Has happened before in other towns and cities, and will become a much more frequent event. Winters are colder and drier, summers are hotter and drier. Inland there is no moisture, trees and bushes have died, and winds pick up loose soil and take it 100s of kilometres to the coast.

I think it should be mentioned that the first set of Youtube footage was taken in Broken Hill the day before at about 3pm. The storm over Sydney was the aftermath of this.

Was pretty amazing i live in brisbane and we only got the aftermath of sydneys dust storm it hit us around 10 am was real trippy LOOK like the End of The world lol
