Just watched the movie "Tree of Life." This piece figures prominently in it. Wonderful to watch and listen to you play--it made my day. The movie--very watchable and very weird.
In my opinion this is the VERY BEST guitar version on youtube of Les barricades mystérieuses - F. Couperin. Very impressive! One of my favourites! Thanx, Fix Nicolet!! :-))))
He plays this with elegance and beauty like French-Baroque music is supposed to be played.. You can feel how much he loves playing. His trills are beautiful and delicate. Other than being in a different key it is very much like the original for harpsichord. I hope mine gives it the same justice. Thanks Fix for an excellent rendition and performance!
"Barricades" is a recent discovery for me on the radio at home, and now I'm an addict hunting it down!. Congrats to Nicolet on a superb and soulful rendering. A perfect example of what attracts me to classical guitar in the first place. Onto the Favorites list you go... :)
The first time I heard about this piece of music was when I read the book "Imprimatur". It is displayed as a piece of music which enchants you and make you happy. And it truely does!
@guitarslim56 - You're nitpicking. While "rondeau" may be more proper given that this piece is French Baroque, yet it is still essentially in rondo form, more or less ABACA. I don't know that it's worth quibbling over. Fix - Thanks for the upload...nicely played at a good tempo.
"Rondo" and "rondeau" is the same word. The second one is just the french form of the italian "rondo". But the meaning of both is the same: one refrain interrupted by several couplets. However, as the great Couperin was French, it seems to me that "rondeau" is more appropriate here. That's just an insignificant detail.
Very, very nice !!! I used to play this a long time ago (the Oscar Ghiglia transcription). My playing wasn't nearly as good as Mr. Nicolets. Thanks for posting, man!
you are such a true musician! i love the way you work the difficult hand moves to your musical advantage and make them sound like purposeful rubatos...brilliant!!
This is a superb rendition of Les Barricades, Mr. Nicolet is very talented and I wonder if you have a CD out? Thank you for this interpretation on youtube.
I first heard this piece played by Wanda Landowska on harpsichord. Alas, I am very old. It was said that Madam Landowska played the harpsichord better than anyone played anything else. Her virtuosity was staggering and her tempo of "Les Barricades" was perfect to the ear. And unheard again by me for perhaps fifty years. Until now. M. Nicolet, your performance was magnifique and deeply appreciated. You are a wonderful artist. Many thanks.
Excellent job. I first heard this on a Christopher Parkening album, You do it justice. My only suggestion is to play it with a little less fingernail. Or, perhaps, wait until your strings have settled in a bit. :D
I doubt that F Nicolet would ever take your advice into account. His interpretation is extremely well balanced ( tempo and sound). This is a work for harpsichord and it is well rendered on the guitar.
Interprétation simple, directe, sans manières, mais sensible et intelligente. Vraiment très, très bon !! Le mystère de cette pièce magique n'est pas dénaturé.
This is a favourite of mine, having heard it many times on the harpsichord, played by my husband: you play it beautifully too, thank you. Also good to hear such a pleasant tempo - it is often played too slowly :).
You must read "Imprimatur" by Monaldi and Sorti. The Rondo "Les Baricades..." plays a role in this book. But the Rondo is accredite to Francesco Corbetta in this book.
This is just so well done. I first heard John Williams playing this on a very old poor cassette recording that my S. African Anglican choir director gave me - I was travelling to a woodshop in Hertford area of NC, USA at the time. The tune just blew me away. I've since learned to play it. I like to think that the barricades are a serious of life's obstacles that, with persistence, hard work, and determination, are being overcome.
Great playing, is this your own arrangement? Did you have to cut anything from the original to make it feasible on the guitar?
To answer the question about the baricades, I think its reffering to the trim around the bottom of ladies dresses, the Baricades that hide the mysterious underneath!
fascinating !!! Your rendition is simply amazing ... with just the little hesitation Scott Ross used to put into it .. mysterious .. can anyone tell me what the barricades were ??? hehe .. anyway 5 ***** and thanks nicolet !
I constantly find myself returning to your video just to listen to your interpretation. I'm naturally very coldhearted but I find that your video melts my heart time and time again.
Your rendition of this piece is so beautifully done that I find myself coming back to it again and again, simply to hear it playing on my computer while I'm working - or even, for that matter, when I'm not.
I am a lover of "period instrument" performances, and this may well be Couperin's best harpsichord piece, perfectly suited to the instrument. BUT: when I saw and heard your performance, I thought bugger those period instruments, this is an outstanding performance that can serve as a prime example to all self-declared baroque specialists! Well done!
The only person I haad heard play this before was Parkening ("Parkening and the Guitar")--your performance was lively and refreshing --but a bit choppier compared to his. Thank you so much for showing us the fingering!
I might go back to lessons just to learn this song.
And here I was, convinced that only the harpsichord could do justice to this one my favourite pieces of music. Your interpretation of this is simply outstanding, thank you very much for posting it.
Les barricades mystérieuses was a favorite of a late friend of mine. He used to play it on harpsichords that he built. This interpretation brought tears to my eyes. It was as close to my friend's interpretation as I have ever heard, even though the instrument was completely different.
Well done :)
