. haha.
the secret to every genius is subtlety, and brendel has mastered this art to perfection. the nuances in his music can only be appreciated the more you listen to him. he doesn't need any performance or theatrics, just him, the piano, and those wonderful, wonderful hands. someone please knight this man.
I love the slight use of rubato at the end of the phrases, and the slight pauses before some of the high notes, its makes the song so much more dramatic, yet beautiful.
@MrPakired really?..I listened to his version. A bit too fast and lacking finesse for my liking, but that is why there are different pianists for different people.
There are those rare beings who do precisely what they were born to do. Their journey through this life is a gift to humanity, and in this we have both Brendel and Schubert.
It is music of another world and another time. Their craft belongs to the ages, and will sustain, long after we are gone.
@sfkeating I couldn`t agree more, my sentiments completely. I was wondering which superlatives to use but you have read my mind, many thanks. How on this or any other earth 42 people can dislike this is beyond me, unless they prefer another recording to this one!! but to dislike Alfred Brendels playing on this is impossible.
@sfkeating So well put - yes the timeless real creative enduring legacy of humanity's positive attributes, the pinnacles of our legacy to the universe :)
@sfkeating a gift to humanity maybe, but it is a shame that too often those who posses these gifts live a life of drawbacks and pain. in the case of Schubert, syphilys and poorness. But perhaps it is the pain, the suffering that brings out the best or the worst in people
What I've always appreciated about Brendel is his strong and skilled left hand, how you can hear the bass louder and more clearly than with many other players.
Im starting to learn this song now for certificate of performance... absolutely beautiful, the melodic line sings wonderfully, with the left hand backing it giving it density.. with added expression and slight rubato... woowww
after hearing other professionals flying void of emotion through this piece, this sounds like every note getting the love and time that it deserves. There is a reason he is so highly regarded for interpreting Schubert :)
@zrouth by the way, i totaly agree among other comments with sfkeatings comment above, thoose compositions like Brendel and Schubert are a gift to humanity.
He plays exactly like my ears want it to hear ,as I read in another comment.
@thommy61 yes, i agree. I find this one sounds the most like how I personally envision this piece to sound but thats what makes music so great. brendal, zimerman, and all the other guys play a completely different sounding interpretation of this one song. all are equally different and equally brilliant. you really can't go wrong with schubert.
Misterioso, Magico!!!
Brendel que Maestro!!!!!!! (y todos los otros tambien!!!)
Thank you, a wonderful performance, and inspirational to me, although I tend to prefer a slightly faster tempo: at this speed, I think it tends to feel too sentimental.
This is from a video recorded in Snape the year 2000. It was released by BBC and Opus Arte. Catalogue Number OA 0811 D. I believe it is still available.
I was the record producer and yes, it was as magical as what you hear here.
I know who his inspiration was for this interpretation. It is a fact that Brendel drew a lot of his inspiration from Edwin Fischer. If you search for Fischer's recording, you'll hear where Brendel probably got some of the more basic elements of this one. Its interesting to see it passed down.
Brendel's is definitely more reserved than Fischer's, but I'm out as to whose is better... The recording quality of this one and the quality of the instrument itself gives Brendel an unfair advantage...
@hellomate639 ...well Edwin Fischer was his 'teacher' as in he took master classes with him. So...I guess of course. That said, this is one of the pieces in classical music (another, for me, would be Gould doing the Brahms Intermezzi) that I find so just to the music, cerebral while being highly emotional, that I have a hard time considering it not the definitive recording. I heard (and hope I am not misquoting him) that Brendel himself cherishes this recording.
I don't think so. I thought Brendel simply attended masterclasses- observed them. IDK, give me more info please, I don't feel like researching it myself... lol....
Lovely, in its own way. Wiil I ever be the virtuoso Brendel is? No, but -- the composer called for this to be played Andante, and I like it much better played slower with more expression. It seems so rushed, almost Allegro.
There are some beautiful things in Humanity. Brendel playing Schubert, it's just beautiful and pure. The world can keep walking in the wrong way, there will always be some men (or women...) to make us dream.
Thats music !

What do you think?

His playing is beautiful, but I like Horowitz's tone color better.

There are some beautiful things in Humanity. Brendel playing Schubert, it's just beautiful and pure. The world can keep walking in the wrong way, there will always be some men (or women...) to make us dream.
