Splitting wood with black powder dates back to the pioneer days. In the video they had a container of Green Dot which is smokless powder and is not explosive like black powder.
Ok I couldn't tell from the video but I am guessing that was oak and I know your prepping it to mill, but investing in a chainsaw milling rig would be a lot better investment in the long run if you usually run logs that large. Powder is expensive now not to mention the wasted board feet with those jagged splits
It really does not take much to split a log. This is serious redundant power and the end result is very jagged and mostly worthless. I believe it is fun though.
@DoomHell999 Let's see you say that after a hard days worth of work chainsawin' 3 foot diameter chunks out of a tree.
You desk jockies never fail to amaze me with your ignorance of how much work it takes using physical labor. Sure, a chainsaw makes it much easier than it used to be but you let me know when was the last time you lifted anything heavier than the paper-weight at the end of your desk! Haha!
Awesome coming from another Appalachian American

The only possible use for this would be that his chainsaw is shit and finds that cutting smaller pieces is easier.

@showtek1x It's for quarter sawing on the band mill later. the logs were too big to be split with the mill

pretty cool! how did you set the charge. Looks like you used a saw to insert a slit into the wood with the grain.
thanks for posting this... would have never thought of doing it that way!
