If you want to understand the real meaning of the movie "Eyes Wide Shut" then you have to bear in mind that Stanley Kubrick said, "Observancy is a dying art".
Notice how almost everything happens in the same one street (one street set) in the movie. It's based on the novel Traumnovelle, about dreams vs. reality.
@Boxingmagnet74 IMDB has it wrong. It's not Kubrick. This is according to Kubrick's daughter, who DID appear in the film. He didn't have the actor's impulse that other directors have. BUT!, he did supply the EVA breathing in "2001"! (Again, according to his daughter.)
When I look at Tom's face I can only see Christian Bale. Weird? Plus - I think if Bale had played the part - the movie would have been twice a scary and four times as powerful.
funny, because I always thought Bill Harford reminded me of Patrick Bateman. Must be the suits lol. And was American Psycho set in the same city as Eyes Wide Shut??
@ffionaffiona666 I think Bale's voice isn't as well fit. He sounds a little too gruffy sometimes when he gets quieter which doesn't suit the optimist-under-distress aspect of the character at all, a character trait which goes hand in hand with some of the films more prominent themes.
Good points Indiana. Maybe now that Cruise has more of a tarnished image it might sit better with the dark tones of the movie. And Bale does carry the darker image with him which, you're right, doesnt play with the optimism crushed syndrome.
Another point about Cruise is that the whole Cruise-Kidman thing got in the way of the plot for me - but directors have to go with what they've got and perhaps if it wasn't Cruise-Kidman then he wouldn't have had backing for the movie to be made
@ffionaffiona666 Bale is not even close to Tom's acting, I really enjoy watching him, he makes great performances, but Cruise is just the ultimate actor.
Cruise may be many things but 'a great actor' I don't think so. He's like Harrison Ford - an 'everyman' actor. Nothing wrong with that but acting? No.

Bale said that he mimicked Tom Cruise expressions to get that psychotic thing going in American Psycho.

Yeah, Cruise does look a bit like Bale, especially in the close-up shots in the cafe. I think he was perfect for the role though.
