The mans the guid for a' that.

The honest man tho' er sae poor

Is King o' men for a' that

    The man o' independant mind

He looks and laughs at a' that

Truly the work of a prophetic genius. In this world of coofs and fools this poem which I can recite of by heart is like a rock in the tempest.for me. Thanks for posting

  • Dear Lionel Thank you so much for your version of this poem. It's the best one I've ever heard, without any useless ornamentation, simply from the bottom of the heart.

    Well Done and nice kitchen

  • bro robert burns f&a.m

  • Well done Lionel. Being a fellow Scot it's good to hear a Scots song being performed properly. Usually it's by Americans that get Irish mixed up with Scots :-) Great stuff

  • Lionel,

    Its tom

Greetings from Curacao an a' that

    Fantastic amigo!

    Mines a pint!

    T

  • Whenever I go to a fancy party the first thing I ask is "where's the haggis?"

Great rendition. 5/5. Oh, and nice kitchen.

  • The true spirit of Burns... a wee man in his kitchen getting annoyed about the 'high heid yins'.

The haggis munching, fancy party goers will never understand the true spirit of this great nation. Great version of my favourite song mate.

  • The true spirit of Burns... no kilted haggis munchers at fancy parties... just a wee man in his kitchen telling it like it is.

  • This song gives me chills every time I hear it.

  • Sadness, death and despair, the fire continues to burn our beloved land. Help from all over the World pours in, strangers helping strangers...this calls for another dose of Lionel belting out the Great Rabbie anthem....and not in a stadium, or a patronising concert..a standard bloke, in a standard kitchen..we need this on prime time here...Greetings again from down under..Still struggling but we'll get there! She'll be right mate.

  • anyone know these chords?

  • Lionel was nice enough to give my the chord so thank him. D Bm G A7 Asus4 A

  • Lionel was nice enogh to give me the chord so than him. D Bm G A7 Asus4 A

  • Wonderful! Hope you're enjoying Burns 250!

  • Great stuff. Happy Burns day

  • A song that sums up that we are all equal, regardless of race religion or culture.

    Happy 250th Birthday Rabbie Burns.

  • it makes you so proud, so proud to be scottish x

  • Absolutely great! enjoyed your singing and the song and the sentiment.

  • lovely version xxx

  • happy robert burns day, all my wonderful socttish friends! i wish i was there with you eating a veggie haggis, but alas, im suffering in the tropical sun here on the big island of hawaii instead..

  • When I heard this sung at the opening of the the Scottish Parliament every hair on the back of my head stood up. I want it to be our national anthem,I can imagine Hampden in tears as they sing it...

  • Great stuff. Makes me proud to be Scottish

  • Lionel, magic as ever. Last time I heard you sing this was when I requested it from you in the Clachaig Inn in Glencoe when you were there with Black Eyed Biddy last autumn. Could you possibly do your rendition of Oor Hamlet. I think it would go down a storm on utube.

  • fantastic rendition, your voice has a great tone

  • Lovely!!

  • Hi, I just wanted to say that this song, more specifically, your voice singing this song is very nice to have. When things are tough and I don't know what to do, I just think of you singing this song and then it isn't so bad. Thanks.

  • Hello TG just to let you know that our rendition of "A man's a man..." (a-la Lionel McClelland) went down a storm at my brother's 60th in Cape Town a week ago. It may be posted on Youtube soon. Hope it does it justice and is not too embarrassing!

  • Hello TG just to tell you our rendition of "A man's a man..." (modelled on Lionel's version) went down a storm at last weekend's family gathering in Cape Town. There may well be a posting on Youtube showing us in action, so watch out for it. Hope we did it justice!

  • hey jockconn, thanks for letting me know. im looking forward to seeing it and hope you will post it as a video response.

  • beautiful. i love it.

  • Seriously you have a fantastic voice. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Brilliant! I have a brother who's celebrating his 60th soon and this video has inspired myself, another brother & our sister to serenade him with "A man's a man..." at the party. The final words ("That Man to Man, the world o'er,/Shall brothers be for a' that") are particularly apt. Let's hope we can do it justice!

  • hey jockmconn, thanks for the comment.. i was glad to hear you found our work inspiring, and would appreciate having you as a subscriber.. i do have two other robert burns songs posted... all my best to your brother for a great birthday.

  • Thanks,TG. Every time I listen to it, I appreciate it all the more! Please pass on my compliments to the artist.

  • top notch mate!they should get you to sing that at half time at hampden!

  • Very good. Thanks for posting this.

  • we had to recite robby burns song at our burns lunch, it brings back memories

and well done great playing and errr..singing?

  • You should come to the U.S. and sing at highland games and Scot Feativals. You're really that good and aul thaat!!

  • Love this song, and sang really well and with such feeling, excellent guitar playing too.

  • Every now and again on Youtube you find Gold!

This in one of those times...Eureka! A standard bloke, in a standard kitchen belting out pure Gold! Love it! And Burns wouldn't have it any other way...Greetings from Down under. This one goes straight to the Poolroom aka Favourites.

  • thanks for your compliments.. i was just telling another filmmaker about this shot.. it was gold, lionel and i had met about 1/2 hour earlier and this was our first take..

check out the rest of my work too,, think you might find a few more gems in there..

  • lionel ain,t no standard bloke!!

  • @nudenuts A great post, and a The Castle reference; super!

  • Fantastic, do you guys do gigs at pubs etc? Im just along the road from you guys (Selkirk) and wondered if you'd be interested in playing? Also do you have the music for this as Ive been searching everywhere for it!!?!!

    Keep up the great work

  • Fantastic rendition of one of the finest Scottish songs.

  • Beautifully done. (This coming from an America who just returned from holiday in Scotland) Thanks for the great music.

  • God Bless The UK, Empire, USA, & Israel!

    God Save The Queen!

  • I think you've missed the point. Read "A Parcel O' Rogues" or look on youtube for "The Corries - Parcel O'Rogues"

  • G'on yersel son, guid stuff!

  • Wonderful. I have no other word to describe it.

  • What an outstanding version of an outstanding song. Good on you.

  • very glad that our work is being enjoyed around the world.. now if you guys could all just send me and lionel 1 0cents for each view that would be great.

  • Kind of goes against the spirit of the song, but ok.

  • One of my favorite songs. Thanks.

  • I love this song so much. I just wish I had the right accent to pronounce the words correctly, I was never brought up knowing much scots, so it's hard.

  • Loyal Scotland in the UK FOREVER!

UK, Empire, USA, & Israel Forever!

    Sir Walter Scott was RIGHT!

    No Surrender!

    God Save The Queen!

  • Calm down all you arguemens!

Bravo Lionel Mac! Wonderful! I'm truely inspired to learn more about Robert Burns. Thanks from California!

  • I couldn't help but post a contiunation on this as I read over it again. As we are all related. All brothers and sisters on this planet of Earth. Responsable for its care universally. Why is it that we....(As the famous series "Narnia" would say)..sons of Adam and daughters of Eve, are fighting so much. Would it not be more positive for us to all work together under one banner? Not so much under a government. But a gigantic family working together to improve the planet. Utopian? yes...but still.

  • I have to agree with Sett. While my response is delayed. What are we but fellow men and women of this Earth? Indeed we have our differences in skin, views, dreams, etc. But isn't that just a way for you to find people you share compatability with? Not a way of labeling and segregating your fellow man. So the next time you praise the name of one god. Or show your loyalty to one country. Think about what it might be like on the other side. You might see something you didn't see before.

  • This song makes me very proud to be Scottish. never ceases to bring a tear to my eyes. The artist pays a wonderful tribute to Buns what a great voice. would like to see him at the Scota

    one night

  • SAORSA

  • I agree with Liozzo, good rendition!! and thanks for the wonderful text. Rabbi Burns was a Scotman, but it needs to be born somewhere on Earth to be a man and the "Patria" is beloved by everyone, but it is less important than the our common humanity. We are brothers.

  • Burns is for all humanity and for all the ages. What a beautiful clear voice, and such a nice, strong rendition. Thank you!

  • i have to admit, im having a little trouble understanding the argument going on in these comments.. cant ALL countries be good? does loving one country a make another bad? i dont think so.

  • hey, have you ever been to New Foundland in Canada? you should visit sometime. I think it will be worth your while.

  • Scots are yearning to have the identity we deserve as free men and independant.. Is that so bad to want? Scots don't have a superiority complex, its just love of heritage lost and love of all humanity. FREEDOM!

  • thanks for chiming in here.. i agree with you.

  • Agreed. It's not wrong to want to belong to your your own country, remember that until the last century or so, scottish people weren't even allowed to speak their own language. It's still not allowed in many schools today, since english is the only language taught.

  • i totally agree with you.

  • Brilliant thanks for posting Soar Alba

  • U . S . A

  • nice

  • well done my brother

  • UK, Empire, USA, & Israel 4ever! :)

    Loyal Scotland! :)

    God Save The Queen! :)

  • Your sense of understanding of this song is as weak as your sense of humanity! "the man o'independant mind, he looks and laughs at a'that"

  • LOL -- He's looking and laughing at YOU, BIGOTTED IDIOT! :)

    LOYAL SCOTLAND FOREVER!

USA, UK, Empire, & Israel FOREVER!

    GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!

  • If you have nothing good to say about this excellent vid or Burns why bother commenting at all??

    Bigot???? WTH???

  • thanks for your input.. i am actually enjoying this rather lively discussion on this video.

  • good work mate, whats the chords you use?

  • good stuff

  • UK, Empire, & USA Forever!

    God Save The Queen!

  • get off the uk empire usa god queen stuff

  • LOL -- You are a SHEEPSBUM!

    LOYAL SCOTLAND FOREVER!

Go Back To Saudi Arabia, Lassie! :)

  • i wish you were the man you say you are, or claim you are. maybe one day i`ll spout a few truths,,or half truths eh!

  • Great. As an ex-pat Scot living in a country like Germany where values such as honesty, dignity, integrity and fraternity are at the very most the object of lip service this poem by Burns is a continues source of inspiration pride and strength. It is the essence of scottishness and I have no reservations in having a copy in large print hanging on my office wall.

  • absolutely brilliant

"...man to man, the world o'er

Shall brithers be for a' that"

  • cheers mate, you have noved me, this was the first song i played when i returned from scotland

  • cheers mate, this was the first song i played on me guitar when i was first relieved of duty from afghanistan, you have moved me mate, keep on playin laddie, abd by the way, beers on me some day

  • A moving song!!

Watch our Burns' supper 2008 in Spain, and rate it please!

  • Happy Burns' night to everyone, Bro Robert Burns will never be forgotten, wha's like us Rabbie?

  • how scottish of you..ha ha..

  • hey robert burns fans, tell me what you are doing to celebrate, and dont forget to watch our ode to a haggis..

  • Going to be a simple night; read some Burns poetry and reflect on life and his view of it as it relates to mine. No drinking (that's for March 17th lol), but if I can get my hands on some haggis I'll chow down (neeps and tatties too)

I wish everyone a happy Burns Night!

  • i really wish i could be over there with you guys celebrating..ill be thinking of you all day..

  • Fabulous, thanks so much for sharing this!

  • Absolutely brilliant.

Composed and delivered with conviction. Burns would be proud of this performance that captures the simplicity and power of the words.

How good are Burn's words? This moves me and makes me proud to be a Scot.

'Flower of Scotland' has its place - but as Scots we are not simply men with a chip on our shoulder. No, we are 'Men of Independant Mind' and we need to broadcast this to the Worls as our National Anthem.

    Fantastic again, in the extreme.

  • shall brithers be for ah that!!

  • your the man my good man,

  • ill second that.. three cheers for lionel..

  • Just brilliant!!!

  • great song i can't wait for the burns supper here

  • Excellent! Good for you.

  • This is an awesome song, though I'm not Scottish, I feel proud! LOL!

  • Awesome song! I love Rabbi' Burns.

Help me out though, what a coof, and what's gowd?

  • A "coof" is an idiot or fool -- it may be related to the word "goof," but I can't say for sure.

    "Gowd" is "Gold."

  • goof is just a take on goofy the disney character im sure.

  • bravo! :) luv it!

  • shame nah naer did our rabbie hang his head in shame rang he looks and what ad a honest man what and thow he wiz persicuted by the church fur being a randy sod! he did love the ladys you understand now do more research and you will understand where hes comn from Gojogongua and yes wee love him

  • anyone have the tab/chords for this version?

  • D Bm G A7 Asus4 A

  • i love that he's in the kitchen.

and i adore the acapella ending.

yay! my appalachian roots are strong!

that does it; i'm headed to the hardly strictly bluegrass festival in san francisco to get my fix!

  • HELP!! can anyone tell me what the first line means? "Is there for honest poverty that hangs his head and a' that"

    great song well done!!

  • Is there someone, who because of being poor for understandable reasons, hangs his head in shame?

That's what I get from it. I was confused by this first line too when I tried to translate the song for my bonie Ashley.

  • Right! The honest man is higher than the corrupted society!I loved this version of a true hymn!

  • This is one of my favorites... I listen to it over and over and over again!

  • This is one of my favorites... I listen to it over and over and over again.

  • EXCELLENT!!! =) ...Mr. McClellend does a good male singing version of this lovely song, methinks. ;-) Cheers Tara! =)

  • that was fantastic, would have brought a tear to a glass eye

  • Burns was far ahead of his time with his humanistic and social ideas. Great rendition of this influential song which inspired the German revolutionary poet Ferdinand Freiligrath to write a poem to the same tune and in the same spirit that was well-known in the German revolution of 1848.

  • Class! Excellent performance of one of my favourite songs. 5 Stars for that my friend.

  • Brilliant !

  • I love this tune,good job

  • Very Nice!

  • winner announced!ephend has this to say:

A man is one who stops to help another without a second thought. A man is one who works for his family and friends without a care in his heart. A man is one gives to all and fights for what is right. A man looks upon many things in this life with a faith that burns deep in the soul. The trick in this life is learning what a man should be not what society has made them become. And with all this a man is an honest man who's word is always enough.

  • beatiful song, and beautiful singer.

  • how do u get featured

    how!!!!

  • its one of my favourite songs and you reminded me of my dad when you sang it. Thank you.

I wish more people would take time to learn what Robert Burns' poetry & songs actually mean. Especially Auld Lang Syne. Hopefully your vid being featured will help people think :)

  • this is great very talented go you:D

  • Well it's

    Social Man versus materialist Man;

    But prior to that it's

    Spiritual Man versus worldly Man;

    But prior to that it's

The Noble Savage versus civilised Man

And prior to that it's Humanism

Based on an 18th century ideal:

    Fine sentiments but worrying.

  • good to see you featured again..best of luck..tooth

  • Nice :p My mum was born in Moffat o.O
