Arnold was just tall. Of course with height you'd have a naturally large frame. But clearly this was Mentzer's. He was 5 lbs heavier than Arnold and 6" shorter. He was harder too.
@Naturalhit Arnold was only in 75% of his peak shape in 1980. He weighed far less than his all time peak weight of 251.8 in the 1971 Olympia, 245 lbs in 1972 and 1974 Mr. O's 242 lbs at the pre-judging night.
Also, remember most of that weight was Mentzer's overly bloated and fat gut that was carrying most of that extra weight.
"Remember, Zane beat you last year because you have a huge stomach".
Arnold had the best chest and biceps by a country mile. He also had amazing back detail and killer traps that night. Sure not at his best but let's face it if he'd turned up in peak condition the contest would not be worth hosting!
@delpierothelegend Hell there are plenty like him and many better. Arnold had a great chest and great biceps but other then that he is remembered the most as the man who brought bodybuilding into the public arena. That doesn't mean he is the best, just the most well known.
The main reason there is so much controversy about thos Olympia is cause Mentzer and company publicized it sooo much. ALL or almost all Mr Olympias won the contest 'unfairly' from time to time and that includes Lee Haney but in 1980 Arnold was not a long way off as some will have you believe. Franco won the next year - but Franco was not even a movie star at that time so what would Weider have to gain from him winning ?
@AIMANALI The main reason for the controversy is because Arnold was awarded something he didn,t deserve....All or almost all Olympias...from time to time?...thats a little confusing mate...which is it?....I recall one Olympia Lee Haney only just scraping in...but that was touch and go...the 1980 Olympia was a joke...Most people would have had Mentzer,Zane,Coe ahead of Arnold
Arnold did NOT have weak legs...they were very long and appeared to be weak...a man with weak legs wouldn't be able to get a deadlift personal record of 680 lbs and a squat of 470 lbs lol....
He actually has very long legs and considering his legs are his weakest area it is extraordinary that he won so many Olympia's. I guess big chest and big biceps is all they cared about back then. Couldn't get away with that stuff in the 90's. Wouldn't even get close. Having said that his chest was quiet outstanding.
Arnold placed first, booed by the crowd. CBS (who filmed the footage) had Mike Mentzer as the winner. Arnold looked terrible in this Olympia with no legs. Even worse was the 81 Olympia in which Arnold promoted and had his best buddy, Franco win with no legs and gyno that could house a bra. Crowd booed.
@neilp77 actually the year after Arnold's 80 win, I would say was the most controversial Mr. O with Franco winning with a bad bitch tit and no legs....
@neilp77 "arnold looked terrible" Bro take a look at his arms at 0.21...not just his biceps were HUGE but his triceps showing so much from that position and his shoulders too were huge.
@TheHoffmanHouse Yes, terrible. Peaked biceps and good chest--but no legs (with no existant hamstrings) Triceps not matching the biceps, barbie-doll forearms, delts that lost their cantelope size shape. He was a mess here, as forty percent of the crowd booed him at the decision. Look at the rest of the video footage (The Olympia 80--The Lost Footage) and the magazines taken at the time of event, and see for yourself.
Is that Frank Zane on the right @ 0:01 ?
if so he's what... 200lbs and looks the biggest on stage.

@SmartAceHole82
On the far right @ 0:01 is Dennis Tinerino. Left to right it's Arnold, Mentzer, Zane, and Dennis Tinerino,

@Escondido55 yeah, and Dennis Tinerino was at least 240lb there.

@68bobba1 While his perfect 10 scores were clearly bogus, he was still the best looking one on stage that night, even at 85% of peak condition.

@LordShandor Thats a matter of opinion....Coe,Zane,Dickinson and Mentzer were all in better condition...

@neilp77 Wrong. Arnold was the true winner, the judges decided.

@JakaManchaVerde Judges (his friends decided--that's a known fact). Arnold looked terrible. Thus being the most controversial Olympia in existance.
