  • The cinematography in that street scene... amazing!

  • in this scene we can see that Michael has freed himself from what Freud called the Oedipus complex

  • Thats what I call emotional.

  • If I had to kill someone I thought of as a father - I would have shut my eyes because it's just sad you know?

  • Paul Newman getting communion scene is epic even though he's a hit man he follows his faith and accepts values, morals, and ethics. Except for killing people.

  • When Michale Sullivan shoots, no bullets hit the car. The Thompson is notoriously inaccurate at long range

  • God that was so sad. As soon as he saw his driver was dead he knew it was over.

  • Tom Hanks is such a brilliant actor, amazing...

  • What a scene to end Paul Newman s career with. It's like the torch was passed to Tom hanks. Great film great upload. Not fast food cinema.

  • @kocean1 "I'm glad it was you"

  • @kocean1 You know Newman didn't die til 2008. And this movie was made in 2002. Just wanted to let you know.

  • i am glad its you wow....

  • All fathers care for their sons.

  • Beautiful movie. Such a brilliant scene between two great actors...

  • "None of us will see Heaven."

    Goddamn!

  • if you hear shooting from the street, always run to the window...and, hey, dont forget to turn the lights on too!

  • dumm apps on the side mad annoying

  • Powerful scene between Hanks and Newman!! Best part of the movie.

  • The scene when Michael open the gun case gave me chills

  • school teacher my ass

  • The slow, saturation of the music that descends in the background at Rooney's shooting gives me chills every time I watch this scene.

  • Sullivan - He murdered Anne and Peter.

Rooney - There are ONLY murderers in this room! MICHAEL, open your eyes. There is only one gaurantee, none of us will ever see heaven.

Some of the greatest lines of any movie ever made. Made even more classic by the irony of its setting being the basement of a church.

  • People that take movies and pick them apart with impossibilites, asks questions and points out flaws. Youll never enjoy the movie as much as everyone else...

  • hats off

  • This is no doubt the most compelling & gripping scene in the whole movie, as this is my favorite Irish gangster movie of all time ((& pretty much my favorite gangster movie period, right up there with the Godfather part 1 & 2!))! Spectacular indeed!

  • this movie is probably the best of all time. so under rated, and such great acting by tom hanks paul newman and jude law.

  • It was Connor stealing the money not the dead guy in the beginning of the movie.

  • Fuckin looooooove that Thompson SMG. I want one so bad. Too bad they're about 1500 bucks a pop. :(

  • That scene in the rain has to be one of the most utterly mesmerizing, compelling & superbly filmed scenes in film history. Just like EMUmonster wrote above, this "piece of art that has come to life." For, just like he wrote, this movie was indeed very beautiful, very poetic. This masterpiece!

  • One man Irish wrecking crew!

  • great scene but a little unrealistic in real life Paul newman have been like "Oh SHit!" and booked it.

  • Best gun in the movie! THOMPSON M1921!

  • @Razorblade12161216 i think its a 1928

  • @camerl2009 Nah., It's a M1921 Thompson. IMFDB says so.

  • @Razorblade12161216 yes yor right the 1921 is the only one that can take the drum mag

  • @camerl2009 Not really, The M1921 and M1928 both can take drums and stick magainze, but M1A1 only take stick magainze, not drum.

  • just loved it, Tom Hanks the only real american actor

  • is it me or does each scene look like a painting of fine art

  • @sugercoatedvenom I agree.

  • @sugercoatedvenom You're closer than you think. One of cinematographer Conrad Hall's ideas was to replicate the feel of paintings by Edward Hopper. Check out Hopper's work; the link is very clear. Two great masters of imagery.

  • I like how they keep holding the umbrellas as they fire

  • Comment removed

  • I thought Frank Darabont directed this but it was actually directed by Sam Mendes. He did it justice.

  • Police weren't around in the 40's.

  • @saiano1 haha... yeah they were... maybe not as "Around" as they should've been but they were there.

  • @saiano1 yes they were.

  • @saiano1 This takes place in 1931. And all but a handful of cops would have been on the payroll of Rooney and others like him.

  • Comment removed

  • when they show the windows, with the people in them, after he is done firing......looks like an Edward Hopper painting.....

  • this film has alot of subtle qualities to it.......It's like ShawShank Redemption......you just keep watching it over and over again

  • AWESOME FILM R I P PROHIBITION

  • That was a long ass burst.

  • better than godfather and goodfellas

  • @DaBhoy1916 i disagree. goodfellas was a damn good movie.

  • @goofygoat2009 There all class and de niro and joe pesci are brill but this is different to both them films Goodfellas and casino are really alike

  • @DaBhoy1916 check your grammar. did you know that the godfather and goodfellas are both in the top ten best films of all time according to AFI? it's true. road to perdition is an outstanding story but i would not try to top the godfather if i were you. you will get strange looks from others.

  • @goofygoat2009 Oh sorry didnt know your an english teacher/film critic.... Eat a dick you fat trekkie

  • @DaBhoy1916 wrong again dabhoy! i'm no fat trekkie, nor an english teacher/film critic. just smarter than you, that's all. so, zip it.

  • Road to Perdition is much better than Batman Begins is

  • @92af welll nooo kidding, really?

  • @goofygoat2009 sarcasm is fucking ugly

  • Why this movie is underrated? Because it isn't a kids movie, like Avatar.

  • @EdjeBos There might be some sort of resemblance between Avatar and Road to Perdition. Maybe its the Theme.

  • @EdjeBos It might not be that. The story feels reminiscent of a Red Dead Redemption feel. Granted, not the same story, but that edge, almost brevity of dryness to both feels like it needs to be taken like sips of strong tea. It's powerful, but it requires some restraint on the part of the audience.

  • @PandarenSpartan golly geewiz, you are so wise and insightful!!! may god bless that precious cranium of yours.LMFAO!!!!!

  • @ebuz218

LO god damn L!! After reading ur comment, I read Pandaren's. Yeah, he/she went way 2 deep on that one.

  • @PandarenSpartan give me a break. it's a total set up. tom hanks plays the same sort of personality type that he portrays in other movies - like 'You've Got Mail'. He's the same guy. But in this he's a cold blooded mobster who murders people to 'put food on the table'.

At least the other characters (like jude law) are realisticly twisted and unethical.

'Sips of tea' or 'sips of denial'. If the audience didn't like his character the movie wouldn't succeed.

  • @elenore88 PS. And he's carefully presented as a 'good' mobster. But at the end of the day he's just a hitman for a crook.

And yet his character is one of a man who could walk straight out of this and into a meg ryan romance.

  • @PandarenSpartan well put.

  • 5:43. until the end of this part of video.Christ what a sad but brilliant scene.7:56."I'm glad it's you."Horribly sad as sullivan looks at john rooney before he kills him knowing it was the only way,and rooney knew it also.

  • @jays2474 one of the most well conceived, well executed, and unique action sequences I've ever seen.

  • the backround music during the rain scene is from american beauty

  • @23thedoom Ya Sam Mendez directed American Beauty, and Road To Perdition. This guy is a fantastic director.

  • What does Mr Rooney mean when he says: There are only murderers in this room!

  • @Marchanzen it means both him and mike sullivan have both murdered innocent people before just like connor

  • best scene of the entire movie

  • so why did he kill rooney?

  • @yuckanoob Because, although he didn't want to kill him, it was the only way to protect his son.

  • what did Michael right to young Michael?

  • damn good movie

  • Sulliven has taken lives, lives that God has put on this Earth. In a religious perspective, yes, he would not go to heaven...at least not right away.

  • He said "I'm glad it's you" meaning he was happy it was sullivan rather than some rival or something

  • @Krimzon07

I figure it's because he'd rather be killed by Hanks (Whom he regarded as the Son he should have had). Than his other son Craig who had plans to usurp the old man's position of power anyways.

  • I'm not particularly religious, but I'd be interested to hear what those who are feel about characters like Sullivan, Rooney et al. Are they truly and irrevocably barred from heaven? Sullivan, as much as he seems like a good and caring father, is still a criminal and a murderer. Do his actions on behalf of his son absolve him?

  • Comment removed

  • @mutzibub He says "I"m glad IT'S you". Christ, learn proper grammar!

  • @goofygoat2009 If that bothers you, you sure came to the wrong place. If you care about grammar, spelling, punctuation, or any of that stuff, reading the comments sections on YouTube will make you want to fucking hang yourself.

  • Road To Perdition is a very awesome movie just like The Dark Knight, Flame & Citron, and The Rock.

  • he says "Im glad at you"

because they know they arent gonna see heaven.

Michael will, but he wont if sullivan leaves them alive. Michael would possibly do the dirty work his dad didnt do.

  • 2:44 = a line from the godfather

  • but its the truth....

  • the sad part is that in the end he had to kill the man who was his father figure, boss and mentor all rolled into one and his son i'll be when he first met them yrs ago he never thought it would end like this but he had to they betrayed him

  • Jeez,, a four second burst of fire, thats like 40 bullets to kill a guy 3 feet away,, he would be falling down at 1 second.

  • AWESOME movie- one of my favorites!

  • Sometimes the critics get it right for me sometimes they'll say a movies good and i'll watch it and it'll bore the hell out of me then sometimes i'll watch what they say and i'll be glad I did this is one of those movies im glad i did

  • I wouldn't listen to the critics, to be honest, them guys probably just jump o the bandwagon. I have never heard how well this film has done ( or how not well it has done) and I am quite enjoying it, regardless of what any reviews said. It leaves me to watch it with a clear mind.

  • that's somthing to keep in mind but the reason i take the critics advice is because 100s of flims are released every year and i can't go watch every one of them to see which one is good so i rely on something i trust is tellin me the truth sometimes i don't wait on the critics and go see something i been wanting to see anyway. like i said some of them don't know what their talkin about anyway cause the flim will bore the hell out of me

  • I know what you mean, Its probably best to find a critic who you see as having a pattern as liking the same films as yourself.

  • Yeah but im not gonna rely on one critic who get's it right most of the time 'cause what if he's just 80% right i rely on a feeling as well as the critic telling me it's good and u know what? i think that it aint just the flims i like i think that when i enjoy a flim i think the majorty enjoy it too

  • His son should have died looooong ago

  • that's called fillin you full of lead haha

  • It seems Sam Mendes likes rainy scenes and that too on endings. Its kind of symbolic meaning that all sins committed by Sullivan been washed away in these final moments. Even in American Beauty the climax was on a rainy day....it seems to have errie and sad feeling and coldness of death

  • If I was Rooney I would have given up my son.. espically the way his son is..

  • dont you understand? parents love for their children is stronger than anything, as you know if one lose a child he will be impty inside forever.

  • the scene where michael jr. is waiting for his father will stay with me for ever. it is so beautiful!!!!!!!! magnificient movie!!!

  • Paul Newman was a awesome actor

  • He means that he is glad that Tom Hanks was the actor to play this role and not someone else. ;-)

  • Yes - He means he's glad that Tom Hanks' character was the one to kill him, not someone else. Newman's character knew the dangers of the life he chose and that he could be killed by anyone - he was just glad it was Hanks.

  • man i love this movie! definitely in the top 5 for me...anyway i always thought when he says "i'm glad it's you" he meant that he's happy that his death was at the hands of someone very close to him...just a thought.

  • @hairyguy23 I think that he means, that he is glad that his own sun didnt murder which he would have done.just another thought;)

  • I love this scene but I think people misinterpret it's meaning. When newman says "I'm glad it's you." I think he means he is glad that Tim Hanks character will survive and not connor. With him dead there will be no reason for Capone to keep connor protected.

  • All the good movies are always underated =(

  • does anyone know what song is being played when sullivan aproaches rooney at the car before he is gunned down. it is just so damn memorable. thanks

  • It's called "Just the fella" or "Ghost". It also plays when Rooney is telling Michael Jr. he's there to pay him what he owes for the game of dice they were playing at McGovern's funeral.

  • The whole scene with the rain and the music and the gunfire. To me it's like a piece of art that has come to life. Like a picture that tells the story. And the lines "Im glad it was you" just beautiful. just a beautiful and poetic movie.

  • Paul Newman at his best; Tom Hanks was the cherry on the top! =)

  • Jesus, that's ten great minutes of cinema there.

  • Why can't some of them take cover behind the car during the shooting? Considering that these men were probably among the best in the country, that's pretty lame.

  • They had no idea where the gunfire was coming from, or how many gunmen they were facing. Remember when Rooney tried to open the door and found it locked? They didn't just started staring down the street, they started looking in every direction. They only could see what was within a few feet of them because they were standing directly underneath a streetlight. Hiding behind the car would have been pointless.

  • What do you mean they had no idea where the gunfire was coming from? They could see the gunfire/flashes and they obviously knew where the shots were from since they all responded by facing Tom Hank's direction and shooting in that direction. I think taking cover behind the car would be the only chance any of them has got and its pretty far-fetched that none of them realised this.

  • exactly!

  • They are so dumb instead of hiding (which I' m glad they didn't 'cause they didn't need to protect a man who can't seem to understand that his son murdered two people that were way better than him) they shoot it out with no cover that's what happpens to most murder victims they don't think and meet their doom

  • I like the way people dressed back then. The way hanks is dressed. My late father still wore clothes like that up till the early 1960s. The felt fedora hat and long wool coat. People dress like total dooche bags now, no class, no love of quality things

  • My thoughts exactly! The way of dressing in this movie (as in, in the time this is set in) is very nice, gentlemanly and somehow so more more sophisticated than nowadays.

  • the 1930s was the most beautiful era for clothing and fashion. It will always be my favorite

  • It seems Sam Mendes likes rainy scenes and that too on endings. Its kind of symbolic meaning that all sins committed by Sullivan been washed away in these final moments.

  • so hard for him to kill rooney .

  • so many great scenes in this movie... why is this film so grossly underrated?!

  • @arnabc2003 cuz people are stupid and our taste in things our going down the toilet.

  • @arnabc2003 It's not that good..

  • @arnabc2003 cos people don't have great film taste like the 242 people who liked this film!

  • @arnabc2003

Because unlike The Godfather, Casino, etc., Road To Perdition showed the effects of violence on the person causing it instead of showing graphic murder scenes. Notice that you don't hear gunshots when Michael Sr. kills (L)Rooney's men, and when he kills Rooney, you don't see him die, you just see how hard it is for Michael to kill him.

In a documentary about this film, they mentioned that they wanted to show the impact of the murders on the ones committing them.

  • @arnabc2003 cuz it is bitch shut up

  • Sullivan thinks that revealing that news about the whole accounts of dead men thing will make mr rooney give his son up...what is he thinking?? its his son...he wont end his life just b/c he stole from him...its money...u dont kill ur son b/c of money...Sullivan dosnt understand that...as a father

  • Yeah, but he understands that Connor's a dick.s

  • i know that he knows that....but he still wouldnt just kill him.....

  • "open your eyes!, this is the life we chose, the life we lead, there is only one guarantee, none of us will see heaven"..man i love that bit..

  • @mattman694 listen to the band, kataklysm, and the song, ambassador of pain. they use that line as the intro.

  • @mattman694 That really is a great line. I'm bummed that I have not been able to find it on dvd or blu ray anywhere.

  • and the police are......where??

  • wow another youtube gangster go read a crime novel or somethin and try to be what u pretend to be bitch

  • this is 1930's chicago the police are paid by the mobsters to not do anything and no one else is going to call them cuz theyd get killed you have to remember chicago was run by the mafia at the time when the FBI came into play it all changed

  • Wow, theres nothing more fascinating then listening to 2 gun assholes talk about guns.

  • 5:45

  • yeh its a 21 tommy, sure.but how far back is he? it looks good in th world of holywood brother but it aint realistic i assure you,

  • a tommy gun at that range? no fuckin way!they couldnt hit a barn door from 20 yards!

  • Thats the thompson modle 21 named after 1921, the year it was made. Its a heafty weapon and heavier weapons have less recoil which makes them more acurate, Its fed by a drum mag and has a RPM of 800 plus . The RPM of a weapon is rounds per minet, so letting off at least 800 .45 cal bullets ever 60 seconds can do what he did. in the real world if you have ACUALy fired one you would know that you could do that easily. Its not like a videogame. Trust me that was realistc

  • I honestly got to agree with ya, if ya ever seen "deadliest warriors: gangster episode," or some other shows were they test the Tommy it has good accuracy. True, they were ment more as spray and pray weapons, and the distance looks long (compliments of zoom lenses) but they aren't worthless at distnce

Besides Sulliven could have just been drawing a line across the bodyguards, he may have been missing ten out of the five bullets that hit they're mark, and he would still have plenty of ammo .

  • guns make bad people go away

  • sometimes guns make good people go away

  • sometimes guns make problems go away

  • tom hanks was made for the tommy gun, i.e saing private ryan

  • wow very sad to see him shoot his father like that could never pull the trigger it would be too hard no matter how much i hate him you know. great scene!!

  • they were catholic, so its not like they werent going to hell anyway

  • no doubt the best tom hanks movie ever

  • damn that is some stone cold shit.....if someone guaranteed me i wouldn't be going to heaven i'd be praying day and night

  • Perfection. No other words.

  • His stupid as shit son got him killed!

  • word, shouldve handed conner over to sullivan while he still had the chance

  • 'I'm glad it's you.'

    What a beautiful sequence.

  • great movie

  • Why didn't anyone tell me this movie was a 10. Are there any more this good out there that went as unnoticed as this one did?

  • well its not the same as this movie nor does it contain the same actors, but you should definitely watch Running Scared, great movie but is also unnoticed.

  • Thanks, I'll look for that one.

  • L.A. Confidential is awesome

  • Tom Hanks is the best guy to put a gun on his hand. :D

  • 0.34-0.38 Paul Newmans face is priceless

  • Michael "The Angel Of Death" Sullivan.

great movie, graphic novel was amazing as well.

  • My ex girlfriend used to say i reminded her of Tom Hanks, that was around the time of Forrest Gump and routinely reminded me of it LOL....Mmm..Hope she saw this movie.....Life is a box of chocolats indeed!

  • 4 once a murder scene were there r actually witnesses..every other movie the streets r always empty n wet during a wild shootout n cops never come

  • Sounds like wishful thinking on your part...

  • lol go0d one
