It is shown here as ineffective and unlike Von Flue used it. Miesha Tate did it this way against Zoila Frausto and that is why she couldn't finish her with it. When VF does it he doesn't just sprawl. Go watch the video for the difference in technique.
Awesome move. Almost got a big wrestler kid in it but forgot to sprawl out before leaning into him to choke him. My base wasn't far enough out and he just flipped me over and finished the choke. Thanks for the video, helped me see what i did wrong.
The only problem with attempting this choke is the fact that when you press and sprawl it gives the man on his back the chance to get back to guard very easily. I have never attempted to finish this choke because I didn't want to give up side control.
**WARNING** This choke works extremely well. I have an upcoming fight and my coach recently taught me this after I saw that you guys posted it. I've used it 3x in class and have actually choked my partners out... They said that as soon as they realized they were getting choked, they were out. You sort of don't feel it coming until it's right at lights out. I suggest tapping as soon as you feel the pressure on your neck.
Hey Ari, I was rolling last night and tried this technique multiple times. When I locked up the gable grip my opponent kept sweeping me by pulling my head in and rolling me over. Any tips to keep base and finish the choke? Thanks buddy!
@np6796 bring your knees up to his ribs to base if you feel like he's going to power you over his body. And when you feel balanced you can start the 2nd half of the technique by propping up. I'm no instructor but i hope that helps man.
I'd like to ask since you were once a referee, have you ever been, or know someone who was punched/kicked by a fighter by accident during a fight or while a referee is stopping a fight?
i see it alot in UFC, fighters got soo dazed that they actually try to take down a referee, hehe hilarious!
@Submissions101 hey can u guys show a vid on how to finish the arm in guillotine?when i roll i always get my partner in it but can never seem to finish it.i just end up gassing my arms out and he eventually pops his head out.
@jas108 im no instructor so take this with a grain of salt but the guillotine is usually dont incorrectly by beginner students that like to muscle and wrestle their way into submissions. If you are on the bottom i suggest letting go and get back into guard. If you have your opponent in guard already make sure you have your forearm slicing into his neck and depending on which grip you use make sure your bicep is closing his other carotid artery. At the same time squeeze his body down wit ur legs
@mitsubishidiamante i'm probably wrong but what i remember you clasp your hands together behind the back of their heads and pull up so they can't get leverage or something.
@mitsubishidiamante the triangle is fairly easy to escape... or at least negate... what the triangle does it cuts off your carotid arteries which stops blood flow to your brain... (this is done when the arm thats in goes across the neck and the opposite leg wraps around the head)... so create some space and you should be fine... for the time being... this could be done by getting the hand thats on the outside of the triangle inside... that creates some space between his leg and your arteries...
@nizepart0519 what Matt Hughes did was not what we would call an "anaconda" choke. It WAS a head and arm choke but the set up of the arms was much different than an Anaconda. Look up his interview with Ariel Helwani and you will see.
i learned this from the man himself. jason got me into submisson grappling. he runs a class in fresno at fka. i must say he locks this up so fast sometimes u don't have a chance to let go of the guillotine.
@Quiston No, I don't think it's necessary as long as you still get your right arm under his left arm (or vice versa) as you see him do in the video. I'm not 100% sure though.
i find the Guillotine difficult to finish, i gas my arms out far to quickly any tips?, although i absolutly never try to get it from side control bottom. i instantly go into sweep/hip escape back to half/full guard...
this choke that you show in your video is brilliant so simple and yet extremely effective
@Quiston There are always tricks and tips to make the guillotine more effective, Marcelo Garcia is the master at it. Pedro Sauer also has some great tips on making it better.
@Submissions101 thanks for getting back to me, yeah i remember watching a video of eddie bravo talking about marcelo garcia and he was saying that his squeeze was sick!
When you have someone clinched up against the cage and you drop down to try for a takedown, a lot of people are quick to try to grab a guillotine. This is a great time to set them up for a Von Flue, since the cage allows you to control their hips and prevent them from pulling guard. You just have to make sure you are low enough on their hips or it can backfire and go pretty badly for you.
@LeedansParis You can say it both ways my friend...look it up on dictionary dot come. I realize the French use the way you suggested...that's cool too ;-)
@LeedansParis I can't believe I am having this discussion ;-) Ok, please explain why the dictionary has both pronunciations of this word in it? Merriam Webster has both. Some words are said differently around the world as they have been adapted in those countries. As is the case with words like tomato, schedule, or kilometer. If we can SAY both, then both are correct. A sheet and shit are different thank goodness.
I gave the sheet example because the French never say it right (ie; dog sheet).
It's a difficulty with pronunciation though.
You can say Royce instead of Hoyce if you want or Gill Lomy for Guillaume or Gee Off for Geoff but those are all mispronunciations. Guillotine is a French name and I gave you the correct pronunciation.
@Submissions101 Well it is a french word so technically he's right, but it can still be said both ways. I've even heard fight commentators say it the way you do.
@FightDiary Pay close attention to the trapped shoulder. There is a twist at the end of the move that makes the choke feel alot like an arm triangle. The trapped shoulder gets lifted up into the neck.
Awesome video, watched this and then hours later was using it at training to effect.
