To be honest, this is the only decent American remake of an Asian horror movie I've ever seen, but it still doesn't remotely compare to the original. I highly recommend watching A Tale of Two Sisters as well.

They took a korean masterpiece and turned it in to a popcorn movie. The original version is about a girl's story of deep psychological problems she developed from intense guilt which stemmed from the thought of not being able to protect her sister, when she was "supposed" to. They took away that main theme from the original version, apart from changing the nature of characters themselves.

Although I adore Emily Browning and think she did an excellent job acting in this film, I think this film doesn't hold a candle to the original. The remake doesn't capture the same hauntingly beautiful and emotional tone of the original. The original made me cry, this was just building up to be the same suspense film we've seen over and over again. =/
