Not having breaks all comes from track racing in the velodrome. They just ride the same set up on the street, which I agree is dangerous. But so are alot of things! Starting out one should always have at least a rear break. Front breaks can lock up on ya and flip your sorry ass, even though they do have greater stopping power.

I ride for the exercise, the bike forces you to always pedal. Also I swap out chainrings and cogs for harder workouts, like now I'm running a 52T chainring and a 16T cog. Yeah, It's a beast!!!
