@joseph yet to check that one out,and amiga isn't really a home console it's a pc alike thing.considering consoles the genesis had the rawest yet nicest track in it despite it's weakness i like the genesis it's soundchip as one of the best maybe it's just the guys that made the music coun't instead of the limitations.
The Gens I use has been updated several times, lately (mostly adding support for TASing SCD/GG games, and the like, as well as more accurate and stable savestate capability for SCD (which was buggy, pre-gens10))
Open source does not mean that it is magically better maintained. It just means everybody can tinker with it. Without official releases, you have 1 billion forks all with different feature sets and barely any improvements, and absolutely no standards inbetween them.
Kega already does scd savestates, has more accurate sound, better compatibility, SVP emulation, SCD+32X emulation, and so on. It is a better emulator.
Um.. Kega doesn't support full input movie playback.
And yes, people DO tinker with it, but forks aren't such a bad thing: more source means more to work with.
The difference, I suppose, is what you're looking for. I'm looking for TASability for all four pre-sat consoles, in one emulator. Gens does that (GG, Gen, SCD, 32X).
There's a massive pile of improvements, if you're willing to look for them... I can't make Kega better, but I can improve Gens to be exactly what I need.
I could link you to the version(s) I'm using, so you could evaluate against my statements, if you'd like. I DL'd Kega, but it didn't have proper recording options that I need, though it did have a higher speed throt option, which I found convenient, and I may well put into a personal build of Gensmovie.
Gensmovie10a is the best version of Gens I've found, aside from a sonic-specific build created for speedrunning testing and the like.

Thanks for the advice but I just got the new Kega that does movie recordng and is working very well. Might redo this or something..

Kega is a low-maintenance project that is almost never worked on.
But I'm happy you found something that works better for you ^_^
Aitamen 3 years ago
Kega may be low maintenance, but even then it is way more accurate than Gens.
That, and Gens got 1 official update in the last 5 years.

um... it's OSS, why would "official" matter?

I suppose that's fair if you don't need actual emulation improvements (sound for example is hideous in gens).

What version of Gens are you talking about, btw?
