I suppose if you are GIGN you will have at least one person and probably your entire team behind you if you encounter the shooter close enough to disarm him. It seems that the gun disarm the instructor teaches only deflects the threat behind him and to the side...probably where his pal is standing... and does this video say that GIGN uses Krav Maga?
I've always thought they looked cool wearing those...And yeah its to protect the face from frags. Another thing is, I guess some speical forces just have like a "distinct" feature. Like the SAS wear gas masks almost all the time and so I guess the GIGN wear visors.
yeah I mean if I'm gonna be in the spec forces, I want something that stands out and looks baddass. green berets got their green berets, spetznaz got their red berets, the 707th "white tiger" spec forces of south korea got black berets and overall black wear, SAS got gas masks usually, GIGN got visors, etc.
Our Delta, HRT, and DevGru uses the same principle. It just happens to be a nomex balaclava with goggles. I am almost positive it is because they ride flashbangs into rooms and shit flys everywhere and it would burn their faces. Think about it. They use shaped charges to cut mouse holes in walls...

Those "gay visors" protect them from frags, and other stuff. and Yes, they do use gas masks when its needed.

they also protect against 9mm bullets ;) many european special units use those visors.
