Atrocities: Some generals like Custer did try to control crimes against civilians. Custer had several Union troops hung for rape. He generally treated his prisoners well. Even after the war he had federal soldiers punished in Texas for abusing citizens there, though many yankees did call him a Copperhead for doing so. The South did commit crimes too like the mass execution of captured black soldiers and the guerilla tatics used particularly in the West. Was either side squeaky clean?

@skiprydell1 : That is Damon Kirsche and he is actually singing. An excellent singer and dancer who's done some acting including a guess role in one of the Star Trek The Next Generation episodes. Harry McCarthy (the man he is portraying) was said to be thin and have thick black hair so he may have been a good choice. The husband and wife team portrayed actaully did perform for the troops in that area at that time. This scene is highly accurate based on eyewitness accounts of the show.

Lincoln did not even try to ban slavery yet states still began to secede. Lincoln even tried to make peaceful negotiations but the Confederacy refused. Finally, the South attacked Union property on Fort Sumter and the war began. The South was filled with traitors who abandoned the Union.

It's more complicate then that, Lincoln was against the expanision of Slavery but wouldn't ban the practice where it already existed, and the North cared more about preserving the Union. The Emancipation Proclomation was only for rebel controlled territory not the Border States. Many common folk didn't have a say on secession the bills were just passed in committies and they were lied too about the whole States Rights, but blame for starting the war does lay with the South.

@Hello59239 Wait a minute there, Lincoln tried peaceful negotiations with the South. Really.... so the Southern representatives who were sent to talk with him after we seceded who were refused and not allowed to meet with him why then were they there? The only thing Lincoln did before the war began was to make one single attempt to keep the Southern States from seceding, and that was the Corwin Amendment, which if it had passed would have made it so congress and the Fed. Gov. couldn't

@Hello59239 interfere with slavery. However it was first off aimed at something that while being a main cause of secession was not the true main cause, that being states rights and the unfair tax balance or should I say unbalance that was placed on the South with was going to be made worse. This failed because the Southern States had, had enough and were leaving. After that point, Lincoln ordered all communication with the South cut off. There are documents of people going to telegram
