Ok, but really now, the world has seen the tall thin white boy with a sunken chest dance. And they do alright, but here, Baryshnikov has not only a wonderful jump, he also makes it look easy. The dancers nowadays ( I am one of them) never jump with the same height or grace, they just look tired jumping mabye 5 inches off the floor. And even if that last jump Baryshnikov made looked a little off, he made it look great at the same time. Carlos Acosta is good, but Baryshnikov sets the bar.
yeah, at :55 he seemed to open up to son or something..Not sure..but briliant is brilliant!!! I would never be able to quite tell for certain unless he said he made a slight error!! Carlos is a brilliant dancer..but Misha is the touchtone fot that level of dancing. A dancer such as Misha elevated things to point whre Costas exsist..RESPECT!!!
Baryhsnikov has always had the most incredible leg strength of any other dancer who ever lived. And because he's "petite," he has a Peter Pan-way about him. The man can fly.
But here, he's more masculine and rugged than graceful. He doesn't really soar. Maybe this is supposed to be a more powerful moment. So he foucs on his way... not just his ability to leap about.

yeah you probably would boo if you saw that from a principle in a prestigious company.you see better 15/16 your olds at the prix de lausanne in todays dance world
if i saw what? an amazing feat of dancing? actually, i'm pretty sure i'd cheer! i realize that the dance world (especially with regard to the sphere of ballet) has increasingly become more interested in athleticism than artistry, thus the performers of the past look 'archaic' or 'average.' well, maybe i'm old fashioned, but i like ART with my DANCE and so, i'll stick with baryshnikov.
fair enough, and i agree to certain point, ballet has become more of a athletic sport then an art form on the technical side and those young dancers you see in competitions like the prix are very schooled but many will learn the artistic side of things once they join a professional company.baryshnikov is a true artist and like nureyev changed the world of ballet, especially for male dancers
baryshnikov was great for his time but ballet like sport has progressed to such a level dancers from back then look pretty mediocre and average by todays standards
baryshnikov, although an amazing dancer doesnt even have a natural body for ballet in comparison to dancers like caros acosta and tomas edur
if you think baryshnikov is so mediocre by today's standards, I think you should be taking a look at a video where he actually does insane things. Like this one:
Search "Barishnikov DQ ABT variation" in youtube and the word "mediocre" won't even touch the deepest part of your subconcience.
The man is flying :-o amazing.

There are no dancers that you are lauding today without dancers like Nureyev.
He opened up in the West all the 'danseurs' skills upon which all others who came after him built.

I agree check Misha at the same age as Costa or any other dancer and then SIT DOWN!!!

great, however that last jump was oddly sloppy. I'm not even sure what it was supposed to be.

Brilliant dancer and brilliant mind.
I am so greatful to have lived in a time where I could experience such a dancer.

I think this is amazing, not average even by today's standard. I enjoy watching Baryshnikov more than the current dancers we have now.
