  • next to Randy Roads he is the best

  • Man, this takes me back to the first time I saw these guys live in Champaign, Il when he played this solo live running around on that half of a horseshoe thing they had then. I was sold on them from then on. Great Memories. A little aside; my future second wife was also there with her husband. LOL

  • <----- BOWS DOWN TO THE "MASTER" hehe... Neal is THE MAN! Always was...

  • Check out jennifer batten's solo on Michael Jackson's Dirty Diana Live. It's awesome too!

  • FUCKING AWESOME

  • so much soul, so much MELODY!! sure, he can rip it up, but always with heart and soul. Love this mans guitar playing.

  • Lean nuestro reporte en español sobre la tragicomedia de los ‘colados’ de la Casa Blanca, ahora con música de Journey (y muchos ‘punteos’ de Schon…)

  • I love the music beyond imagination, but you can see Neal is thinking how boring this is and how he thinks we are all dullards that think this is super classical...

  • FUCKINGGGGGGGGG AMAZINGGGGGGGG I BOW DOWN TO YOU NEAL my ROCK GUITAR GOD!!!!

  • The "dislikes" must be Neal's ex-girlfriends. Awesome! Thank you for uploading!

  • for a crowd to sing along with the solo must be the greatest recognition any guitarist could have,,ive never seen that before..journey forever..

  • Just amazing. Neal is a guitar god.

  • one of my favorite solo's. a perfect example that a million notes are not necessary to create something amazingly beautiful.

  • I definitely agree!

  • THE most under-rated guitar player on the planet!!!!!! I continue to see Journey in concert simply because of Neal Schon!!

  • Ich freu mich auf den 22.6. Augsburg: Journey + Kansas + Foreigner +++

  • One of the great guitarists...

  • Best guitarist ever. In my opinion.

  • Third favorite guitarist/soloist behind Stevie Ray Vaughn and David Gilmore.

Tight fuckin' company if you ask me...

  • No, that was Steve Augeri... who was between the vocalist in between Perry, And Pineda... Augeri was good, but his Throat couldn't take the pounding of the journey songs!!! He got ill during a tour.. and left the band..

  • Was that Steve? Is he back with the band?

  • @ghero1123 dude steve perrys voice is GONE. He would use steroids to keep him going on the lonnnng tours. and now he has no voice. Its a shame but its just the way it goes. And steve aujeri shredded his voice because they toured so much which is a shame too because arnel dosnt cut it.

  • @bitzboy123 oh thanks man

  • Learn to play this solo @ my channel

  • You are right bro, Neil is really talking to God on this one!!

  • Neal is one of the most tasteful guitarists of all time. His solos are songs unto themselves and i doubt jorneys songs would be as memorable had another guitarist been in the band. Youve got great songs with hooks and neal still adds hooks with his guitar lines. A true master!

  • @td7474

And Don't forget Steve Perry! :D

He brought the band to their pinnacle;)

  • dude is beyond amazing~

  • It's just a masterpiece and never gets old!! Though this time he left out the beautiful variation that you can check out on the DVD.

  • @jetset900 ..thats why they call it rock n roll.

  • @DullardGuy ...that's why I call it G-E-N-I-U-S & one of my all time favorites!

    Cheers!

  • I wake up, I hear this, and then I'm go to go...

  • gosh this solo puts you in such a mystical type of distant trance, so underrated in the rock and roll lure...don't mean to comment twice but yeah...

  • one of my facvorite and little known guitar players, this particular solo has always been one of the greats

  • Journey Rules, master and goodes of AOR...

  • Dont know where it was taken but that is NOT Arnel it is Steve Augeri , was it not Manchester the time before?? Still red hot guitar work from the master..

  • How cool would it be to be in the band and here this live every night?

  • Bowing before my Guitar god... Neal "DA Man" Schon... GO BABY! Your ROCK! he gets better and better with age, PLAYING and he looks GREAT! THE MASTER...

  • he's better than EVH imho ...

  • he's better than EVH .. IMHO.

  • he's better than EVH .. IMHO.

  • ive been playing guitar for morethan 10 years, and n. shcons solo are 1 of the hardest he just makes it look easy, so if you see him really moving those fingers... its one hell of a feat..

  • @crewcutter2030 he is TRULY AMAZING isn't he? I worship his playin and I'm a gal lol...

  • speechless speechless speechless. That is the best response to that iconic piece of the most passionate guitar solo i have ever heard.......

  • I could listen to his playing all day- so passionate and gorgeous-he's connected to "the source"

  • i love his tone!

  • fucking guys, i Stve hadnt been such a hard ass this solo we love so much and emulate so much NEVER would have made it on the radio...they wanted to cut the end or radio play and SP said do what you want, put a fake time on the label, but don't fuck with that beautiul piece of music Neil wrote...THAT'S the man many think can just be replaced. SOUNDING a LITTLE like him and BEING his caliber are TWO DIFFERENT things, Journey fans.

  • Maybe to most "lyrical" guitarist on the planet. Wow!

  • in a word FUCKING AWESOME. ok 2 words lol

  • Idol!!!

  • am bowing down once again to MY guitar god, Neal "the MAN" Schon... there are MANY greats, but in my opinion, Neal you ARE the Greatest rock guitarist EVER, and my #1 band forever JOURNEY... you ROCK!!!!

  • I still remember seeing Journey do this song when they were on tour back way back when. They had the half horseshoe runway behind them and Neal would be running around it playing this solo. Memories

  • Feel that!

  • wow!

  • Sick solo, not a wasted note anywhere. he makes that les paul talk, amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • he's just a pure rock'n rolla

  • Neal is the True Guitar Hero! Look no color buttons!

  • was here that night with the mrs, was an amazing show cant wait to watch the lads again soon ;-)

  • The best part was towards the end where everyone was like OHHHH UH OHHHHH UH OHHH uh ohhh

  • i wish i was that guitar!...(((wheeeew)))

  • thanks for making this one of the most popular Neal Schon video's. Neal rules !

  • @rdekker YES HE DOES! THE MASTER TRULY!

  • They dont make em like this anymore.neal schon is amazing in every respect......check out the Hearing aid Video .Neal plays with some of the Biggest shredders of the 80's and not only holds his own...........He smokes em all........

  • One of the most talented, yet under rated guitarist of alltime!

    NEAL SCHON ROCKS!!!!!

  • The record producers wanted this solo cut from the released version because "nobody cares about a guitar solo". Steve Perry stood up to them and insisted the part had to stay. It's one of the most recognizable solos out there. Outstanding work.

  • It seems only Journey fans know just how damn good Neil Schon is.

  • could not agree more!

  • @schinkelhomie

    Me too...

  • Santana fans also know that Neal is a true guitar God!

  • @elvinee1 he's a monster ... master !

  • Neil said he came up with this simplistic solo to prove to producer and rest of band that it wouldn't work so he could play a more complicated version. But when he heard the playback he agreed that it worked better. LOL

  • I would have liked to hear the original "complicated version"

  • best solo of "who`s crying now" ever!!!!! Neal just lets it flow, wow, amazing feeling in this solo. he is the best rock guitarist ever and totally underrated.

  • This solo is so beautiful, the notes flowed so efforlessly as if his fingers were on autopilot. He should do a new version of this and make it much longer like a full length instrumental similar to Satriani's "always with me always with you". This could be as long as ten minutes and it would not bore you.

  • could not agree more with you, let him play it for 10 minutes and you would be totally never bored. hope he will put out a solo record soon again.

  • why isn't there a guitar hero: journey?

  • @poshjarker cuz journey is too good for guitar hero :)

  • @poshjarker because it would be impossible.

  • @poshjarker because it would be impossible.

  • @poshjarker

    lol

  • @poshjarker i know this is a year later but i totally agree with you.

  • no question jazzman , this is one of the best solos of all time,

  • 1:20 - 2:07

  • Neal is talking with God playing this solo

  • To shut off you need to use the right hand like the others mentioned, mainly because you are cutting off from a note bend position, so simply taking the pressure from the fretting finger wouldn't work like it does for the rest of the descending notes because the bend would unping from underneath your finger. Just incase, you should be using your 3rd (ring) finger to bend, the little finger for the G pedal note (15th fret of the top E) then middle and index finger for the remaining B and C.

  • and his guitar has the special sustain switches. its just sexy.

  • i LOVE his guitar, i want one, but dont wanna spend so much on it lol, thats my dream guitar, les paul with a whammy bar, but the access doesnt have the right sound, this ones perfect

  • one of the great solos of all time ......... come back steve and reconquer the world

  • he cant...

  • Here's the REAL guitar hero!

  • What a solo!!!!!!! awesome..... no comment

  • Can somebody tell me how you dampen the first (bent) note so you don't hear it unbend? I know he's doing something because his second note is staccato but I sound like noisy crap when I try to play this.

  • rest your strumming hand near the bridge so you can silence notes when required, or simply stop the note when its ringing with your fingering hand

  • @grexample

you can either dampen the string with your pinky or palm next to the pinky of your picking hand

  • Jag är från Sverige så jag skriver på svenska....Finns ingen som är bättre än honom.....Superbra!!!Big LOVE...

  • Fukn A!

  • His tone is a thing of legend I swear.

  • This man is a god. he has it all, the nice gibson guitars, the freakin undisputable skills to play his nice guitars, and we can't let his hair go out of our admiration. he's just the best, and journey is my number one favorite band. AWSOME!!!

  • I love how you can trust him not to tamper with the solo. It's OUR solo. We all love it and we don't want it screwed with. He loves it too. So simple, as guitarists know well, but musically perfect for this song. Simply perfect! True inspiration. A composition in its own right.

  • here here !!,well said m8 !!

  • So well said grexample! Just the fact that everyone starts to actually sing along to his solo in this video is a testiment to his amazingly melodic solos. I have never seen this happen with any other guitar player. His solos are like a song in themselves.

  • QUE CABRON REQUINTEA!!!!!

  • Love it!!

  • OMG!!! Awesome guita player!!!! I loooooove him!!!

  • Simply AMAZING!!! The man is a living legend!!!

  • this is why i love neal not only he is an amazing guitarist but hes an incredible musician he knows how to put a solo together and this guy can shred but he knows when to shred and not shred

  • guitar hero journey would probably turn out just as good as guitar hero van halen, if they picked the right songs and did it right

  • u know they won't... lol

  • lol yea

  • Comment removed

  • Yessssssssssss; God Guitar of AOR.

  • Tasteful melodic phrasing, all through the solo. Consummate musician...he is in a stratospheric group of guitarists.

  • i love his whammy bar phrasing. definetely distinguishes his sound from any other killer guitarist i kno out there

  • wow i want his guitar/amp lol, a les paul with a whammy, you dont see that often

  • i think thats his gibson signature model. has a wammy, sustainer, coil tap thingy switch and neck heel that allows easy fret acces

  • any idea on how much that would cost?

  • it was a limited edition a while back. they only made 80 or so i think and they were a fortune. Neal actually mentioned to the guys at gibson he was worried about the price but they all sold out almost instantly.

  • $11,000

  • wow, how much would it cost to get a les paul and install a whammy bar, or just to get one with a whammy bar (if they make those)? (not like the best les paul ever, but a good sounding one)

  • This gives me the goosebumps. Its one the best emotional solos I've ever heard. He hangs onto the notes for dear life.

  • Neal is REAL guitar hero!

  • Neal Schon IS rock 'n' roll.

  • Just so great solo!!!

  • damn! is that a Marshall, Diezel and a Soldano?

  • excellent tone

  • this IS one of the BEST ALL TIME guitar riffs I have EVER heard from my man Neal, "OF COURSE"! SO DAMN SEXY! what a sheer talent he is... and SO HOT to look at, he looks better now than he ever did and he was Always HOT!

  • That guitar screams!

    soo good.

  • Steve Augeri is so cool on the cheerleading. Great frontman.

  • GO Neal! In my opinion that song brings out the best of his guitar abilities! I also wish that the song had more of that riff at the end! I take my hat off and bow to you Neal!

  • Neal could play a "toy" guitar, lol and I WOULD "listen"... he's AWESOME! never get tired of hearing him play, from the Santana days to my #1 all time FAV band Journey, to his solo stuff, whatever he does he has the "Midas touch"... he ROCKS!

  • yeah FOTHSoundguy1, well Neal CERTAINLY has "earned it" lol... the guitar gods "pray" to Him... at least in MY book, or THEY SHOULD! He's my FAV all time guitar man... is AWESOME, and NO denying THAT!!!! (LONGTIME Journey/Neal fan)

  • That axe is a Gison that is his new Signature Guitar

  • Neal is the MAN. Too bad the Gibson he's playin is $11,000.00 Only the very rich can afford an axe like that

  • if you want a guitar almost the same as that get the esp ec-1000 with the floyd, its a great guitar

  • ALL I can say is "Neal, YOU ARE the Man"! GO baby! SO SEXY, you and your guitar playing... you and Journey/Arnel sound BETTER THAN EVER! miss SP but love Arnel!!!!

  • I really love his warm,sustainy sound!!

  • Insane just truely insane. Schon is one of the best ever. Let the Legend live on through!

  • The compositional quality and emotion in this solo is just incredible. I learned most of this solo and I love playing it in music stores among all the thrash metal robots.

  • Hey! ME TOO, mikesteelheart! :)

  • amen to that!

  • man can this guy make a guitar sing

  • This is a KILLER guitar solo. Great, great job.

  • THNX 4posting this! Awesome!

  • I love how he made his guitar TRUELY cry for this solo. One the bes all time as hermione said.

  • Awesome player

  • Hottest Solo EVER!

  • So true.

  • neals my cousin for real

  • Love this!

  • Great footage.

  • I love how Steve Perry looks like Kenny G's little brother in this clip!

This is my favorite Journey song, truly because of this solo.

A Floyd Rose on Les Paul though? Neal is just on that level where he can get away with it, but for the rest of us mere mortals let's not do that!

  • nv88: "I love how Steve Perry looks like Kenny G's little brother in this clip!"

Maybe it's because the dude is Steve Augeri, not SP?

The Perry loons would be coming out of the woodwork swooning if SP ever croons with Journey again (not gonna happen but they keep wishing and hoping). lol

  • oh i didn't get a good look at him in this clip you're right!

yeah you're dead on about that! i'm pinoy but even i can say arnel has nothing on steve perry! sorry but you can't beat the original!

  • I'm not a guitar guru as some of you sound. So I'm hoping someone would be kind enough to explain to me what a Floyd Rose is. Please. Thankyou

  • The Floyd Rose system consists of:

A lock at the nut of the guitar, which prevents the tuning heads from being used and holds the strings taut and floating bridge, where the other ends of the strings are also vise-locked, hence, double-locking. The locking system helps to keep the strings in tune while the strings are slackened to a degree which was not achieved with older tremolo systems, such as those found on Fender Strats, allowing dive bombs, a rapid lowering of the pitch of a note.

  • cheers mate !

  • the tone and the recording.... ughhh

  • Are you kiding?? A FLOYD on a Les paul is LONG OVER DUE and the mainstream market is BRAIN DEAD to NOT have THIS KILLER Black Beauty in MASS PRODUCTION at a REASONABLE price to the WORLD! NEAL rules as an innovator and that axe is innovation number one aside from his mind blowing feel and chops! :)

  • i know !! i did wonder if anyone out there had a floyd on a les paul, im sure they'll release his signature model sometime soon :)

  • The cavity where the tailpiece would go to fit the floating bridge kills the tone. I've played one before and the big, fat sound ends up being really tinny.

  • I'm a huge Neal Schon fan, but it is sacreligious to put a Floyd Rose on a Les Paul.

  • haha they brought out a gibson les paul with a floyd its ultra acccess or somthing li8ke that

  • Fantastic!

  • Sick JUST SICK! O' my goodness i want to just touch him, with the love and passion that he gives here. RETURN SERVE!! yeah!

  • Amazing, my hero..................If I can have 5% of this feel in MY playing, Im in heaven

  • Quite possibibly the most underrated guitarist ever. He has the most immaculate sense of melody and feel.

  • greatness never fades
