There is no way this was intended to be offensive and no way it was seen as offensive. It's harmless joking playing on a stereotype. Sketches like this and the likes of Carry On and Are you being served? have made our society more liberal. Look at America where this kind of humor has always been dubbed politically incorrect and sensitive. This character is laughed 'with' as much as 'at'. I like Dick! I mean Mr. Emery of course.
This show was brilliant, spesh when Roy Kinnear did the crim father and son sketches with him, it's funny how i grew up watching this, Alf Garnet, Benny Hill and Kenny Everett etc and by the time i was 18 in 1990 they were all suddenly regarded as outdated/offensive/bullying/oppressive & even dangerous by all the emerging politically minded stifling lefty PC brigade who edged their style out (hello Ben Elton'n co) of course now look outdated/offensive/bullying/oppressive and even dangerous :-/
I'm 50,(groan),& I well remember watching this as a kid & 'getting it',all the 'double entendres' & 'innuendos'.Oh,& watching my dad, blustering behind his newspaper & muttering about 'bloody pooftahs' but still managing to have a chuckle over it all. Thing about the great Dick Emery was that he never seemed to be doing it to cause offense.Well, why would he?! He & the likes of John Inman & Larry Grayson 'cocked a snoop' at the establishment.Gawd bless 'em all,is what I say!
I was weaned on this stuff, used to watch it with my sister and dad and we would all kill ourselves laughing. Of course this kind of comedy looks slightly outdated and some would take offence now in this obsessively PC climate, but I adored Dick Emery - a man ahead of his time. Great Post.
What i love about these clips is that apart from the obvious camp comedy being hilarious is that it's all done with genuine warmth and affection for the character and not a hint of brashness or coarseness - how could anyone not like Clarence!
Such blatant innuendo at the expense of the, 'gay', populace wouldn't be allowed nowadays. Not in these politically correct times we now live in. Back then, people weren't offended by such tomfoolery. It was purely seen as comical to play on the idea of how some gay men are. Nothing malicious or anything to be offended by. How times change. And, not for the better.
I'm a poof and this is sooooo funny. Thank you for posting it. I hated this stuff when I was a teenager in the 70s, but now I find it joyous, silly and, yes, liberating. And where did he get those clothes? Well done Mr Emery!
i liked it because he was so open and unashamed - and also such a nice everyday good-natured and friendly neighbour. there's a not-gay -but-tranny version of honkytonks here in my small coastal town - and we all love him
