Train #3 CSX east bound on the old Chessie/C&O. *I think at one time it was Seaboard's line. This is a neat posting. My "history" with lines going out of Richmond begins in 1965, the year I was born there. I recall my first train at age three: An SAL street runner switcher on the lower south side, not far from this location, yanking about 10 long tankers; Flanging down the cobblestone street w/1 horn.
This is awesome! I grew up in nearby Chesterfield County on the "Hopewell Run" out of Bellwood by DGSC. (SCL at the time) Although this footage is after the mergers and name changes, it still sounds just like it did back in 1971 thru 1978 when I lived there. Go SCL!! Thanks for posting!!
If you could please show me some sort of link to prove this. It would be interesting to find out. The Southern came in to Richmond but I would be surprised to find out if the N&W actually did.
I don't know of any photos, but I have atleast one book I know of showing an N&W K class steam unit crossing the ACL/RF&P James River Stone Arch bridge.
I have a book.."N&W and Virginian Rwy. In Color", by H. Reid. There is ref. to trains 21 and 22 operating between Norfolk and Richmond using ACL trackage (Richmond-Petersburg)..then to the N&W for Norfolk. So was "bucko" a jab or just a term frequently used. Afterall..Im a big boy and can take correction on mistakes when they are made..but given the capital lettered "wrong" and exclamation point, I can only imagine your excitement that you have may have "won". Nevertheless...interesting info.
i drive past here on the way down to the beach, well stop there for breakfast at a mcdonalds by a gas station, i here them come through while we eat. Anyway i go down to kure beach down by wilmington in nort carolina
Kure Beach? I sold my old Land Rover to a guy named Jerry Dockery down there. He restored it, painted it with Zebra stripes, and runs tours of the island with his wife -- their company is "Pleasure Island Safari" -- check 'em out!
Just off-frame to the left it goes through a gate in the James River Flood Wall, but may have also been greeting nearby trains. YouTube won't let me put in a link but if you Google Map "main street station richmond va" and switch to satellite view, you will see a big highway (I-95) and a half-cloverleaf intercange just to the south of the station. The Triple Crossing is just in the south-west quadrant of the cloverleaf and you can see the NS track and floodwall to the east.
Yes it is, the bridge gave way from under the train, and it occurred on the Seaboard "Side" of this place and on the other side of the wall there that the rails go "through"
Great catches!!!

so therefore no J , Y, or A class locomotives would have been seen there

WRONG! N&W had passenger service over the ACL/SAL to Richmond Main. St. Station, do your history bucko! and it was J and K class streamlined steamers

I'll talk with you privately about it.

Let me rephrase that...just not passenger service. N&W was not in Richmond altogether.

N&W did not run passenger service into Richmond. The Southern, C&O, SAL, ACL, & RF&P went into Richmond.
