Yeah, you also forgot one of the lesser known villains, the poacher Percival McLeach from "The Rescuers Down Under", he looks like Frollo on steroids, kills rare animals for profit, kidnaps and tortures a young boy to find out the whereabouts of a rare bird, then tricks him into showing where the bird is, and finally (attempts to) feed him to the crocodiles for pure sadistic pleasure! He's 2nd to Frollo in my opinion! And he's real! Pretty much a Disney version of "The Joker"
What makes him so monstrous is that he's realistic.Someone like Frollo existed.There's no over-the-top nature, there's no indulgence in one's own villainy, there's no grand scheme of world conquest. He's not based on a concept, like 'gluttony', he's based on more or less, a true persona that really does happen in the real world.

Being born in 1984 I was a kid during Disney's revival in the Early and mid 1990's and at the time, Hunch Back was among my least favorite. Now as a 26 year old who studied a lot of Medieval European history and who loves all things Gothic and neo Gothic, Hunch Back is my favorite adult self's favorite movies ever, my favorite Disney movie from the 90's and one of their best, deepest, richest and most visceral films.

Look at it this way, Frollo can ride a horse, use a sword, and do many things other Disney villains do, but Frollo does them all in a dress/Snuggie/robe-thing. Frollo is awesome.
"Ballsy" is the only way to describe a Disney movie tha5 actually sends it's villain to hell at the end (well, its a rather obvious metaphor). Like most people who still have an inner child, I can enjoy just about any movie that Disney produced up until "Tarzan". But this movie actually makes it in my top 5 of any genre/all time (next to movies like A Clockwork Orange and Bruiser). Disney's portrayal of Frollo is to thank for that.

@OiTheChris Also what is interesting is how in certain ways Disney made this a bit "darker" than the novel itself. Yeah, they had to edit the deaths of Quasi and Esmeralda, and the dark sexuality (barely), but nowhere in the novel do I remember Frollo's "Final Solution" (as seen in the Palace of Justice scene with the ants). Needless to say, at 6 years old, I was frightened shitless by the first 5 minutes alone...luckily rewatching it at age 10 made me realize how fucking great it was!
Frollo is i think one of the most human out of all the disney villans, he shows us the evils of bigotry and the all consuming hatred people have for those who are different. he lusts,he kills, he uses the power appointed to him from the church to fullfill his own selfish needs. he is the personification of all our sins and fears. the scary part of this character is not how he does so much evil, the fact that so many others in real life have done so similar.
Frollo is a clinical sociopath. Read the diagnostic criteria for Antisocial personality disorder and it fits Frollo with chilling accuracy. Makes you wonder if Disney did research into it.
i like both frollo's. i love how in the disney movie he is evil but in the book he is just troubled by his lust for Esmeralda and he even blames it on god. he is a brilliant, epic, dark, and complex character ever, definately the best villain book or movie ever

Notice how realistic he's drawn? Wrinkles and a snooty face. He's also really really big: tall and broad. Disney animation put a lot of love into this character.
Frollo is the most complex villian because he's the most realistic. He's a man who thinks he's pious and good, and is disturbed by his sexual attraction to a "loose woman." Not an unfamiliar situation, at least in the time of Victor Hugo.
in the disney world, yeah frollo is the darkest bad guy, but in all the character who were made up, of all time, I would say sephiroth is the most EVIL bad guy, because he wants to destroy the world, kill people without a friggen emotions, and want to destroy the world with a friggen meteor. second, would be darth sidious whatever you spell his name. mind control, kill for his own reason, and actually escape justice. third, FROLLO =D awsome

Judge Claude Frollo is not really a villain.
He is more of a misguided-character.
He genuinely believes that it is his religious and God-given duty to wipe out the Gypsies and finds no wrong in doing that due to his religious convictions.
Just like Inspecteur Javert from Les Miserables who firmly believes that the end justifies the means to ensure that justice is served.
I'd agree that he is misguided character as well, except for the fact that he is lusting after a woman (when the Bible clearly states that lust is a deadly sin; plus he sung a song devoted to that fact) and bargained Esmeralda's freedom from the stake in exchange for sex. Esmeralda's death warrant isn't soley because she is a gypsy/wanted, but because she refused Frollo's advances. The book is even more graphic.
I think the difference is that Frollo acknowledges what he is doing is wrong, but he just doesn't care. In facct, he blames God for his lust for Esmeralda (in Hellfire, he says, 'If in God's plan/ He made the devil so much stronger than a man'). He has some ideas of justice but is perfectly willing to sweep them aside so he can have his way. Mostly, his religious views are a cover for his greed and evilness.
OMG you would not think he was completely evil if you read the book. It is soo sad!!!!! He is like 30 years old, he SAVES QUazzy and is not really mean! Disney got it alll wrong oMG! he is my second favorite character! After Pierrie of corse =D
I did read the book and I really liked the interesting transition. I think Frollo is the best Disney villain, but I agree that he isn't a villain in the book; he is just a troubled man who makes bad choices. Disney movies need villains but they managed to give him good development, depth, and complexity, and of course has the best Disney villain song, and downright best Disney song, ever.

Frollo is seen as 'so evil' because he is one of the few villains in the franchise that isn't comical. At all.
A lot of villains are either really stupid or just have personalities that make us laugh at them. Frollo is very serious and has serious views, therefore he's more frightening than villains like Captain Hook or Cruella.
Scar is another good example. However, he has the hyenas who bring in that bit of comic relief to his plot....kind of like Jafar and Iago as well. A lot of the worser villains have dimwitted sidekicks that make us laugh at them.
I think Scar is a badass only in the sense that he is the only Disney villain who managed to kill a good guy. After usurping the throne, he just turns into a prissy puss, and he has his henchmen to do most of his dirty work.
Shere Kahn is what Scar would have been like if he didn't turn into a primadonna dictator. Shere Kahn was raw, but also suave, which is why I think Shere Kahn is more villainous than Scar, personally.
In a sense, I agree. Shere Khan strikes fear into the entire jungle just by walking around. And he certaintely seems more arrogant and cunning. Scar is just jeaous of Mufasa, and probably wouldn't be that big of a dick if it weren't for jealousy. Plus, its clear that Shere Khan has killed many a time before.

@xlefreakcestchic I'm inclined to agree.I think what makes him really scary is that he's grounded in reality. People like this have existed, and what's more, they've been in positions of power to do what they pleased, which was oftentimes really horrible things in the name of their fanatical beliefs. I couldn't watch this when I was younger either, not so much because he scared me, but because I truly loathed him. That feeling hasn't changed much over the years, but he makes more sense now.

not quite to be exactly pea counting frollo DID kill quasimodo's mother in the pursuit on the church steps. Scar only abused Mufasa's weak moment and pushed him down the cliffs but initially never had the streangth nor the courage to kill him. Frollo however pursued the mother like a madman and grabbed a hold of her while she tried to get past him and pushed her so violently that she died when she hit the ground.

"Ballsy" is the only way to describe a Disney movie tha5 actually sends it's villain to hell at the end (well, its a rather obvious metaphor). Like most people who still have an inner child, I can enjoy just about any movie that Disney produced up until "Tarzan". But this movie actually makes it in my top 5 of any genre/all time (next to movies like A Clockwork Orange and Bruiser). Disney's portrayal of Frollo is to thank for that.

@OiTheChris Also what is interesting is how in certain ways Disney made this a bit "darker" than the novel itself. Yeah, they had to edit the deaths of Quasi and Esmeralda, and the dark sexuality (barely), but nowhere in the novel do I remember Frollo's "Final Solution" (as seen in the Palace of Justice scene with the ants). Needless to say, at 6 years old, I was frightened shitless by the first 5 minutes alone...luckily rewatching it at age 10 made me realize how fucking great it was!

Frollo is i think one of the most human out of all the disney villans, he shows us the evils of bigotry and the all consuming hatred people have for those who are different. he lusts,he kills, he uses the power appointed to him from the church to fullfill his own selfish needs. he is the personification of all our sins and fears. the scary part of this character is not how he does so much evil, the fact that so many others in real life have done so similar.

Frollo is a clinical sociopath. Read the diagnostic criteria for Antisocial personality disorder and it fits Frollo with chilling accuracy. Makes you wonder if Disney did research into it.

i like both frollo's. i love how in the disney movie he is evil but in the book he is just troubled by his lust for Esmeralda and he even blames it on god. he is a brilliant, epic, dark, and complex character ever, definately the best villain book or movie ever

And to all of you who are attracted to him, don't hate yourself for it. He's meant to be sinisterly attractive, that way the character sticks with you. A lot of Disney villians have an adult element to them that turns people on and it pulls you in. That's what makes them so dangerous. You want to be close to them like the hero is, and then WHAM! they strike! it's awesome. lol

Frollo is the most complex villian because he's the most realistic. He's a man who thinks he's pious and good, and is disturbed by his sexual attraction to a "loose woman." Not an unfamiliar situation, at least in the time of Victor Hugo.

Why does gypsies comitts so many crimes then? Some people have it bad from birth but they don't end up as criminals, while others have a fine life but becomes criminals its all depends on genes. I don't care if gypsies does'nt have any country i, they are from India from the beginning. Otherwise could people who likes gypsies take them home and . Judge Claude Frollo is not really a villain.
He is more of a misguided-character.
He genuinely believes that it is his religious and God-given duty to wipe out the Gypsies and finds no wrong in doing that due to his religious convictions.
Just like Inspecteur Javert from Les Miserables who firmly believes that the end justifies the means to ensure that justice is served.

I'd agree that he is misguided character as well, except for the fact that he is lusting after a woman (when the Bible clearly states that lust is a deadly sin; plus he sung a song devoted to that fact) and bargained Esmeralda's freedom from the stake in exchange for sex. Esmeralda's death warrant isn't soley because she is a gypsy/wanted, but because she refused Frollo's advances. The book is even more graphic.

I think the difference is that Frollo acknowledges what he is doing is wrong, but he just doesn't care. In facct, he blames God for his lust for Esmeralda (in Hellfire, he says, 'If in God's plan/ He made the devil so much stronger than a man'). He has some ideas of justice but is perfectly willing to sweep them aside so he can have his way. Mostly, his religious views are a cover for his greed and evilness.

I did read the book and I really liked the interesting transition. I think Frollo is the best Disney villain, but I agree that he isn't a villain in the book; he is just a troubled man who makes bad choices. Disney movies need villains but they managed to give him good development, depth, and complexity, and of course has the best Disney villain song, and downright best Disney song, ever.

Frollo is seen as 'so evil' because he is one of the few villains in the franchise that isn't comical. At all.
A lot of villains are either really stupid or just have personalities that make us laugh at them. Frollo is very serious and has serious views, therefore he's more frightening than villains like Captain Hook or Cruella.

Scar is another good example. However, he has the hyenas who bring in that bit of comic relief to his plot....kind of like Jafar and Iago as well. A lot of the worser villains have dimwitted sidekicks that make us laugh at them.

I think Scar is a badass only in the sense that he is the only Disney villain who managed to kill a good guy. After usurping the throne, he just turns into a prissy puss, and he has his henchmen to do most of his dirty work.
Shere Kahn is what Scar would have been like if he didn't turn into a primadonna dictator. Shere Kahn was raw, but also suave, which is why I think Shere Kahn is more villainous than Scar, personally.

In a sense, I agree. Shere Khan strikes fear into the entire jungle just by walking around. And he certaintely seems more arrogant and cunning. Scar is just jeaous of Mufasa, and probably wouldn't be that big of a dick if it weren't for jealousy. Plus, its clear that Shere Khan has killed many a time before.

@Scaltt yep. It's the only disney movie I couldn't watch as a kid because I was afraid of him. And what's amazing is he's not some powerful sorcerer that looks like the devil or something. He's just a regular (albeit psycho) guy.

@xlefreakcestchic I'm inclined to agree.I think what makes him really scary is that he's grounded in reality. People like this have existed, and what's more, they've been in positions of power to do what they pleased, which was oftentimes really horrible things in the name of their fanatical beliefs. I couldn't watch this when I was younger either, not so much because he scared me, but because I truly loathed him. That feeling hasn't changed much over the years, but he makes more sense now.

@xlefreakcestchic too true! Its so funny, when I started watching hellfire a couple months back, i noticed he and Mr. Harvey (the lovely bones) have many similar characteristics. I swear hellfire fits mr. harvey perfectly, and what really gets me is that could u think of the thoughts these two characters share! This sick lust, for women, it truly makes me furious with anger. And its down right and sick and disgusting, it literally pulls me to the point where im shaking in fury;frollo is sick!!!!

not quite to be exactly pea counting frollo DID kill quasimodo's mother in the pursuit on the church steps. Scar only abused Mufasa's weak moment and pushed him down the cliffs but initially never had the streangth nor the courage to kill him. Frollo however pursued the mother like a madman and grabbed a hold of her while she tried to get past him and pushed her so violently that she died when she hit the ground.
