When was the baroque era? Can you get new baroque bows or do you have to pay through the nose for an old one? I know that over 30 years ago some old bows were fetching $50 grand.
This is the only version i find with the correct tempo for the period it was written. The original has no time notanion but considering the period it was written this would be the most apropriate tempo. I get really annoyed when i see every single version in "largo molto"... why won't people research a piece before playing it... Thank you so much for this wonderfull interpretation. I believe this is the closest interpretation to what Pachelbel had in mind.
The history of why this piece was written is as reflective as the music itself. Truly a tragedy for the Pachelbel family. If I close my eyes it takes me back to my childhood when most of my family was still around and all was right with the world.Thank you for all the work you have put into this. It must have eaten a lot of time and a labor of love.
This piece was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo paired with a gigue in the same key. The gigue is quick and lively but not as popular (even in it's own day). The guitar-like instrument is a LUTE and was not in the original score. It sounds lovely though. The harpsicord was not in the origional score either, but paired with the basso continuio (cello) sounds like it could have been.
Most of Pachebel's scores were lost. Only a few copies of a few pieces remain.
@CerebrumLace The original score, which is in Berlin, *requires* a continuo group for the bass part, as do most baroque pieces. The organ (Pachelbel was an organist), theorbo and cello form a typical continuo group for Pachelbel. There is no harpsichord in this video, so no worries there! Well over 350 works of Pachelbel survive.
@Walvis2007 hang on 4 months ago you said there were only afew remaining then 2 months later you said there were over 350 no being picky and im ashamed to say that i dont know of any other Pachebel work;-)
@wowgoodtime A fairly complete list of Pachelbel's works is in the Grove dictionary, available at any good library. There are sonatas, scared works, works for organ and many more. Try a search for "Musikalische Ergötzung", for example--the chaconne in E Minor is very similar to Pachelbel's canon.
i have been searching al over youtube for the right version ....... and i finaly found it ( and i love that you play it at the right tempo, other people play it way to slow and it losses it authenticity)
It's one of those occasion when EVERYTHING just come together......and the result, SUBLIME!! I would not go as far as saying this is an once in a lifetime performance...but it would be close, it would be very hard to repeat even with the same musicians and instruments. Btw, love the baseline coming from that " Box".
This is the most beautiful music I have ever heard. I love this song. It is my most favorite classical piece, and everything put together here is just perfect. When I get stressed or just need to relax I listen to this song over and over, no lie. Just beautiful! Thank you for sharing your talent!
@katsandroses cant be, didnt you hear? bogdancomm and ttsm8144 said 'they went too fast" cant wait for "bogdancomms' 5th" or "ttsm6144 the 4 seasons" knownothing douches!
@hfxjerk oh, come on... I reckon Walvis are excellent musicians ;)
well, having a fast tempo... was just my guess. I listened to many Pachebel's Canon interpetations and it seems to me this one is a little bit faster than usual... maybe I'm too much into the J.S. Bach approach, but don't remember myself claiming I'm a connaisseur...
lol... my 5th??? this is a real good one :)) think I'm not even able to hum "twinkle twinkle little star" in a proper way... :D
Inclusion of a lute makes the highly artistic distinction, sonorous affinity between a theorbo and organ was well admired by Biber, Schmelzer, Pachelbel, Bach and like. I learned to play harpsichord years ago in my youth but I knew that I could not compete with a lute in term of sonorous quality that a fine lutenist is able to embellish the entire piece with intelligently chosen timber and resonance. I really envy anyone came to that far height in artistic endevour in learning to play a lute.
WOW What an emotional time machine. Even the setting looks like from long ago. It is amazing even when the composer is long gone, we are able to hear his beautifull creation, and he is able to share with us something that only music like this can bring.
What is it about the setting that's "like from long ago"?
True, it's a late 17th c. piece being playing on period instruments. But the SETTING itself, i.e., the room, the furnishings, the hairstyles and the costumes are surely not "from long ago." The SETTING is surely from this century.
What is the remarkable about this performance is that it's the real deal, not one of those romanticized arrangements that are barely recognizable as 17th c. music.
I don't know why people are so amazed by the corrupt and noisy guitar version when this is probably the most beautiful I ever heard this, I just love the two violinist plays it so heaven. By the way I plack rock too on guitar, but I have respect for classical music and try not to "hog" it out.
This is as beautifull as music can get, I mean it is like being in heaven. I wish I had learned to read music well and played a violin or something. I don't even like hearing guitars.
There are THREE violinists playing this CANON for THREE voices and basso continuo.
BTW: You cannot play this piece on a guitar or on a piano. You could only play a very reduced arrangement that completely lacks the canonic interplay. At most you would only be playing only ONE of the 3 violin parts plus bass line and/or chords. The result would not even be a canon.
The camera tends to focus on the 2 violinists to the left of the organ, which might encourage the misconception that it's just 2 violinists and what -- a viola player off to the right of the organ? LOL
But as I pointed out, there are 3 violinists.
Each plays exactly the same music, just not at the same time. V2 is 2 measures behind V1. V3 is 2 measures behind V2 and 4 measures behind V1.
It was an interesting challenge to record this piece, because there are three equal violin parts, plus three continuo players: cello, organ and theorbo. When we put the three violins together, there was not enough separation in the voices, and when we put the continuo behind a line of three violins there was no communication in the ensemble. So this was the way it turned out.
There was an additional factor, which is that the canon is designed to "reveal" a solo part by using accompanying thematic material in one place and a nice riff in another. The solo is only "revealed" when the the first two parts have played the "riff" material and then move on to the accompanying material: the placement of the violins allows this solo to be seen and heard clearly at 1:37. We felt that it was an integral--and brilliant--part of the composition.
@benzackry We like violas, and we use them in our performances. The original score for this piece calls for three equal violins. You can see baroque viola in some of our Bach arias.
Yes, the audio quality is much improved, and the video expands nicely to full screen. A big step forward for music performances which, until now, could only really be seen locally.
Except a 3 part canon for 3 violins and continuo probably can't really be played by 1 person on a piano, except in a very reduced arrangement that basically plays only 1 of the violin parts, perhaps 2, plus the bass line and maybe some chords.
you really have to get a few minutes into the peice to appreciate the raw talet of theese ladies on sting
