i found out about marillion back in 1989 thanks to my friend. always loved marillion. with or without fish the singer .... i do miss fish but good band..
@MetalJassim I didnt' noticed the bad reaction :P the truth is that this isnt a bad song, it's catchy, but the rythm guitar sound reminds me Charlie Burchill's playing... cheers
@edgroove7 Simple Minds are my favourite band. Charlie is awesome! In my first comment (that has been "censored" by the way) I said that the sound reminded me of Simple Minds and Charlie's playing. Just that! It wasn't well received I guess ;) ... This is a fairly good song, but I haven't been following Marillion lately. H is a great singer and his first 2 albuns with the band are wonderful, but I didn't payed much attention afterwords. shame on me...
I only discovered that they were still going but with H about 2 years ago.I love this version much better and the emotive writing and singing of Steve. Nothing wrong comparing Steve R with Mr Burchill as they both play for the song and add subtle touches of melodic beauty and atmosphere . :)

Steve Rothery is without a doubt the greatest guitarist the masses have never heard of. His playing is so smooth and so emotional. Marillion are without a doubt one of the greatest bands EVER. Bar none. Always over looked. Great songs, emotion and master musicians all of them. Fucking brilliant.
Hello from NY. I saw Marillion w/Fish in 86/87 for the "Clutching at Straws" tour. Its probably my favorite concert ever. I was Steve twice during the "Season's End" tour. I preferred the Fish show. Since that time with so many years and songs with Steve I believe they are equally amazing live. Thank you Fish. Rave on Steve and all.
An amazing song off an amazing album... See the band twice live... Steve Rothery is such a talented guitarist! Love the emotion in the lyrics and music of this song...
Dominik Diamond was pretty scathing of this song in the Daily Star : "You're Gone. So's Fish. Some Bono wannabe sings instead. Terrifyingly bad." Iguess some people will never get over Fish leaving, eh?
@MALONEYCAMFIELD It's Dominik Diamond, it's The Daily Star. Ergo, their opinions count for nothing.
I don't read The Daily Star - in fact, I wouldn't use it to line my budgie's cage ( if I owned one ) - so I'm spared Mr D's critiques on popular culture, and I cannot begin to imagine the ways in which my life is the poorer for this. The day he contributes something positive to humanity I may change my opinion of him, until that day I'll remain in blissful ignorance of his shitey spoutings
Ahh... this song and Marbles overall remind me of sunny days in 2004 being an exchange student in France. Sometimes I wish I could revisit these times.
A vast departure from past ventures. But this works! It's Marillion gone upbeat contemporary wile style maintaining their unique style. NO ONE can pull this off...but for Marillion.
I have loved Marillion since 1984. First album (well, actually it was a tape) I think I knew every word to was Fugazi. I forgot about them until a friend of mine dragged me to see them in Philly a few years back.
Or :Lies, Lawrence, For Today, Coming of Age, The Hour Candle, Hopeless Anger, Straight to my Heart, Rose of Sharon, Mother Road, Sasquatch, Drafted, Fox Hill, Ice, and basicly all the other Camel songs. At least from Nude and onwards.
This is very nice. You should try Camel who are the most underrated band in the world. Start with "ICE" although it only goes down from there as it migtht be the BEST SOLO EVER
Thank you for the suggestion, it certainly is beautiful music and I will have to look further into that! I think it's about the first time I have gotten a suggestion like this which was actually useful :)
So... weird. This is a really poppish song. But.. wow. I mean, in pretty much every pop song, its the same chord progression over and over again. This is so.. different. I mean, random chords you'd never string together. Plus it changes keys. Like, 3 times.
I'm guessing you like Porcupine Tree from your Username - If thats the case, I suggest you buy MARILLION's BRAVE album sometime soon - If you like this and Porcupine Tree, you'll love it.
In Sweden we have a saying, that something is like "cursing inside a church" when you say something that is taboo or voicing an opinion that is a sure "NO NO". My view on the H/Fish thing is maybe something of that: I love M with both F and H, and some of the things I love most is (here it comes!) Fish material - with Hogarth singing it!!!!
Before you say anything, check out 'Sugar Mice' and 'Warm Wet Circles' with H!
Yeah, I agree... I'd much rather see a multi million pounds video by Girls Aloud singing Hickory Dickory Dock than this proper genuine talent any day!?! lol
It's amazing how strong an impression a man can make - Fish hasn't been part of Marillion for 20 years, still the issue "Fish-era or H-era?" is frequently raised. Marillion with H has been around for more than double the time of Marillion with Fish, could we drop the subject by now? Even if Fish would've stayed the band would have evoled into something different (or split up!) since the late 80's, so it's rather irrelevant now.
Fish has a distinctive and unique voice. But after hearing muliple songs with Horgath at vocals, I have come to the realization that the true sound of Marillion comes from the basist and guitarist.
I guess as a Yank I have a different take on Marillion than the British Faithful. I grew up with them when I had the privilege to grow up in England. I remember they were the most different band that I had ever heard. I saw them twice with Fish-Donnington was one of those concerts. Haven't seen Steve. But either way, they are a treasure. A national treasure for Britain. Such Emotion, such talent. Brilliant.
2 right i dont see H bottling it after they manageed to get so big thts y i think Fish left scared coz of the success and he says H has gt no balls he should look at him self but i do lyke his stuff
Marillion with H. in front is STRONGLY underrated !!! I have been a true fan of Marillion (both with Fish and H.) since ´82. I still love it all. And who plays the guitar better than Steve Rothery ???
Agreed. Also, I think Marillion has superior intra-band relationships. Marillion are mates, good buds, pals. They never seemed to get lost in the fame game the way Waters, Gilmor and Barrett did.
these aren't they type of band I'm into, but why aren't they still big? This is far better than any of the stuff getting airplay and video play by younger bands of this ilk. I understand this was a top 10 hit just by selling to their own fans....should have been even bigger.
Who gives a shit about fish!!!!!????? Marillion did great things with fish, but my God,nothing of that era compares with Brave, Sunlight, Radition, Marbles etc etc. Bury nostalgia!!
Yep! It is not the same without Fish! Marillion has moved on. I hardly listen to Fish era Marillion anymore but I still love it. I like how Marillion has moved on and contiune to do different things. I listen mostly to recent Marillion. I just saw one of their gigs. Fantastic. Hogarth is an amazing singer and lyric writer. Get some of the recent albums and listen to the songs and the words. Hogarth does not just sing the words but expresses them. Brilliant!
Steve Hogarth is wonderful! I love to watch and laugh at myself for being so completely swept away by everything I see him in - live, interviews, music vids - in this he is ethereal, sexy and powerful all at once... [rolls eyes at self, I can't help it]. I cannot wait for new his H-Natural tour dates to be announced!
Steve Hogarth is awesome and so are Marillion. Forget Fish folks because that is soo 1988! This song going to 7 in 2004 was fab! Video is a bit ropey but the band are brilliant with H

quite interesting this new sound.. i have been with marillion since their first record, and has gone through some changes, but they still rock it big time... many many years to come with many success..!!
