here's some good gouge for you to go through. The first response has lots of links posted with the specifications of each. Both are good platforms, but i'm a little more biased towards the Marine side. and the mission overall mission of the Skid is a lot cooler in my humble opinion
Because the apache is more famous, and looks don't ALWAYS matter, the AH1 was built so that when it dived down for a gun/rocket strike it would be thin and hard to hit whereas the apache was built to stay in the same spot and pop up to shoot @ long range then hide the cobra gets down in the dirt with the troops at like 75feet but the AH64 will come in and stay @ 200-300ft and shoot long range
the ah-1z may not have the offensive technologies of the apache but its faster, more survivable, more versatile, has a longer range, is harder to hit, a bit cheaper, and shares about 80% of the same engine parts of the uh-1y
i can, the AH1Z is newer, faster, cheaper to maintain and produce, carries the SAME weapons and the same payload as the Apache plus air-to-air weapons, its easier to adapt to enviormental conditions, it is more survivable, it is harder to hit, it is slightly quieter, it carries over 50% commonality in engine parts with the UH1-Y. its downfalls, the gun is inferior to the apache's m230 but it is still an effective weapon, it has a shorter range, and the AH1W conversions (1of2)
the apache carries the Hydra rockets, AGM114 hellfire missiles, and i believe that some export versions can fire the TOW wire-guided anti-tank missile
The AH1Z carries all of that PLUS multiple air-to-air missiles, the Javelin anti-tank missile on the wing tips, and i think it is able to utalize the Stinger air-to-air missile on the wingtips. they both carry the Longbow targeting system. the only big armament difference is the gun
@futurejarhead0311 I knew that the7 both had AGM Hellfires and Hydras, but isn't it true that the Apache's nose gun is better? I mean, it's a chain gun operated electronically, whereas the AH-1Z's is a line of sight minigun.
ya, the apache has a chain-operated 30mm single barreled cannon (designated M230) the apache carries up to 1100 rounds of ammo
the AH1Z and AH1W carry the 3 barreled M137 20mm cannon, and Because all AH1's were built to be LIGHT gunships it only carries 700 or so rounds so it can stay light enough to keep its high speed. and it is mounted in a limited area of movement turret, the AH64 has a free-mounted hanging turret. (1of2)
if they made the AH1 a little wider and put the M230 instead of the M137 and made it carry 950-1000 rounds of ammunition than the AH1Z would be superior in EVERY SINGLE category compared to the AH64.
@futurejarhead0311 Then why is that everyone considers the Apache to be superior to the Super Cobra/Viper? I know the Apache just looks like a badass, and the Viper looks kinda lame.
@TheSilentOne50 who is "everyone" that considers the Apache to be superior to Skids? both platforms have different missions, and it's very apparent that you don't know the mission for either one. The only reason the Apache was made is to kill tanks. not to mention it's flown by the army. that's it's first flaw right there
@TheSilentOne50 No, look at history. Both were made during the Cold War, but for two different types of threats. The Apache was built to combat Soviet made tanks, and that is its main mission. Skids are designed to provide close-air support to Marines on the ground. It was first designed in Vietnam to provide CAS for troops because not only can they get into the enemy's face, but they can stay there. I think this provides a little more "cool factor" than whatever the Apache has
@ShamusAndAce Ah. I see. Thanks for the info. However, I may sound like a douche, but the Apache is a lot more aesthetically appealing. Strangely, the Apache is considered the top helo in the world.
@TheSilentOne50 haha I'm going to take a gander and say that that information comes from Top 10 or whatever that show is on the military channel, because I've seen it as well. you have to remember that show was probably made 15 years ago, when the Apache itself was still relatively new. In today's age, I believe it would more reasonably be the Zulu model
@ShamusAndAce As an Apache fan myself, I'd say the Zulu scores better on versatility (sea ops) and service life for sure. As far as performance, well....there's flight performance, then there is combat performance. I have every reason to believe that the Z upgrades put the Viper on par with Apache as far combat goes (otherwise, the Apache would have been upgraded as well). Flight performance in unique to each airframe, so, idk. But a high 5 for logistics (Huey/Viper 84% parts commonality). Nice!
@TheSilentOne50 have a more used and worn frame. if you made all the AH1Z's with new airframes it would be at least 5x more combat effective than the apache
@Contrajoe The only way you would have that problem in Premiere or any video editing software is if you used a 1080i camera to record. Because the quality falls under a 720i spectrum, you get the smaller picture without the width comparison. This was probably encoded as 'same as source' rather than 1080p or 720p. Therefore you get a reduction in appearance. But the quality is still there. Trust me...I do this for a living.
The coolest upgraded gunship ever i think. Shame we dont use them in unison with AH-64's, these for up-close fly-by attacks while the Apaches hang back and nail away at harder targets with racks of missiles.
@peepeevagi With the exception of the area weapons system on the apache, and point weapons system on the cobra, (30mm HE vs. 20mm)they essentially do the exact same thing with the exact same munitions... That said, I really wish the army hadn't spent so much money on the Apache, and had just stuck with the cobra... I mean, the Zulu Viper is only marginally (if at all) inferior to the 64-D, and looks 100% cooler...
The Cobra is inferior electronics wise. They've gotten all the use out of the frame they're probably going to get, and you'd have to rebuild the entire aircraft from the ground up to put it in par electronics wise(It's like comparing M60A3's to M1A1/A2/s). The Apache is also faster, can carry a bigger load, more maneuverable, and It's even better armored.
But like you said, it's only 'marginally' inferior. Shame the military doesn't like obsolescence unless they cant do anything about it..
LOL Finally when I youtube search AH-1Z ZULU / ETC I actually get the real deal and not some lame ass RC helicopter crap, thank you!

first there was the cobra. Then, there was the super cobra. Now we have the super-duper ccobra.

The Army seems to change stuff on the whim of some political general (buying influence I guess), while the Marines just upgrade what they know works.

What's better? This or an Apache Longbow?
Not an AH-1W, an AH-1Z.

@TheSilentOne50 The Ah-1Z
wolverinelova11 9 months ago
@wolverinelova11 can you explain why? I mean, the Apache has been touted as the best attack helo ever. This seems kinda like the underdog.

Still has the Huey "buzz" on the engines but it makes much less noise. I can't wait for the squadron at Robins AFB to get their hands on these.

Was this processed in Adobe Premiere? It certainly has the trait of being too small a video.
