@mattgoodnuts You can look it up online. If you have a cloth measure tape you can measure height, waist, forearm, bicep, chest, thigh etc. Then type them in along with weight. Supposedly accurate to around less than 1% , so you can get a pretty good idea. Mine came out 5.5% back when I did it so I figured I was at 6%.
Fighters' body fat percentages can't be too low -- they have to have a decent amount of fat around their waist and their back to prevent spinal damage and herniating organs through heavy, brutal, high stress training. Look at Mohammad Ali; best fucking boxer of all time in a sport where cutting weight is crucial, and clearly, he valued the fat on his body as much as he did the muscle. It's about actual function, not sculpted fat free bodies.
@animeworldchick Bodybuilders go down to 3 percent at competition time. Only other athletes with this low of body fat are professional cyclists. Lance Armstrong fattens up for the Tour de France at about 5 percent going into it and finishes with around 3% body fat.
it really wouldnt be any different at fight time since weight cut is 99% water and the guy said water was in the lean mass area not the body fat count
Lung volume? Bod Pod? Under water weighing? Dam looks like we got a bunch of wikipedia wizards up in this bitch! Shut cho asses! Like y'all know about any of that shit! Watch now sum1 gonna reply saying he a science doctor and shit!
GSP is most certainly below 7.7% body fat because of a few reasons. The bod pod works using the same "physics" as underwater weighing by taking into consideration body volume and weight to generate body density which then could be used to calculate body fat (fat and muscle tissue have different densities). He was wearing a more clothing than the bod pod recommends; ideally you should be naked but practically he should have been in underwear only. Also, we don't know if his lung volume was calc.
If his lung volume was not generated using a special machine that measures lung volume, then that was estimated which could throw off his body fat. Without an accurate lung volume measurement, bod pod accuracy is +/- 3% BF but when it is measured then its less than 1%.
@BJpurity lmao is there anything anyone can even tell you that isn't obvious or been heard before? BJ Penn should just hang it up. He even ate Diego's blood for nothing! just to fail and be a lazy ass again! If he ever gets KO'd in training lol BJ Doesn't even have to get KO'd, he just gives up! Even on fight night ;)
@Spamurai101 No way, if Keanu was ever 5 % he would have been on about a million posters....5% looks like a science fiction superhero with ribs and veins sticking out of every inch of your body...when you move you can see the muscles and fibers moving underneath the skin...only competitve bodybuilder ever look like that and it's only for about a week cause certain systems in their body start shutting down...testosterone for one, it's rough
@KennedyCorey No, doubt.... even most triathletes, people who are notorious for being lean as hell, tend to maintain above 5. If they were to perform lower than that their endurance levels would be significantly compromised. For my hockey and general fitness I try to maintain at about 8... I've been down to 6ish before and I found it hard to keep my training regimen going due to fatigue.
@KennedyCorey Reality is every human NEEDS fat on it. And regardless of the discipline most professional athletes will maintain between 5-14... YES as high as 14... keeping in mind the healthy average for an adult sedentary male tends to be between 10-23 depending on the study.
7.7 is an excellent level to maintain in between fights. Any less is not necessary. I am sure he gets close to 5 percent near fight time anyway.. Not that bf matters that much in mma anyway.
@BJpurity Have you ever trained with him? I have. I train at Jacksons and train with him whenever he is down in Albuqerque and you have no fucking clue what you are talking about
MMA fighters will NOT have as low a body fat percentage as some other athletes do, especially between fight camps. Putting on a bit of fat is actually good for your body when you are recovering from an intense 2 month training camp plus a fight, and have another such one coming up. Fighters that try to stay "always in shape" will eventually hit the wall of overtraining.
@Darwinist That's true, but most low-level fighters and contenders don't have the luxury of fighting twice per year like GSP, especially when fighting is what allows them to feed their families
@mmadigest actually most fighters tend to avoid drinking water and dehydrate themselves, and has nothing to do with losing fat at all. No one can lose 20 lbs of fat in 1 night and put it back on. Sometimes fighters fucked up at doing it and ended up having a poor performance: Jake Shields against Kampman, Mousasi against Lawal, Alves didnt even make weight twice
