  • Thanks so much it only took an hour to wrap my Tsuka my pointer is to use an end cut (trimmings of Ito) insted of paper that what I did and works great and tapping the knot with a small hammer makes sure the ito dosnt move. but thanks again really helpful wish i could show a pic

  • PAPER?? WHY THIS LITTLE PAPER THERE???. Please, ask me.

  • last time I tried to do this, I didn't have a needle, and it was REALLY hard

  • Great videos thanks! I can just picture me already extremely flustered puncturing my thumb with the matress needle, the knot unraveling before hurling everything at the wall lol

  • this was a great help, a good step by step tutorial.

  • I just did my Boken, thank you VERY much for the info, it was very helpful. Since there is no slot at the top, I drilled a hole instead. Came out GREAT !!

    Thanx again !!

  • would super glue work to?

  • Hello Hyoujinsama, I found this tutorial series VERY helpful. I have practiced now on about a dozen tsuka and I'm ready for the real deal. BIG problem. I can't get the ito through the kashira. The opening is very small. Is there a secret? This is a re-wrap so I know it went in before. I'm afraid of damaging 50 bucks worth of ito from Fred Lohman. If you could help that would be great. Thanks. Marty

  • @MARTYSBOATWORLD: I know this is 4 months ago...but here goes. Just do what you did with the needle and thread. Thread it through the kashira; should not be a problem UNLESS the kashira was meant for, say, 7 mm STRETCHED ito, and you have, say 11 mm STRETCHED ito. By "stretched," I mean that if you've got some good quality ito, when you stretch it the width will decrease a few mm.

  • Thank you so much for this video, very clear and easy to follow - helped me complete my first tsuka-maki!

  • i want to swap my cotton wrap with leather. do you know a good company to buy that from or does it matter?

  • @irnlxkjoe: Try tsunami ito or silk. If you're not familiar with leather, it's VERY tricky to work with. Plus, sweating during kata/tameshigiri will cause your tsuka to be very slippery. Go tsunami if you want something different but don't want silk.

  • HELPFULL!!!!!!!:D

  • I would like to do a wrap on my Bokken. Given the nature of a bokken (which is made in one piece) the handle is not a separate part of the sword. Thusly I can't fold the ito above the handle (as you're doing in this vid w/ the end-knot). If I were to do this on a Bokken, should I do it reversed instead? I.e. with the knot being made at the bottom of the bokken-handle?

I appreciate any helpful responses in advance.

  • @berg89dk You can tie it the same way as this. There is a style known as itomaki-kake no kashira where the ito actually goes over the kashira instead of through it. When you cross from the ura knot to the omote knot, wrap it over the end of the bokken tsuka and make another crossover, then go to the other side and tie the omote knot. Does this make sense?

  • @Hyoujinsama "... wrap it over the end of the bokken tsuka and make another crossover, then go to the other side and tie the omote knot." By this do you mean that I should make another "X" as you do all over the handle, before I start tying the omote?. It seems to me it should all be doable on a bokken, reversed of how it's done on an actual katana, which (in my head) your comment confirms :P

    Thanks for the help.

Also where did you get red ito?

  • @berg89dk: That's low-quality shoelace run-of-the-mill ito. Most likely nylon or some other synthetic material. Good for a tutorial, but nothing else. If you want red silk ito, try Japanese Swords Ltd or Ryujin Swords. Simple google search should suffice as well.

  • @berg89dk you could also get away with adding a Fuchi onto the Bokken.

  • i have been looking for a video like this forever

  • Would "the needle and thread tool" have been used in the day?

  • even though the knot came out a little rough that video was extremely helpful!

  • THANK YOU

  • Thank you very much, Kevin, for your professional advise, it's been really very very helpful and it now that I'm done with my first tsuka. You have plyed a big role in this saga of mine: tsukamaki!

    Thank you once again!

  • ok i tried this keeping it as tight as i could but it came out rly bulky im not sure like how bulky it should be but im just un sure of it

  • very good it helped

  • nice rice glue (^_^)V. thank you for sharing the technique.

  • how to make rice glue? could you tell me? thanks

  • Love your stuff Kevin!

  • This video was a great help, arigato gozaimasu hyoujinsama....

  • what would be a proper length ito be for a handle?

  • Ive heard you measure the handle in inches then add 4 and thats how many Feet of Ito you need, So if its a 12 inch Hadnel, youll need 16 ft of Ito. I can't varify that its exact but is what I was told.

  • ugh, i am not looking forward to this, i have good dexterity but that's almost super human.

  • Follow this and you will be good to go. I did one before seeing this and shoving the ito through with a trowel was a pain. After seeing this, I've done 4 of my katana. This makes it so much easier. I thank Hyoujinsama again.

  • Fantastic. This is great stuff. Following written tutorials with bad drawings ached my brain. This is perfect! Thank you!

  • cool that is awsome

  • Glad you like!

  • could you share your sources for materials?

    particularly your same and ito

also... is there a problem using different sizes of ito? namikawa has 8mm and 10mm ...

was hoping for somewhere closer to closer to home...

  • Hey man, how about that video on how to correctly wear a daisho? <_<

  • Holy smokes...I completely forgot. I'll do that asap.

  • cheers kevin, saved me some hassle, just finishing off a katate ito maki on a sword Ive refitted and couldnt remember how to do the ura knot correctly

  • Glad it came in handy!

  • A excellent video. Its a pleasure to see your fine sword skills and maintenance displayed in such vivid graphic detail. Arigato

  • Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoy the vids.

  • excellent again.

    5 shuriken stars.

  • Thanks, Master Park!

  • 50/5

    simply the best :)

  • Haha! Thanks. ^_^ There are many better, though.

  • Man you are a great teacher Kev, another big thank you as always.

  • Hey, Mark! Nah...I just like to talk.

  • Thank you very much! Even though you make this look easy to do I guess it's one of those things that takes a lot of practice to get it right. Hmm! I'd better start practicing. My father recently passed on a trophy sword that had been unwrapped in the 50's. Luckly all the bits were retained and it would be something to get it back to something like it's original state.

Thanks once again for all your video's, they're great!

  • Thanks for watching! If you want any info on the sword, let me know.

  • Thanks again kevin.....this video is very helpful.....next you should do one on the paper wedges lol. But I thank you soo much for your videos. They help out alot. Keep going bro!

  • Thanks, James. Finally got net back after almost a week, it seems. x_x

  • I'm gonna need both of these vids in the near future... please keep them up. :)

    Thank you

  • Glad you like it, Kris!

  • great vid, 5/5. cheers!

  • Thanks, bro. Glad you liked. ^_^

  • Very nice tutorial Kevin!

    I enjoyed watching it.

    5 stars!

    God bless you!

    *bow*

    angela

  • Thanks, Angela!

  • Thanks kevin! you know i been waiting on this vid

  • Glad it helped, bro!

  • Thanks again !!5++

  • Thanks for watching!

  • Great video. That mattress needle sure looks like it makes things easier than the way I have done it in the past. I really must get one of those.

    Thanks for the great idea!

  • Same here. I used to push it through with a pick, but this works so much better.

Don't thank me! Thank Thomas Buck! I got the idea from him. ^_^

  • great job!

    5 shuriken

  • Thanks bro!

  • oh btw. you said "omote is the side, that faces away from your body, when you're wearing it" but is it not left and right?

  • Omote is front or outside, and ura is inside or back. This describes (in this case) to the blade orientation with the body being the point of reference.

Is that what you mean? Or like hidari (being omote) and migi (being ura)?

  • Thanks! That explains it :)

  • Good job Kevin I will try it when I finish my first Tsuka, but first I need to finish the tanto I think it will be ready for the next week.

  • Sounds good. Best of luck! I you need any hints, let me know. ^_^
