Hey to all my welding bros. I been MIG welding 6years and yes u can weld forward or backwards as long as you're not doing it vertical or by inspectors way. Nice video
I have been welding for 7 years. this guy has no idea what he is doing, I have 8 certifications from five different U.S. states. About the only thing he did right was tack it on the backside. lol. Read the top comment of which direction he should have been traveling. This is because this gives the shielding gas(Usually a 90/10 mixture ) the ability to shield the atmospheric air away from the bead. If it were stick (SMAW) then the flux provides this. Overall listen to @bichn01 ....SMH..
@savagealeut1212 it really doesnt matter if you have certificates if you learn on the job in a working envornment you will be way better off then welding to pieces of metal over and over again in a class, i have a certificate to and that doesnt mean im a professional, i didnt start welding my best till i was learning to weld in different positions and longer beeds and two different gauges of metal
Believe me my friend I'm not trying to start anything. I was having a bad day and took it out on you at random, please accept my apology. Now that I feel better let me properly articulate what I was trying to say; There are people--such as myself--that would love to learn how to weld, and weld properly. Youtube is one of my only resources to learn technique. Being that you know what you're doing would you please make a video explaining basic technique to people like me? It would help.
@Justicejamesb I willl make a video when I get time, for beginners to understand the basic princibles of welding and how to set the welder also for the material thickness, no problems.
Where I live we have 90% humidity for most of the year so MIG welders can be a pain in the butt. When you come to use it usually the wire has gone rusty and the gas has leaked away. Amazingly the rust will get right to the centre of a full sized reel of wire which then has to be thrown away. Never had that trouble with a buzz box and a set of rods. Do it right and the slag curls up and falls off.
There are only 2 circumstances when you would drag the gun of a MIG as he is showing in this video, 1- when using flux cored wire & 2 when welding really thin gauge sheet metal. The fella welding here does not seam to have a clue, maybe he is getting mixed up between his MMA and MIG techniques.
my suggestion when learning welding always keep an open mind and listen to not just one person with technique, as when you have been welding long enough you will see others that do rather obscure methods. My suggestion is to learn with a pulse mig welding aluminium this will really refine your technique and understanding of penetration of metal, you weld aluminium backwards you will fail same as using tig aswell, seems as tho this fella used a arc welder to begin with, arc you work backwards.
hence why some peeps never weld anything over inch thick, there is only one correct technique when welding!! simply put what he has done is incorrect but this does not mean to say it wont hold, when you weld things that are stress tested and xray ed, stuff thats like over a foot in thickness and made of bis-alloy and using fluxcore wire then yes technique is very much crucial, the inert gas used for welding is designed to also cover the area where you are welding to not from!!!
i just started welding yesterday, and i got the same mast as the guy learning. haha. im 17 and i was taught like this " heres a welder and a mask. i dont have a mask so ill be watching tv. try to get that scrap metal stuck together" haha. so i suck... :( be happy you have a teacher!
how long have you been welding, for one I have been a boiler maker for 10years plus and Ive never ever seen anyone weld the wrong way so much im shocked you made this video , first you are working backwards with the mig , secondly not enough grunt used ,no penitration, looked like cold duck shit weld to me, if you are going to give instructions on how to weld clean and proper at least point the gun in the direction you are working to get newbies the correct intructions to begin with.
I don't weld. All I have to go on are the comments that people like you make here. This guy was giving ME a lesson, as I don't know anything about it.
i dont know all the namings in english but i'm an x-ray approved pipe welder and this is how i'd say it:
He's using the MIG welding process with a welding wire thats not filled with powder inside, (MIG welding can be filled on the inside with powder like the 'lining' of a baguette with MMA welding). if the welding wire isnt filled with power and just is purely the type of metal your going to weld, you need to hold your torch in a pushing way.
when your welding with a nonfilled wire, and you use a pulling movement, you will get all thosse sparks landing on your weld, and means a bit of work to get them off (important if you work as a welder :) )
if you weld with a filled wire, like rutile or filled wire, you can use a pulling movement cause there will be a slag on the weld, and the welding 'sparks' will fly onto the slag, and the slag is easily too remove, usually coms off itself if you weld it good :)
@bichn01 you stupid idiot! you must have been working as a laborer for 10 years for all you know. MIG welding is designed to push or pull the weld, its all according to preferences!! Even a two-year apprentice like me knows that!! how about knowing your own shit before finding flaws in other peoples!! Yes, he was running it a bit cold, but jesus before you comment on another man's welds, how about practice your spelling a bit mr. 'penitration'
@bichn01 STOP HATING! This shit is getting OLD! Every instructional video on youtube is full of haters going "thats not the way its done!" fuck-off already! You so called perfectionists seem to never have any videos of your own, just hating on those tryna help others! Get a life, get a brain - the hater shits gettin old --- only LOSERS hate! say sumthen nice of dont speak at all!
@personalfunfest I dont hate any one just mentioned it was incorrect , and no why would I post a video on how to weld when clearly you believe welding backwards with a mig is correct, so all i can say to those that do this good luck finding a job when when technique is the first thing a Q.A inspector looks at, Clearly this job does not require such extremes but when you get into structural integrity side of things and you job in getting inspected you will need to exert actual proper technique
@bichn01 hows that backwards? you CAN weld forwards or backwards, it makes no difference, the heat does need to go up because i can see there is very little penetration on the first few welds.
Short circuit mig transfer doesn't really produce any difference whether you push or pull, so long as the puddle is maintained properly. And you can see from the video that the guy instructing had a decent-looking bead.
It's assholes like you that make me wish I never became a welder... this industry's got no shortage of pricks who think they're God's gift to metallurgy and are too fucking selective in their memory of what their first beads looked like.
@bichn01 So, you get on here and bash this guys video. But, you don't make one showing us how to properly weld. I have an idea; shut your mouth and make a video of your own if you're such big shit in welding.
3.arc welding is the only time you work "down hand"
4. did state 'yes the weld will hold but it would not pass as Q.A approved'.
I am not saying Im the worlds greatest welder just simply stating in my opinion and from engineers have explained to me when I done my apprenticeship why we work forward when using mig, Believe what you want Im on 65 an hour fly in fly out mines.
hey am new at the welding thing...but can anyone tell me what KIND of welding is that he's doing...i've heard of arc welding but this dont look like it :/
@kimchiman1000 This is MIG (Metal Intert Gas), not TIG. Mig uses a gun with a trigger as shown in the vid. TIG uses a torch this a tungsten electrode and commonly a foot pedal.
@kimchiman1000 i see that the other guy said it was MIG. but also just so you know TIG welding is used specifically for for aluminum. It is similar to oxyacetylene welding i think, just with aluminum materials.
@MoneyBlocc868 well if u wana get technical its really gmaw welding (gas metal arc welding) and arc welding is technically smaw welding (sheilded metal arc welding)
@MoneyBlocc868 Samnelso's comment is correct. He's using solid wire, AKA slick wire with 75/25 mix Argon Gas and Carbon Dioxide. Flux Core welding can usually be done on the same machine without switching the rollers, just change the wire type (spool).
Anyone on here who is saying you can PULL a mig is a fucking idiot. You're just covering the seam with metal is all you're doing. PUSHING the wire into the HEATED PUDDLE is what creates a weld.
@2KXJ Why do call anyone who disagree with you "a fucking idiot"? The welder operator does not "push" the wire into the heated puddle. The machine does that. The operator merely "moves" the puddle. Automated robotic mig welders can be programmed to weld in any direction thus negating your theory of "pushing the wire into the HEATED PUDDLE" is superior to "pulling" the puddle. You FUCKING IDIOT!
I am AWS certified welder and the 2009 California Ag Welding Champion. You never Pull the pudle with mig you always push it make a stronger and much better bead.
@kimchiman1000 im a 15 year old in a high school welding class, and ive tried all types of welding (except underwater) and i am the best at TIG in that class, i compete in the Skills USA welding competitions, and i made it all the was to nationals, and that was my first year in the class, welding is a great career choice, since there isnt to many welders anymore, they're all going for the medical stuff, pft wimps.
A rare few of us do both. Welding is a great skill, and a solid career choice, but that doesn't give you cause to knock the dedication and intelligence of medical professionals. Its like me saying you must have a low IQ because you weld instead of going to 8 years of school. I bet you wouldn't like that, would you?
If being a physicist with an IQ of over 140 (that's genius level, genius.) makes me a "dumb fuck," then I'm curious to know where that leaves YOU on the scale of intelligence. What everyone here DOES know now...is that you are an ass.
@NeverDieProductions well tech you can push or pull i have always pulled except vertical....i am certified in all positions with all processes. the only thing i dont have yet and will soon is alu. pipe. which isnt that bad. but anyway with dragging its naturally not going to be as flat as pushing but with a lil jiggle it will be. thx
Its not the end of the weld to push or pull, depends on the amps, when you talk vertical up or down, up with have heaps better penetration if you are welding material over 5mm.
Its not the end of the world to push or pull, depends on the amps, when you talk vertical up or down, up with have heaps better penetration if you are welding material over 5mm.
I agree with you, i am not coded welder but have alot of experience in the trade, the best i know is to push forward as you try to keep 45 degree on the gun...
@NeverDieProductions I strongly disagree. Pulling a weld can be just as strong and accurate if you know how and you'd never be able to tell the difference. I am currently 6g certified and every test was done pulling. Every weld test fully passed Xray and stress tests.
You can pull with a MIG gun. Just set your feed and voltage to the right settings and you have it. It is the same concept as going up hill vs downhill.
Yes, but the weld never feeds into the base metal and will be significantly weaker than if you push molten metal into the weld front, allowing greater penetration and a better amalgamation of base and introduced metals.
all your doing is laying it on the top of the material u need to push the mig gun into the material to get the penentration hence the reason why ya weld is so buldged up cos its just layin it on top
hahaha MIG on the flat is vefry easy. Jon is very right, no question, but its the easiest. I like air arc gouging off my worn out tootah shanks, and re welding new ones on with 223 arctec rod. however if your gonna reskin a bucket for example go to a CO2 shielded .045 wire, thats a nice diameter for smaller shops that have heavy equipment
Hey! very timely post. I just bought a Lincoln 225 Arc welder yesterday. $80 with 50 foot extension cord included! Very tough to weld with it, Ive only managed to punch holes and splatter with it.
When I was young I learned electric arc welding, wearing heavy thick gloves, holding a clamp that held rigid welding rods. Now Jon was holding a flexible wire dispenser, which I presume was lighter & easier to use. I never learned MIG and TIG welding. Thanks for sharing.
OK I was always taught to push with larger material and this guys welding blows ass

You can pull with a MIG gun. Just set your feed and voltage to the right settings and you have it. It is the same concept as going up hill vs downhill.

@MrZaffo
Yes, but the weld never feeds into the base metal and will be significantly weaker than if you push molten metal into the weld front, allowing greater penetration and a better amalgamation of base and introduced metals.

Someone Sounds like john goodman, and knows how to weld.

all your doing is laying it on the top of the material u need to push the mig gun into the material to get the penentration hence the reason why ya weld is so buldged up cos its just layin it on top

real men burn with a 7018 stick
Markmeblablabla 3 years ago
you bet, the 223 arctec has a bit better caqrbon content. but you just cant beat 7018
gangesex 3 years ago
Yeah I use it for everything, dosent matter how thick or thin, I just grab a 1/8 and go. but I'm no professional either
Markmeblablabla 3 years ago
hahaha MIG on the flat is vefry easy.

Mig is good if the steel is new and dry and your working in a shop. Learn how to weld to stick then you can weld.
Graveltrucker 3 years ago
Mig welding is like using a caulking gun anybody can do it LOL
Better not learn how to weld or you will be rebuilding buckets for your boss HA HA

This is why I'm stuck as the only guy with a class one license; Jon refuses to get one of those for the same reason.

When I was young I learned electric arc welding, wearing heavy thick gloves, holding a clamp that held rigid welding rods. Now Jon was holding a flexible wire dispenser, which I presume was lighter & easier to use. I never learned MIG and TIG welding. Thanks for sharing.
