People that take movies and pick them apart with impossibilites, asks questions and points out flaws. Youll never enjoy the movie as much as everyone else...
This is no doubt the most compelling & gripping scene in the whole movie, as this is my favorite Irish gangster movie of all time ((& pretty much my favorite gangster movie period, right up there with the Godfather part 1 & 2!))! Spectacular indeed!
That scene in the rain has to be one of the most utterly mesmerizing, compelling & superbly filmed scenes in film history. Just like EMUmonster wrote above, this "piece of art that has come to life." For, just like he wrote, this movie was indeed very beautiful, very poetic. This masterpiece!
@sugercoatedvenom You're closer than you think. One of cinematographer Conrad Hall's ideas was to replicate the feel of paintings by Edward Hopper. Check out Hopper's work; the link is very clear. Two great masters of imagery.
@DaBhoy1916 check your grammar. did you know that the godfather and goodfellas are both in the top ten best films of all time according to AFI? it's true. road to perdition is an outstanding story but i would not try to top the godfather if i were you. you will get strange looks from others.

@EdjeBos It might not be that. The story feels reminiscent of a Red Dead Redemption feel. Granted, not the same story, but that edge, almost brevity of dryness to both feels like it needs to be taken like sips of strong tea. It's powerful, but it requires some restraint on the part of the audience.
@PandarenSpartan give me a break. it's a total set up. tom hanks plays the same sort of personality type that he portrays in other movies - like 'You've Got Mail'. He's the same guy. But in this he's a cold blooded mobster who murders people to 'put food on the table'.
At least the other characters (like jude law) are realisticly twisted and unethical.
'Sips of tea' or 'sips of denial'. If the audience didn't like his character the movie wouldn't succeed.
5:43. until the end of this part of video.Christ what a sad but brilliant scene.7:56."I'm glad it's you."Horribly sad as sullivan looks at john rooney before he kills him knowing it was the only way,and rooney knew it also.
I figure it's because he'd rather be killed by Hanks (Whom he regarded as the Son he should have had). Than his other son Craig who had plans to usurp the old man's position of power anyways.
I'm not particularly religious, but I'd be interested to hear what those who are feel about characters like Sullivan, Rooney et al. Are they truly and irrevocably barred from heaven? Sullivan, as much as he seems like a good and caring father, is still a criminal and a murderer. Do his actions on behalf of his son absolve him?
@goofygoat2009 If that bothers you, you sure came to the wrong place. If you care about grammar, spelling, punctuation, or any of that stuff, reading the comments sections on YouTube will make you want to fucking hang yourself.
the sad part is that in the end he had to kill the man who was his father figure, boss and mentor all rolled into one and his son i'll be when he first met them yrs ago he never thought it would end like this but he had to they betrayed him
Sometimes the critics get it right for me sometimes they'll say a movies good and i'll watch it and it'll bore the hell out of me then sometimes i'll watch what they say and i'll be glad I did this is one of those movies im glad i did

that's somthing to keep in mind but the reason i take the critics advice is because 100s of flims are released every year and i can't go watch every one of them to see which one is good so i rely on something i trust is tellin me the truth sometimes i don't wait on the critics and go see something i been wanting to see anyway. like i said some of them don't know what their talkin about anyway cause the flim will bore the hell out of me

I love this scene but I think people misinterpret it's meaning. When newman says "I'm glad it's you." I think he means he is glad that Tim Hanks character will survive and not connor. With him dead there will be no reason for Capone to keep connor protected.
It's called "Just the fella" or "Ghost". It also plays when Rooney is telling Michael Jr. he's there to pay him what he owes for the game of dice they were playing at McGovern's funeral.
The whole scene with the rain and the music and the gunfire. To me it's like a piece of art that has come to life. Like a picture that tells the story. And the lines "Im glad it was you" just beautiful. just a beautiful and poetic movie.
Why can't some of them take cover behind the car during the shooting? Considering that these men were probably among the best in the country, that's pretty lame.
They had no idea where the gunfire was coming from, or how many gunmen they were facing. Remember when Rooney tried to open the door and found it locked? They didn't just started staring down the street, they started looking in every direction. They only could see what was within a few feet of them because they were standing directly underneath a streetlight. Hiding behind the car would have been pointless.
What do you mean they had no idea where the gunfire was coming from? They could see the gunfire/flashes and they obviously knew where the shots were from since they all responded by facing Tom Hank's direction and shooting in that direction. I think taking cover behind the car would be the only chance any of them has got and its pretty far-fetched that none of them realised this.
They are so dumb instead of hiding (which I' m glad they didn't 'cause they didn't need to protect a man who can't seem to understand that his son murdered two people that were way better than him) they shoot it out with no cover that's what happpens to most murder victims they don't think and meet their doom
I like the way people dressed back then. The way hanks is dressed. My late father still wore clothes like that up till the early 1960s. The felt fedora hat and long wool coat. People dress like total dooche bags now, no class, no love of quality things
My thoughts exactly! The way of dressing in this movie (as in, in the time this is set in) is very nice, gentlemanly and somehow so more more sophisticated than nowadays.
It seems Sam Mendes likes rainy scenes and that too on endings. Its kind of symbolic meaning that all sins committed by Sullivan been washed away in these final moments.
Because unlike The Godfather, Casino, etc., Road To Perdition showed the effects of violence on the person causing it instead of showing graphic murder scenes. Notice that you don't hear gunshots when Michael Sr. kills (L)Rooney's men, and when he kills Rooney, you don't see him die, you just see how hard it is for Michael to kill him.
In a documentary about this film, they mentioned that they wanted to show the impact of the murders on the ones committing them.
Sullivan thinks that revealing that news about the whole accounts of dead men thing will make mr rooney give his son up...what is he thinking?? its his son...he wont end his life just b/c he stole from him...its money...u dont kill ur son b/c of money...Sullivan dosnt understand that...as a father
this is 1930's chicago the police are paid by the mobsters to not do anything and no one else is going to call them cuz theyd get killed you have to remember chicago was run by the mafia at the time when the FBI came into play it all changed
Thats the thompson modle 21 named after 1921, the year it was made. Its a heafty weapon and heavier weapons have less recoil which makes them more acurate, Its fed by a drum mag and has a RPM of 800 plus . The RPM of a weapon is rounds per minet, so letting off at least 800 .45 cal bullets ever 60 seconds can do what he did. in the real world if you have ACUALy fired one you would know that you could do that easily. Its not like a videogame. Trust me that was realistc
I honestly got to agree with ya, if ya ever seen "deadliest warriors: gangster episode," or some other shows were they test the Tommy it has good accuracy. True, they were ment more as spray and pray weapons, and the distance looks long (compliments of zoom lenses) but they aren't worthless at distnce
Besides Sulliven could have just been drawing a line across the bodyguards, he may have been missing ten out of the five bullets that hit they're mark, and he would still have plenty of ammo .
wow very sad to see him shoot his father like that could never pull the trigger it would be too hard no matter how much i hate him you know. great scene!!
well its not the same as this movie nor does it contain the same actors, but you should definitely watch Running Scared, great movie but is also unnoticed.
My ex girlfriend used to say i reminded her of Tom Hanks, that was around the time of Forrest Gump and routinely reminded me of it LOL....Mmm..Hope she saw this movie.....Life is a box of chocolats indeed!

Rooney - There are ONLY murderers in this room! MICHAEL, open your eyes. There is only one gaurantee, none of us will ever see heaven.

@arnabc2003
In a documentary about this film, they mentioned that they wanted to show the impact of the murders on the ones committing them.

yeh its a 21 tommy, sure.but how far back is he? it looks good in th world of holywood brother but it aint realistic i assure you,
garyfromthebeach 2 years ago
a tommy gun at that range? no fuckin way!they couldnt hit a barn door from 20 yards!
garyfromthebeach 2 years ago
Thats the thompson modle 21 named after 1921, the year it was made. Its a heafty weapon and heavier weapons have less recoil which makes them more acurate, Its fed by a drum mag and has a RPM of 800 plus . The RPM of a weapon is rounds per minet, so letting off at least 800 .45 cal bullets ever 60 seconds can do what he did. in the real world if you have ACUALy fired one you would know that you could do that easily. Its not like a videogame. Trust me that was realistc
TheBhost 2 years ago
I honestly got to agree with ya, if ya ever seen "deadliest warriors: gangster episode," or some other shows were they test the Tommy it has good accuracy. True, they were ment more as spray and pray weapons, and the distance looks long (compliments of zoom lenses) but they aren't worthless at distnce
Besides Sulliven could have just been drawing a line across the bodyguards, he may have been missing ten out of the five bullets that hit they're mark, and he would still have plenty of ammo .
