you can break in a set of goalie pads in 2-3 really hard practices. They are a bitch though. It might be different for them because their stuff is custom, but for the regular store-bought pads, I was miserable through about a skate and a half.
I think it takes him weeks to break in new equipment but, once it's broken in, he will use it for years. MAF broke his finger about a month ago and had to get a special glove made so he would have more room in it. He had to break that in quickly, over a few days.
@angelinthepit13 actually a nhl goalie uses about 3-4 sets of pads and about 4 sets of blocker and catcher, plus having home and away sets. braking in equipment takes 1 week training everyday. then its good to go
