In each prefecture should be built a measuring point for citizens (CRMS: City Zens' Radioactivity Measuring Station). In the measuring point the radioactive contamination of foodstuffs can be measured, as did citizens' initiatives in Germany after Chernobyl as well. The project are still lacking instruments. A gamma measuring station for measuring loads of food with sufficient detection limit today costs around 30.000, - €. Donations to IPPNW. First one is already installed in Fukushima-city.
"Clean energy" (ie wind and solar) account for about 2% of the power in the US. There are ways with the advances of science to make nuclear power safe and efficient. Wind and Solar (and tidal) are not sufficient. We need a mix of sources so the Middle East can't hold us by the balls anymore. The Middle East is a greater risk to us in the short and near term than nuclear power if we don't become energy independent.
Besides solar and wind there is now also tidal power. I echo what 'esextonags' wrote. What's it gonna take for people to wake up and put the big money behind the safe energy sources? So true. Dirty energy . Dirty players. Obama change your policy. Nuclear energy is not clean!

In Cumbria UK, the Lake District was offered up as a nuclear dump. This offering was made by five people - Cumbria County Council's Cabinet - outraged County Councillors were'nt allowed a vote.
Without a designated high-level waste dump (problem solved!!) the UK government's diabolic plan for new atomic power stations in this densely populated country would be impossible.
So called 'geological disposal' is the worst option for nuclear waste ...
is there a way to get the full song somewhere pleaaaase ?? , not that I don't agree with their opinion about nuclear stuff, but this cover has a killer sound !
Why would someone give GrogMyzer a negative rating on something that was not offensive but offered valid concerns? Anyway, how does everyone feel about POTUS' new stance on Nukes? Somethin' is happen' here again. They better make yet another video.
A Geiger counter reading reveals invisible radiation. Since the first atom bomb test in 1945, we all eat, drink and breath man- made radioactive elements. It's still there in the high atmosphere from the '50s and '60s. Yes...our DNA is already affected for generations to come! At least we should not pay for our own doomsday. Albert Einstein once said "Nuclear power is one hell of a way to boil water".
@theroyprocess why the focus on man-made radioactive elements? Since humans existed they've been eating, drinking and breathing natural radioactive elements. It didn't seem to be the end of the world back then and it isn't now.
I do not know much about nukes, but people 'round here have a FIT when a company wants to put up those wind turbines. They make "noise" they "flicker" and, well, I guess they don't look so good.
This just leads to the next step for everyone... We need a new way of thinking about our lifestyles. We think it's just fine to drive down the street 2 blocks to pick up a six-pack, but it's OK because we'll recycle the bottles, right? Wrong! We have to get out of the "Me Generation" attitude. It's time for a reform of the way we look at living. As one example: Work from home systems. This could save millions of gallons of fuel every week. If more companies would allow it. Thoughts?
I cant belive people are bickering b/w nuclear vs coal and/or petrolium fuels they are all pretty much 'dirty unsafe, and/or unsustainable' in their own ways. Geothermal, wind and/or solar are a few of the mostly clean and/or more sustainable options, oh sure them ugly ol windmills, or gawdy solar panels be here and there... but those don't 'melt' causing RADIOACTIVE fallout that can kill or seriously alter everything around it also solar has come a long way in efficency. (research Ovinshinsky)
nice putting 'radioactive' in all capital letters like that. geothermal, wind, and/or solar are clean, sure, but more importantly, they are by far insufficient to meet electricity demand. the more support renewables get, the more coal and natural gas power plants end up being built. check out the situation in germany if you doubt that.
But all you harvest is the heat. The nuclear decay is deep in the planet and beyond our control in any case. It's when we humans mess with the balance topside that gets us in trouble. Get some education on the subject you are speaking so ignorantly about.
They are NOT insufficient to meet the needs IF we would produce the tools needed here. If we keep importing crappy wind and solar components we will not meet the needs. But, if we start producing here, it solves several problems; need for energy better met, and need for manufacturing in the USA met. And, as I am sure you are ignoring on purpose, when you invest in a tech by using it, the tech gets better and more efficient and cheaper. How is this a losing deal compared to dirty energy?
Excellent video...in light of the recent nuclear leaks in France, (no, they didn't cover that in the news, did they! -sarcasm), we must demand SAFE AND CLEAN energy bills. Call your congressmen NOW and tell them NO we don't want this nuclear waste or leaks in our backyards - ever!
The leaks of last summer that registered a level 1 on the nuclear event scale that goes from 1-7? Yeah, we'd better play it safe and go ahead and think wind and solar will save the world while coal power plants continue to be built. Sort of like in Germany where they announced a phase-out of nuclear power to be replaced by renewables, meanwhile planning to build 26 new coal plants to fill the demand that the renewables couldn't possibly fill. I can't remember the last time a coal plant leaked.
Wait I just remembered, there was a huge coal ash spill in Tennessee less than two months ago.
Don't deceive yourself: nuclear power has two alternatives: coal and natural gas. Hydroelectric power is maxed out, and wind/solar/etc. are just a politically-popular myth. All things considered, nuclear power is clearly the way forward.
And I was a fan of all these artists... Besides dollars, they don't cite facts to support their assertions. Consider the harm of coal-fired power: CO2, acid rain, mercury, etc. Nuke has zero greenhouse gas emissions; waste has been successfully stored or reprocessed for decades. Hundreds of wind turbines or solar panels equal the output of a single nuke plant (we don't have unlimited land); turbines can damage bat and bird populations. Face reality - support clean & safe nuclear power.
Holy crap! Why not just say the world is going to end anyway and then it won't matter if we are all going to get cancer from the slow increase of nuclear particles in the air. So what if we have a meltdown. Chernobyl is just a hoax anyway, right? 3 Mile Island was just a little hiccup too. France was only a level one leak, so that only let a little more nuke pollution into our world environment. Fuck it. I might as well take up smoking cigarettes and shooting drugs into my arm while I'm at it.
GrogMyzer: Your senseless rant does not change reality. Although the Chornobyl accident was a devastating disaster, we do not use these outdated and dangerous plant designs. TMI did not harm the public. Coal plants pollute, harm the public and kill miners. Renewables are a good adjunct, but will likely never meet demand - you can't 10 kW from a 5 kW bag. Nuclear power is the safest and cleanest form of high-density energy - it will make a comeback as people become more informed.
Your scolding is not to the point, but I use strong words to express strong feeling from time to time. I am not a 12 year old, and can use "adult" language when appropriate and to express myself. There is no such thing as a "bad word" except in the mind of the highly religious. I, however, don't support or approve of censorship. I use language to forward my assertions and you should learn to as well.
I'm not sure who you mean when you say "we don't have it". The United States has 104 nuclear reactors, more than any other country in the world including France. We get 20% of our electricity from nuclear power, and have been for about two decades.
How do you think they pull the Uranium & Plutonium out of the earth? Coal & Petroleum.
What kind of energy is used to refine it for use? Oil & Petroleum.
What happens to Spent Uranium from power plants? DU Bullets.
How long is the waste going to be an issue? 800 human generations (at only 10 years that would be 8000 years of toxicity. Ever heard of Earth Quakes? What about Volcanoes? Perspective check: Last Ice Age melted down 7000 years ago).
Your 'reality check' is incorrect on a few points.
First, plutonium does not occur in the earth at all. It is produced in nuclear reactors.
Second, while mining operations will probably remain diesel-powered, nothing prevents the uranium enrichment process from using electricity generated by nuclear plants.
Third, DU is not the same as spent nuclear fuel. Depleted Uranium is the tails stream from the uranium enrichment process, meaning it is the uranium that has had most of the U-235 removed
The main point of my "incorrect" points is that despite the incorrectness I feel that I have made a valid point: Things can happen that will release the waste long before a 10K half-life is done. And that's just the first 1/2... Shall we just count on the end of the world and man and life in general when something happens 1000 years from now due to our (human race) irresponsible behavior in the world today? Changes can be made, and energy needs can be met with relearned lifestyles.
I disagree, and it seems that many people following this video and conversation agree with you more than I, however, the needs can be met if a new structure for power is developed. Farmers used to all produce enough energy to be self sustaining using windmills and that's about it. Given, power needs of even rural areas today are larger than back then, but again, life style changes are a key to how we can resolve the energy issues on us today. Nuclear plants produce waste. Where does it go?

So-called "natural" or background radiation will sicken, maim anf kill you, cause
permanent DNA damage as well. The late Dr. Gofman said, "there is no safe dose
of radiation". It took billions of years for the earth's radiation to subside enough
which allowed life and DNA integrity. Cancer rates are 1 in 2 today! A Geiger
counter will be common as a wrist watch!
You can not pretend anymore!

Ponder this:
-Nuclear power IS clean and safe, its much cleaner and safer than any petroleum energy
-Nuclear power has worked for 50 years, look at other countries who use it, the reason we dont have it is because certain political parties
-No where to put the waste? The Yucca mountain facility is safe and protected
-It HAS been proven we can protect the stuff.Numerous successful destruction tests have passed
-Dirty power and dirty players? If any power is dirty its petroleum and coal, not Nuclear
