It's a university mascot people...relax. It makes perfect sense for the Cincinnati Zoo to have and house a live mascot for the Univ of Cincinnati. It's called a Bearcat. It is very similar to a wolverine and badger - same family probably. (i am checking on Yahoo Q&A.)
But UC Bearcats can kick the crap out of Binghamton Bearcats.)
They are in a different family. Bearcats, also known as binturongs, are in the same family as civets and genets. Coatimundis are in the same family as raccoons and kinkajous.
They're a -zoo-. They're supposed to help people be in-the-know about animals. But all is does is show that people shouldn't know what to call them properly, and rather should call them by nicknames just because the world is obsessed with sports.
Maybe I'm getting out of hand. They don't do that with all the animals. But I still find it just ridiculous that they call it the bearcat -all the time-.
It's not even that the binturong's species name is Arctictus Binturong. It could anything. The fact of the matter is that the animal is the binturong. That is its name. Not just its species name, but its real name. Not bearcat.
I used to go to the Cincinatti Zoo all the time since I could walk (maybe even before then) and the sign for them was always labed Binturong until very recently. It irked me like crazy but like you said, people are obsessed with sports. They don't take good care of it's mom. It was in a TINY enclosure and pacing like mad.
I'll admit it irritates me that you guys didn't once call them "binturong". Bearcat is not their proper name, and it doesn't help when people call them just bearcats because they don't know better.
The animal genus is "Arctictis" and its species is "binturong". Its common name is bearcat. Humans are homo sapiens, so to be consistent, you should also insist that humans should be called "sapiens".
I suppose you're right, but you don't see them calling any other animal by a nickname. And besides, anyone could realize they're only making such a big deal out of it because the team in Cincinnati is the Bearcats.
I first fell in love with binturongs (the proper name for bearcats) at Tampa Big Cat Rescue. They smell like popcorn when you get up close to them -- fresh buttered popcorn. It's the most amazing thing! They smell as good as they are cute. :)
Congratulations to the Cincinnati Zoo for presenting yet another marvelous ambassador! Welcome, and long may you represent both the Zoo and the University!
Wow!! I've been watching documentaries on all species of Bear and Cats for a log time, but never ever knew something as cute as a Bearcat existed!!
xD Thank you so much.

Saw one of these clowns at the Big Cat Rescue in Tampa. They're normally nocturnal, and are actually a member of the raccoon family.

Isn't that my point exactly, though?

Genus and Species for:
- domestic dogs = Canis familiaris
- cow = Bos Taurus
- opossum = Didelphys marsupialis
- shrew = Sorex araneus
- lion = Panthera leo
- coyote = Canis latrans
Not very many animals go by their species name.

Bear Cats are amazing at any size, but especially as babies, when they climb across people's shoulders as if they were bridges. I want one.

Those thing are so cool, I wish I could have one as a pet or at least see one. 5*
