there are onlt 3 things that will survive a nuclear war 1.cockroaches 2.ted nugents double live gonzo. and 3.judas priests finest hour sad wings of destiny.
@edslides1 dude i've always loved Echoes live in pompeii. been hooked to that song for years. definitely like that song more than this, but halford's voice is still amazing in this track.
i also like saucerful of secrets, careful with that axe eugene, and other stuff from live in pompeii. wish you were here, dark side, the wall, animals, ummagumma, etc are great stuff too. i even like syd's work with them in the beginning.
People get too up in arms about the shroom lyrics. Because they're not; JP was never a stoner band. The lyrics are about the band, and their close-to-disbandment in the 70's. They followed their dreams (dreamer), got lost in the clouds (fame), but didn't really know if they were happy (nihilism from success) and Halford asks if they can find a way out, one can surely try, but there might not be hope. Luckily they did find their way out, and have been preaching the metal for 30+ years. :)
@TheHalfordFreak i think i remember reading or watching an interview with halford and he simply stated "he doesn't exactly know what the song is about." to him it was pretty much run of the mill lyrics around the time it was made and there was nothing significant about them. i do think this was around the time they were experimenting with psychedelics however. who knows really.
@DoYouWorry the thing with music and any form of creative writing is that the listener will have different interpretations of the song. that's the beauty and sometimes the sophistication of good song writing. a good song is meant to be somewhat vague and ambiguous. look at roger water's lyrics in pink floyd. so many of their lyrics can have dual meaning or different takes on them. it's like analyzing a rorschach painting: what do you see/hear?
What can I say about this song that hasn't already been said. I still have the LP, it was songs like this that made the 70's the greatest era of Rock ever. My all time favorite. Thank you Judas Priest.
such profound lyrics! ARE we really happy? DO we really know? should we follow the purple hazy clouds? out in the cosmos, is there really a single sonic sound? that is vibrating constantly? that if we were to hold on to the note, we would realize our minds were free?
this whole album is amazing to listen to when high. man i love listening to judas priest stoned. my first high was listening to them years ago and the music sounded new. lol good times.
Reminds me of Remember Tomorrow on Iron Maiden's debut. Though of course that came several years later. Listen to Rob at approx 2:43. Paul Di'anno does that same voice in the aforementioned song.
@jfkdjfd I think Deep Purple had more influence, and made Heavy Metal a lot of what it is today. So many people consider them hard rock, listen to their classical influences, their screaming, and operatic singing, and tell me it doesn't sound exactly what would come of metal not much longer afterwards.
@DavidKinner Depp Purple is heavy, a lot of feel in their songs. I will always think of them as a "heavy" blues band really. What i get from them is blues, not "metal" Bluse can be heavy as can Classical music be. Take Gustav Holst's "Mars, Bringer of war" for example. That song is heavy.
@jfkdjfd I get what you mean, but Deep Purple was much more classically influenced than blues. Black Sabbath seemed more bluesy than Deep Purple. Regardless Gillan's vocal style was definitely the most dominant influence on the metal genre.
@DavidKinner glad to see someone respects such great vocals, between gillan and halford, though halford can reach higher notes, gillan is just to awesome in my opinion
@Bluehighlander Agreed. I feel the exact same way about this song, and this solo...Despite the fact that I love every Tipton solo, I think this piece is one of the best he's ever done. This solo just screams "emotion", and it fits the song perfectly....
priest is priest... nothing can compare..they are the single sonic sound, caught in the cosmos, that is vibrating constantly... when i hear this, i get chills, my hair stands on end, i cry... it's like all the perfection in the universe just crystalizes in Rob Halfords voice... Rob, ian, glenn and kk neeting and making this band, was a huge event in human history, a touch of ? the beyond? the infinite and eternal.. they are THe masters..
Most beautiful lyrics ever created. I always believed that Priest is the most creative band in lyrics. This song it's a masterpiece. It's a shame that isn't very famous but that makes it more special.
i remember Joe Anthony of 99.5 KISS announcing this new band from Birmingham,England 1976, first to last song on the Sad Wings of Destiny, loved it back then still love it, Instant Classic, thanks Joe...
@cyberwaffles As with music (being an art) it's always up for interpretation. There's a couple of theories I've heard.... (either Drugs or Aliens) However, during the Priest "trial" back in the late 80's, while Rob was being questioned about their song lyrics, he did seem to mention something about this song being about some kind of alien encounter...So, who knows, really???? But, the whole "alien" topic did influence some of their lyrics, however....
@laney50w yeah i actually heard about that with the interview with halford. he pretty much cast the song to the side like it wasn't anything short of brilliant. those are deep lyrics and this was also around the same time they began experimentation with psychedelic drugs, notably acid. whatever the case maybe, its one of my all time favorites.
I actually went to a christian meeting and done a bit of a talk and got stuck,so i said, caught in the cosmos is a single sonic sound, that is vibrating constantly, and if we could grip and hold onto the note,we would see our minds were free, yes i did,you should,ve seen the looks, they mustve thought, words of extreme beauty, truth and harmony.the words of rob halford,i don,t give a shit if he,s gay, this is the ultimate rock track ever, led zep, black sabbath, thin lizzy, aerosmith, you name them, noone ha
my, my, Rob! Starts out nice and low and then reaches the freaking heavens! What a vocal range! This song as a whole is perfect as whole really - I mean, christ, that guitar solo is a beautiful classic and the bass and drums and main riff are powerful and driving to boot. Enough said!
Just imagine being there (in the recording studio) during the recording of this song...I can just imagine the looks on everyone's faces in the control room when Rob reaches the 2:58 mark. Rob just unleashes the ultimate fucking vocal fury! Jaws must have hit the fucking floor, skulls must have exploded.....Angels wept
@laney50w I have a live video, of JP doing this tune. Sweetest thing I own. Live and during the creation of the album.Rob was much better live actually. Wanna see it?
Bruce vs Rob again -.- They are both gods each one better at some things. I'd say Bruce is better on aggressive stuff where Rob's lyrical style and ballad way of singing is unmatched. Also Rob is known for his high pitched screaming while Bruce is one of the very few if not the only metal singer who almost 100% sings with chest voice only still had incredible range when he was young.
@vazelos87 Well, not really. Halford actually sang on chest voice that's why his "screams" are so powerful and unparalleled, whereas Dickinson always had a powerful, limited upper scale delivery. This is well documented in YT, you can look for these comparison.
Epicness bound in sound... In memory of all friends that I've lost along the road. Let the sad wings of destiny carry your memory to the afterlife. I'll meet you there...
@jevimetal13 ..LOL....and the best part is, Rob smokes! He even said that the cigarettes don't bother his voice much (or at all). Was listening to an interview with him on Sirius Radio (a week or two ago), he was talking to Eddie Trunk about it. Said his vocal range is not affected by them! I couldn't believe it...
anyone knows someone who covered this song exactly like the original? i can't even find Halford's material singing it like original. If someone knows, plz, let me know...
@956crazyman19 no, he didn't, he didn't do the high register well. he avoided it, actually. but I just found it now and he nailed watch?v=8rC4q0yZkdM&feature=related
Judas Pirest by far the best Metal Band of all time. Tipton and Downing on dual guitars. Halfords extremely powerful vocals.............Least metal moment of thier career, Rob Halford coming out....EW, still love you though!
@xDXPxJOEx456x1 Vocal range is the vocals as a whole. Rob had a huge vocal range. Vocal range isn't separated into low and high. There are high notes and low notes low octaves and high octaves they are all included in the entirety of his vocal range.
Bought every fkn Judas Priest album as they came out, this one rates the best of all time for JP, also bought every fkn Ironmaiden album flags memorabilia you name it i fkn bought it!!!!!...aka check the user name I..AM...ADEN=iRONFKN MAIDEN FAN HARD CORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!METAL FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then Master of puppets arrived, wtf !!!!!!!!!Now we're talking , thrash metal at its best softend for the commercial ear non the less...........but still good sh##t

Judas Pirest by far the best Metal Band of all time. Tipton and Downing on dual guitars. Halfords extremely powerful vocals.............Least metal moment of thier career, Rob Halford coming out....EW, still love you though!
thepittsburghkid39 7 months ago
Halford can hit the low and high notes with total mastery. He is the best.

@xDXPxJOEx456x1 The best description I ever heard for Rob's voice is; He can go from Beelzebub to Mae West in mere seconds.
StonersRadio 6 months ago 2
@xDXPxJOEx456x1 Vocal range is the vocals as a whole. Rob had a huge vocal range. Vocal range isn't separated into low and high. There are high notes and low notes low octaves and high octaves they are all included in the entirety of his vocal range.
